  • it bothers me. Broadway stars used to be broadway stars, and hollywood stars used to be hollywood stars, but now hollywood stars think they can do it all, and broadway is becoming TOO hollywood. There are people with GENUINE talent who deserve to be on broadway.....

  • not to judge anyone! but she just doesn't have the soft voice or soul of Roxy hart! ...not after we saw renne's performance

  • Worst show I have ever seen. She ruined it!

  • is she roxie hart? she actually has a better voice here than in her records. (Y)

  • her face shows no emotion for the most part...lol i like how she calls it a broadway. "lets go to new york and see a broadway" even though were in the west end.

  • hahahahaha theyre gonna recongize her nose lmfao

  • nice nose job you talentless hack

  • give her a break she did good!

  • i love the cambridge theatre, went to see chicago last night for the second time and was blown away.... as usual! P.S ruthie henshall plays roxie much, much better though! xx

  • At the end of the day the real question is this, whether it's on The West End in London or on Broadway in New York, WHO THE FUCK IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD DISH OUT THEIR HARD EARN MONEY IN SEEING THIS MEDIOCRE TALENT PERFORM IN CHICAGO? So regardless if life is fair or not, and we all know it's not, one thing for sure is you don't have to go to see this bullshit. Though I do feel for the non famous but talented performers who deserve the attention but sorry I can't throw money down to see her.

  • "A few offers for some movies and some Broadways"... Really Ashlee? Really?

  • i actually saw this show in december, she was really good

  • i saw the show in december to... i was quite surprised at how good she was!!! great show!

  • when she says, ''some broadways''...lol...does she maybe mean some broadway SHOWS...?!? lmao...oh lord.

  • I saw the tour of this and my Roxie was so great that any other time another person was on stage I wished she was singing. If I paid money to see this on broadway--I'd ask for my money back.

  • are yousaying she's not good? i haven't seen her on braodway, but she sounds pretty good for the part.

  • Saw her on Broadway last night...She was so amazing!!!

  • that annoys me so much that she calls them broadways.

  • her voice is great for chicago. almost made for it.:)

  • "It's such a great Broadway."

    ugh. really?

  • I cringe everytime she says "some Broadways."

  • i love ashlee so much. but she's really not impressing me very much with her performances on Broadway. She does look amazing, though

  • OMG SHE SUCKS. Just look at Charlotte D'amboise's portrayal of Roxie...So much more compelling for sure.

  • I figured it out. There's no sense of abandon in her performance. She points to her nose, and mugs, and all that because that was what she was told to do, but she's so restrained. There's no "grr" or raunch or reckless abandon. She's standing in her little square and she's not moving an inch outside of it. I know this was a few years ago so I hope she's improved.

  • I agree, I've seen better performances from High School students and people from theatre companies. hers is weak.

  • this movie and play was great! i have yet to see ashlee in the show but i wish her much luck in her career i met her once and she was a very sweet girl. seeing her on melrose place was cool too it was nice to see her back out there. in my opinion i loved her since i was 10 i had the biggest crush on her, i loved her reality show, and we lived in the same apartment building. I really do wish her luck with what lies next in her career!

  • She's OK. Not a great stage presence, by any means. I think honestly most people can learn to have a voice, but to take it that extra mile is something that's innate and no amount of training or in her case, CDs sold, can teach. My young cousin played Nancy in her school production and is a natural - no training, nothing. I think someone should have been kind and told her not to sign up for this unless she was sensational, which she's not. Give me Caroline O' Connor any day.

  • They always try to cast flopped stars in this show... I'm guessing because this show has done nothing but aged and aged?

  • for one of my old dance recitals we did las vegas and roxy was one of the songs and ashlee did way better then the girl we had play roxy(:

  • I kind of think her performance stinks! I was a Theatre major and have done this show. Roxy's character is very complex and I don't think that Ashlee pulls it off that well. She butchers the amazing music in the show. She is nasal and flat in most of the song clips they have shown. I honestly think she was just cast so they could use her name to sell the show. If I had paid to see this show on Broadway, I would have been very disapointed.

  • you are dumb. you WERE a theatre major...doing it still? it takes a lot to make it on broadway. i dont think Ashlee Simpson will draw a large crowd for a show, thats not stunt casting. you play roxie, do all the dancing, and try to hit every note especially on your first broadway show...then trash talk people who are starring on broadway

  • I agree with xfile064. She doesn't have presence at all! Watch Ute Lemper or BeBe Neuwirth or Ann Reinking and then tell me that Ashlee Simpson did well just because she tried! Reinking transforms into Roxie. If it were my first Broadway show, you can bet your sweet ass I wouldn't commit to it unless I could nail it. Ashlee might be fine in a HS or touring co. production, but not in the "Broadways," I'm sorry to say. It sounded like she listened to the soundtrack and tried not to deviate.

