this movie and play was great! i have yet to see ashlee in the show but i wish her much luck in her career i met her once and she was a very sweet girl. seeing her on melrose place was cool too it was nice to see her back out there. in my opinion i loved her since i was 10 i had the biggest crush on her, i loved her reality show, and we lived in the same apartment building. She butchers the amazing music in the show. She is nasal and flat in most of the song clips they have shown. I honestly think she was just cast so they could use her name to sell the show. If I had paid to see this show on Broadway, I would have been very disapointed.

Ashlee might be fine in a HS or touring co. production, but not in the "Broadways," I'm sorry to say. It sounded like she listened to the soundtrack and tried not to deviate.

I wish there were more examples of this on the web. Simpson-Wentz has very little talent and will never get a true singing role on Broadway, or a professional venue (Roxie doesn't have top be a good singer. This role is more about the character). I remember when she had to be taught how to sing in tune. Her Dad created her.

I agree that Ashley was terrible and has no business getting involved in theatre but I think you're underestimating how hard it is on actors who do theatre 8 times a week. They are working a lot more than 2 hours a day. The show is on for 3 hours and they are there 2 hours before getting ready. Plus on matinee days (2 shows in 1 day) they will be there all day. In the rehearsal period they are rehearsing 9 til 9 every single day, 7 days a week for 6 weeks straight - it's more draining than film.
I know. I was hoping I wouldn't come across that way. I was trying to point out that it's clear Ashlee wasn't putting forward the effort needed to be in theater, not that theater was easier than film. Like theater, if you don't work hard while filming, the film suffers, and Renee did a great job in the movie while Ashlee just is not cut out for Broadway (or the West End, where this was) I TOTALLY respect "show people" and how incredibly hard they work, just not Ashlee Simpson. Also, the main reason I don't like her is that with each new actor playing a role, you're getting a new interpretation of the role while she brings absolutely nothing new or unique to the character.

She's not awful but check out Ruthie Henshall's version and then she is terrible!!! "Celebrities" should stick to posing and leave the musical theatre to the professionals like Ruthie who not just blows her out of the water but out of the stratosphere.
I was dreading watching this vid when I saw the title, but I'm pleasantly surprised. She's not as phenomenal as previous Roxies, but she's pretty damn good.
I call them a show, or a musical, but that depends for other people if it's a play. I think she honestly just calls them that, and is assuming she's on Broadway, though she's in the West End.
She nailed the songs better than I expected, and the dances are spot on, but as for the actual character portrayal, it's kind of awful. It's good acting, just doesn't have a heart behind it much. Not very believable.

Wow. This is actually excellent. Not a wrong note in the entire song. And the acting was spot on. And she modelled her accent off Renee Zelwegger's oscar-winning performance, so it can't have been that bad :P I'm convinced she can now sing. Just not pop music ;)
Renee Zelwegger, thankfully, did not win the Oscar for playing Roxie. The production did yield a Best Picture statue as well as a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the fantastic Catherine Zeta Jones.
I HATE when famous people are given Broadway roles just because they are famous NOT because they are talented! Broadway performers are talented and far superior to most any recording artist because they do it live with out mixers making em' sound good!!

The director has serious issues. And I never said the director never liked it... The only reason why she was in it was because of her name. I remember hearing on the news that when Ashlee was Roxie and Usher was Billy Flynn, I believe, people would refuse tickets given to them for free...
For someone who is not trained and as an actor I know how the stage can be intimidating. I think she did well and she didn't push her voice to be what it's not and it actually suits that role, although it could have been fuller at times but it was bad at all for a first timer.

Just because a show opened in new York first doesn't make the London version a broadway show. The shows in London are considered West End, and new york (over 500 seats of course) is Broadway. BUT SHE CALLS THEM BROADWAY (for singular) and BROADWAYS (for plural. She's the dumbest person behind Sarah Palin.

She is bad...you can't tell she is not feeling any of the words she is singing...not conveying any kind of emotion, and technically, she has virtually no range...

You can't totally suck as a singer and get a part in a major West End musical. She's better at the role than Melanie Griffiths, who REALLY couldn't sing AT ALL. She's not as great as Renee Zellweger, but she's ok.

she's not all that bad. is she the best? NO. her actings shaky, and her vocals are weak in places(murders not an art is an example), but shes not disgustingly bad. everyones just expecting her to be awful because she's a pop star.

I'm not going to say Ashlee isn't talented, but I am going to say she's absolutely HORRIBLE for the role of Roxie...
She was exactly the opposite of what Roxie Harts character is...Borning, bland, monotonous, and stiff...
Roxie is a little firecracker...
This was just NOT Ashlee's role. She's better suited for other things....
And Jeus people, you CAN NOT lip sing a live musical, not done, EVER. That's why there are understudies...Which they probably should have used all along...

for London, the west end is broadway and many shows debut there before coming to NY like les mis but i am glad you said it. people may have been wondering even more why she was in this role. i don't get it. she has been booed for singing poorly and has been caught lip synching and yet she gets a major role in the west end? baffling...perhaps it's her dancing. but London has so many talented taleneted musical theatre actors to choose from. they knew her name would sell tickets for curiosity

I agree that Ashley was terrible and has no business getting involved in theatre but I think you're underestimating how hard it is on actors who do theatre 8 times a week. They are working a lot more than 2 hours a day. The show is on for 3 hours and they are there 2 hours before getting ready. Plus on matinee days (2 shows in 1 day) they will be there all day. In the rehearsal period they are rehearsing 9 til 9 every single day, 7 days a week for 6 weeks straight - it's more draining than film.

I know. I was hoping I wouldn't come across that way. I was trying to point out that it's clear Ashlee wasn't putting forward the effort needed to be in theater, not that theater was easier than film. Like theater, if you don't work hard while filming, the film suffers, and Renee did a great job in the movie while Ashlee just is not cut out for Broadway (or the West End, where this was) I TOTALLY respect "show people" and how incredibly hard they work, just not Ashlee Simpson. Wow. This is actually excellent. Not a wrong note in the entire song. And the acting was spot on. And she modelled her accent off Renee Zelwegger's oscar-winning performance, so it can't have been that bad :P I'm convinced she can now sing. Just not pop music ;)

Renee Zelwegger, thankfully, did not win the Oscar for playing Roxie. The production did yield a Best Picture statue as well as a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the fantastic Catherine Zeta Jones.

The director has serious issues. And I never said the director never liked it... The only reason why she was in it was because of her name. I remember hearing on the news that when Ashlee was Roxie and Usher was Billy Flynn, I believe, people would refuse tickets given to them for free...

For someone who is not trained and as an actor I know how the stage can be intimidating. I think she did well and she didn't push her voice to be what it's not and it actually suits that role, although it could have been fuller at times but it was bad at all for a first timer.

Just because a show opened in new York first doesn't make the London version a broadway show. The shows in London are considered West End, and new york (over 500 seats of course) is Broadway. BUT SHE CALLS THEM BROADWAY (for singular) and BROADWAYS (for plural. She's the dumbest person behind Sarah Palin.
