r these suppose 2 teach u 2 start from a dead position? i just did some today, my lifts have been stale or going down lately. but the benches at my gym r a bit higher than that. also, r u supposed 2 fully rest on the bench before coming up? also, should u go down as slow as possible til u touch the bench?
In his article at T-Nation on how to box squat Dave Tate says the squatter should, while sitting on the box, quickly relax and then contract the hip flexors to explode up. How does one do that? I looked up these muscles online, but don't know how to explicitly control them.
@restif1975 thanks. what is most confusing is that I just watched the EliteFTS exercise index squatting DVD and the guy teaching box squatting technique actually says it is **impossible** to relax the hip flexors while sitting on the box. Dave Tate instructs you to relax them in the "squatting from head to toe" article, which means I am probably not the only one badly confused by all this advice... :)
yes it is. He is loading the spine in a flexed position, which puts his discs at risk. If he fails and sits right down on the box he will be in even more trouble.
Which means his back is not yet strong enough or mobile enough to handle the weight through that range of motion.

man, i've been working out awhile now but i gotta admit i'm ignorant as to the benefits of this exercise. love squats and do 'em with pretty good form. but i'd like to try these too. can someone please explain to me why box-squat?
box squats target the hams and glutes more than regular squats because you are supposed to sit back. They also help you get out of the hole if you go below parallel.
@anepales most people have terrible posterior chain strength, and the box squat will add plenty of poundage to your regular squat given a few months of decent training
@anepales generally not, depends what your goals are.. im a bodybuilder and i box squat so i think that speaks for itself.. if you're a powerlifter and you don't squat, you're not going to make it big.. from the copious amounts of articles ive read, at westside and elite fts they don't do regular squats except come competition time! this means box squats on dynamic/max effort days year round.. when done correctly it is king for building strong hamstrings, glutes, hips and lower back strength..
@MAVsince1991 that is not entirely true. the part about west side is. as is the part about box squats being awesome. but thats not to say that there havent been plenty of epic squatters who didn't do them, or at least not exclusively like the westside crew. coan and hatfield come to mind immediately as two squat freaks who did plenty of free squatting - im not sure if they used box squats at all. even wendler at efts free squats, though he certainly does his share of box squats.
@simpllyhuge completely aree with you..and i wish he would of have just done the box squat himself because most people learn by watching as apposed to "BACK BACK BACK!!!"
@thebullfrog24 on the other hand, if everybody thought "BACK BACK BACK BACK BACK!!!" while doing box squats, I'm pretty sure we'd say way less horrible form.
Is that a low or high bar position?

@MAVsince1991 another question. do you do them IN ADDITION to regular squats on leg day or is it yet another day to add to my rotation?

haha, you realise "the coach" is one of the top experts on box squatting in the world, right?
camwharram 2 years ago 22
that is good demo, but it also highlights(which the coach should hav pointed out) is that he is tight (and possibly weak too ) in his lower back.

Haha..i would love to see you say that to Dave in person. I don't think the answer would be too polite lol