  • Not bad, she wasn't horrible...

She lacked stage presence but wasn't bad...

  • but why does she refer to shows as "broadways"?

  • Oh my god, that bugged me too! Is that really what she thinks they're called?

  • i love her she´s was awsome!

  • Saw her last night and she is amazing!

  • Not bad. But I actually think I prefer Renee Zellweger in the movie! Lol

  • ......just cuz shes famous they stick her on broadway its so sad theres so much more talent then her tht wudve been so much better :/

  • "They're gonna recognise my teeth, my boobs, my nose.."

Your nose? You mean the one you got with plastic surgery? haha.

She's actually better than I expected. Musical theatre is difficult, and she tackled it well.

  • I think it just sucks that there are some really talented people out there that could, and should, play the role of Roxy Hart, but because they're not some commercially known celebrity they're not given the role. Which brings up another issue, people like Ashlee Simpson only become celebrities b/c of a reality show or some relation to an already known celebrity. Talent just isnt recognized anymore. Who's next, Kim Kardashian as Anita in West Side Story.

  • Much better and talented ,than her sis

  • I guess you've never heard Jessica really sing. When allowed just to let her voice be what it is, she is spectacular. Unfortunately, it's not really a pop-type voice. I wish there were more examples of this on the web. Simpson-Wentz has very little talent and will never get a true singing role on Broadway, or a professional venue (Roxie doesn't have top be a good singer. This role is more about the character). I remember when she had to be taught how to sing in tune. Her Dad created her.

  • **technically this is the west end.... not broadway

  • i love ashlee her voice is great but as far as movement goes she's a little stiff and could put a little more emotion in some of the words but she'll get better it's only opening night, i've seen WAYYYYYY WORSE .she's not bad.

  • Is she singing live?

  • Yes you retard.. all Broadway productions are done LIVE

  • i mean, shes ok, i like her, but when i read on her myspace she was going to be playing roxie hart, ummm, no. Seeing her perform the roxie hart song during this video, well shouldn't they make her more versatile and shouldn't she be dancing alot more? or making it abit more sexy? it might not be her fault maybe its the direction, but really?! i like ashlee but i would have never got her for this part

  • ok, i am a bit suprised, atleast she can sing decently live. she wouldnt of been the best celeb endorcement for the show. but good on her, living out her dream :) i admire that. she isnt that bad.

  • She's pretty as always but I'm surprised the production company chose her to play the lead for this musical. Her vocals are not that strong yet...

  • You haters are stupid.

You probably didn't even listen to the parts where she was singing because of the eperience from 2004 and stuff, and then she wasn't bad!

    She sounded great!!!

  • I dont like Ashlee but I said to myself before watching the video, "ok lets see this, I may be surprised", but I was wrong, I think that for a Broadway musical you need a strong personality, a great voice, and a big stage presence, and I think Ashlee has none of that! Sorry Ashlee fans, get over it!!

  • Cast. People are cast in a role. A sculpture is cast. The die are cast. Nothing is casted.

  • A "Broadway". She is an idiot. At this time, she wasn't even on Broadway, she was in the West End. Unfortunately she's going to Broadway now.. I'm disappointed in you, Theatre Gods.

  • WHAT!!!!!!!!! ashlee simpson like roxie she is a mediocre actrees and singer the most important thing in her life was be a jessicas sister and [pete wents wife What is the next step jonas brothers like jackson 5 or miley cirus nominee to the oscar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • People are so illiterate when they're trash talking somebody. First of all, learn how to spell her name before you spit out words. AshlEE is great for this role, if she was not why would she be casted for it? Honestly your opinion doesn't count as far as you think it would, I'm sure if you asked for your money back they'd tell you SORRY COME AGAIN. So therefore I'm sure you're bad critics and excuses you dish out, she's doing more then you so shut up. xo

  • I think that, too, Attentionstarved.

She is great and damn that girl can sing.

I don't understand why people keep talking bad things about her, this video proves that she has an amazing, original and powerful voice and that she can sing live.

I don't see why people write stupid things about someone they don't even know, there are more important things in life....

  • ashlee's decent but just saying that a lot of actors are cast for box office appeal. christy carlson romano was cast in beauty and the beast as belle and she was awful... she really can't sing but she sold tickets... and i guess that's what it comes down to =/

  • They are reprising her role as Roxie... Ebb must be rolling in his grave.

  • you guys are so mean, get your own life.

    seriously.

  • if I went to go see Chicago and Ashley Simpson was in it I would be so pissed and ask for my money back. This is just awful, really terrible singing and acting.

  • good high school theater at best, and even that's a stretch.

Ashlee Simpson is a talentless hack who thinks being a "celebrity" by riding the coattails of a less talented sister suddenly gives you a license to be an actress.

  • shes not 100 % bad there are many people that sing alot worse than her you have to admit.

  • "It's such an honor being in CHICAGO, it's such a great Broadway, and I feel.."

What the hell is a Broadway?? LOL

She is bad...you can't tell she is not feeling any of the words she is singing...not conveying any kind of emotion, and technically, she has virtually no range...

  • A Broadway can be refer to a show on Broadway.

  • not bad :)

  • She got rave reviews by the hardest of critics so I'm sure she did fine:)

  • You can't totally suck as a singer and get a part in a major West End musical. She's better at the role than Melanie Griffiths, who REALLY couldn't sing AT ALL. She's not as great as Renee Zellweger, but she's ok.

  • If she can play Roxie Hart, I know I can 100%, honestly.

  • she's not all that bad. is she the best? NO. her actings shaky, and her vocals are weak in places(murders not an art is an example), but shes not disgustingly bad. everyones just expecting her to be awful because she's a pop star.

  • I see her in this a few years back on the west end and i have to give it to her she played an Amazing Roxy Hart! xx

  • I actually think she sings really well.

  • I don't see n e thing bad about her performance. But I never have seen on actual theatre with so idk maybe its dif there.

I am NOT a fan of ashlee but she is better and smarter than her sister. somewhat.

  • If you went to see this play and you didn't know who Ashlee Simpson was you wouldn't be sat here calling the poor girl a terrible singer. She's not that bad!

  • Don't hate her, but she doesn't have good enough vocals for this.

  • Something I don't get...

Ashlee Simpson was a trained Ballerina, she had something ridiculous like 15 years of dancing, even went to school for it...

Then why the fuck is she so unexceptional?

    She could have done better....

  • i wonder if dad pushed her into the "pop" world because she really should have stayed in ballet.

this is not a good performance. london's west end, what were you thinking?

  • I'm not going to say Ashlee isn't talented, but I am going to say she's absolutely HORRIBLE for the role of Roxie...

She was exactly the opposite of what Roxie Harts character is...Borning, bland, monotonous, and stiff...

    Roxie is a little firecracker...

This was just NOT Ashlee's role. She's better suited for other things....

And Jeus people, you CAN NOT lip sing a live musical, not done, EVER. That's why there are understudies...Which they probably should have used all along...

  • note: this was on the west end, not broadway. and i saw this production at this theater, but im glad i saw a no-name and not ashlee simpson, i bet she lip syncs.

  • You can't lip-sync in theatre.

  • for London, the west end is broadway and many shows debut there before coming to NY like les mis but i am glad you said it. people may have been wondering even more why she was in this role. i don't get it. she has been booed for singing poorly and has been caught lip synching and yet she gets a major role in the west end? baffling...perhaps it's her dancing. but London has so many talented taleneted musical theatre actors to choose from. they knew her name would sell tickets for curiosity

    ashlee rock's

    peace and love

  • its not so much the strength of her voice or lack thereof that bothers me, its just the absolute lack of unique quality... her sound devastatingly bland and blunt..a pitifully ordinary performance to say the most

  • BARF. they really couldn't find some one else? really?

  • its okay, not superb. but dang, i wish I got to see it in person. too bad musicals dont come on DVDS unless its been remade into a movie. -_-''

  • they only let her do it cause shes 'famous'

  • she wasn't TOO horrible. she doesn't have the worlds strongest voice, but neither did renea zelwiger

  • renee did a film

ashlee was doing 8 shows a week

    very different

  • ur right. Renee was working much longer than 2 hours a day until she got it perfect while Ashlee got to go on stage and do terrible, then collect her pay check.

    very different.

I'm not bashing actors on Broadway, i think they're the most amazing people in the world, but she has no business being on stage. :P

  • I agree that Ashley was terrible and has no business getting involved in theatre but I think you're underestimating how hard it is on actors who do theatre 8 times a week. They are working a lot more than 2 hours a day. The show is on for 3 hours and they are there 2 hours before getting ready. Plus on matinee days (2 shows in 1 day) they will be there all day. In the rehearsal period they are rehearsing 9 til 9 every single day, 7 days a week for 6 weeks straight - it's more draining than film.

  • I know. I was hoping I wouldn't come across that way. I was trying to point out that it's clear Ashlee wasn't putting forward the effort needed to be in theater, not that theater was easier than film. Like theater, if you don't work hard while filming, the film suffers, and Renee did a great job in the movie while Ashlee just is not cut out for Broadway (or the West End, where this was) I TOTALLY respect "show people" and how incredibly hard they work, just not Ashlee Simpson. (:

  • Also, the main reason I don't like her is that with each new actor playing a role, you're getting a new interpretation of the role while she brings absolutely nothing new or unique to the character.

  • don't blame her fully. if producers and directors in the west end (who are actually very strict and wanting the best) did this. why, who knows? i don't know what they are thinking. if the girls is told she can do this role...she will believe it. shame on them for casting her.

  • i suspect they knew it would sell tickets because people would be curious to see if she could do it.

  • kill her

  • ugh

  • Did she squeal?

It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't good enough for the Roxie character, maybe next time.

  • "it's such a great Broadway".. really? ugh musicals are not just called Broadways!!! they are called musicals! or shows, or musical plays, or if it is actually on broadway a "Broadway Show" such a pet peeve of mine, sorry

"It's such an honor to be on Broadway".. too bad you aren't on Broadway, you are in the West End.... some one is confused...

  • Yeah she isn't very good...her voice is just not strong enough to be on broadway, she isn't big enough either...you know if you are gonna be on stage you have to make everything BIGGER. And compared to some of the other Roxies it is just...bad

  • all ya haters ...man fuk off shes better than yo ass >=]

  • actually, she isn't

  • She's not awful but check out Ruthie Henshall's version and then she is terrible!!! "Celebrities" should stick to posing and leave the musical theatre to the professionals like Ruthie who not just blows her out of the water but out of the stratosphere.

    xXx

  • she sucks

  • I was dreading watching this vid when I saw the title, but I'm pleasantly surprised. She's not as phenomenal as previous Roxies, but she's pretty damn good.

  • Actually they won't recognize her nose.

  • oh fucking no

  • why does she refer to them as "broadways"? not shows

  • It's weird, right? Maybe it's what she grew up calling them or something...haha, it's so strange.

  • it bugs the hell out of me.

  • Cause it is a "Broadway" show idiot!

  • yes i'm aware of that...

    T_T

  • dude she says it once

  • 1:04, 1:22

    Twice! HA HA! lmao

  • It could just be an American thing? Like they usually say "Record" and English people mostly say "Album" ???

  • Americans call it a show, not a Broadway.

  • I call them a show, or a musical, but that depends for other people if it's a play. I think she honestly just calls them that, and is assuming she's on Broadway, though she's in the West End.

  • She nailed the songs better than I expected, and the dances are spot on, but as for the actual character portrayal, it's kind of awful. It's good acting, just doesn't have a heart behind it much. Not very believable.

  • Stunning figure!

  • ii was ready to condemn her like most, but really i gotta admit, not bad for ashley simpson. Not the best but way better than I expected..Good for you ashley.

  • hey, she's pretty good i think :)

  • i loooove chicago :)

  • Seriously, this is why the world sucks so much. It's why there are so much segregation because people stick to their groups and don't give others a chance to even try. Ashlee Simpson may not be the best singer, the best dancer, but being in Theatre, having seen it she's not bad. There have been those who have been worst and better. Stop hating her because her last name is Simpson. And those bringing up fake nose, lipsynching... shut up. the nose comment shouldn't be here period, and this is live

  • Why god? Whhhhhyyyyyyy??? *sobs*

Every single legitimate Broadway star is crying over this. I've never seen Bob Fosse's choreography murdered in such a way...

  • She SUCKS BABOON'S ASS

  • wow she's good

  • what a fake bitch,fake nose,fake broadway want-a-be!!!!!!!

  • I'm sure the acting is horrendous, but the vocal quality isn't TOO bad.

  • OMG...*shudders* those poor poor people

  • What an insult to the greats that have done this prior to her!!! Fosse is turning over in his grave!!

  • wtf? is this for real?

  • Wait what?

  • Wow. This is actually excellent. Not a wrong note in the entire song. And the acting was spot on. And she modelled her accent off Renee Zelwegger's oscar-winning performance, so it can't have been that bad :P I'm convinced she can now sing. Just not pop music ;)

  • Renee Zelwegger, thankfully, did not win the Oscar for playing Roxie. The production did yield a Best Picture statue as well as a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the fantastic Catherine Zeta Jones.

  • Ohhh yeah. My bad. I knew she won ONE oscar. Couldn't remember which :) And yes, Catherine deserved so much more....

  • for example...Haylee Duff the less attractive less popular less talented Duff sister who won the broadway role of Amber in Hairspray! WHATEVER!

  • I HATE when famous people are given Broadway roles just because they are famous NOT because they are talented! Broadway performers are talented and far superior to most any recording artist because they do it live with out mixers making em' sound good!!

  • I feel so bad for the UK theater audience that they were subjected to this horror.

  • haha.."It's such a good Broadway."

  • she is soooooooooo skinny :| look at the end to her shoulders D:

but i'm not dissapointed. i thought she should be very bad, but she did well :)

  • everyone knows her a hlee the rock pop girl o this looks strange.

  • she slaughtered the dancing. she wasn't sharp or fluid enough at all.

  • hey fuck you guys. I think she did great. Quit hating! And she does NOT sound like a hick. you guys are crazy.

  • ok roxie isn't from the south so does her accent bother anyone else?

  • she's not a great roxie but i've certainly seen worse. but yeah, pretty crappy.

and maybe the stupidest person ever born since her sister!

  • i really dislike this. she's simply not a broadway performer. i don't think she embodied roxie, and the singing was definitely not in character voice.

  • EWW!! She sounds like a country hick singing "Roxie". It's terrible.

  • well, if the director didn't like it, she wouldn't be there.

  • The director has serious issues. And I never said the director never liked it... The only reason why she was in it was because of her name. I remember hearing on the news that when Ashlee was Roxie and Usher was Billy Flynn, I believe, people would refuse tickets given to them for free...

  • Good stuff.

  • at least she's not velma. That would be crappy...

  • "Its such an honour to be in chicago. Its such a great broadway"

She's stupid, and I really don't think she has any talent.

  • Why watch a video with her in it then?

  • shes beautiful =]

    brii

  • she's kinda stiff and her face pretty much has the same expression. o-o

  • For someone who is not trained and as an actor I know how the stage can be intimidating. I think she did well and she didn't push her voice to be what it's not and it actually suits that role, although it could have been fuller at times but it was bad at all for a first timer.

  • hahahahahahahaaaaa

the funniest part [besides the fact that anyone paid money to see Ashlee simpson in a musical] is how she repeatedly refers to a musical as a "Broadway"... now first of all, this show is not even ON broadway, it is in England, secondly,a "broadway" is not a noun to be used in place of a "musical"!

  • The show is running ON Broadway and it has been for years, so it's a Broadway show, it's opened in Broadway before it opened in London.

  • yeah no shit, the point is, ASHLEE was not on BROADWAY she was in ENGLAND.

  • Just because a show opened in new York first doesn't make the London version a broadway show. The shows in London are considered West End, and new york (over 500 seats of course) is Broadway. BUT SHE CALLS THEM BROADWAY (for singular) and BROADWAYS (for plural. She's the dumbest person behind Sarah Palin.

  • did it say London?...thats not Broadway, don't worry :-P

  • ouch!! he is tooooo skinny

  • how fucking adorable is she

  • She's actually quite good.

  • cast*

  • Lol u guys make me laff who just slag her off.

I dotn think she's the best but she wouldnt't have got cats if she couldnt sing?!! deeerrrhhh!!!

  • i thought we were trying to keep broadway talented?

    maybe not.

  • such a cardboard actress... I haven't a clue as to why anyone would put their money into this with A.S. as Roxy... the roll could be so much more than anything she could bring to it.

    Bleeeeh!

  • This is so saddening.

  • Eww. I just don't like her. She's bland, boring, and is just plain NOT Roxie Hart. And she sounds so cheesy country.

  • she does look a bit awkward, but I think its not bad, even though its not that great either. its still acceptable

  • They might not recognize her nose...

  • I think she did pretty good singing the song Roxie here (Except for the 'Art' note. UGH. My ears!) but the first one is positively dreadful!

And she dances like a robot. No emotion. Where's the FLAIR?

  • this is embarrassing. vibrato, ashley? ever heard of it?
