  • Did the commentary say this man was a former p.e. teacher? I feel sorry for those kids!

  • Quick quiz: In 1982, when Seb Coe was Olympic Champ at 1500m, Steve Ovett was the world record holder and Steve Cram won the European and Commonwealth Champion, who was the fastest British athlete over 1 mile for that year?

  • He lived and taught at my school in New zealand in 1977 and he was a member of A,R,R,S,E--------this was the association of road running staff enthusiasts.

He was a nice guy I ran with him afew times and he put in a fantastic leg in the school road relay.

  • Remember seeing this at the time, and astonished that Ron Pickering didn't realise the record was on when he read out the last lap time. A masterful run from Moorcroft, must've been kicking himself that he didn't get under 13:00.

  • wow wow 6 seconds under record is haile esque

  • Has anyone got coverage of jack buckners 1986 euro 5000 victory?

  • This is such a wonderful race from Moorcroft, too bad the commentator is an idiot. Still, cheers for the upload!

  • @AnupamDoesUToob I thought Ron Pickering's commentary was excellent...full of passion!!!

  • What made him so wonderfully mad?

  • Fantastic, i was hoping someone would post this. What an incredible achievement, to take nearly 6 seconds off the WR and to do it all alone. Brilliant.

  • At the 1982 BBC Sports Review of the Year Moorcroft was asked when did he realise he was on for the world record he said "about 2 laps before Ron Pickering :-)".

The 2nd placer Ralph King of USA genuinely thought he won the race, he thought that Moorcroft was a pacemaker who had gone off too fast and dropped out!

  • Elbow in the head @ 2:54.

  • This is an astonishing performance from Dave. He said he didn't get tired til about 4 laps to go. He went through 3km in 7.50 and he was cruising. He never before ran inside 13.20 and since Oslo, never again. If he had a pacemaker to 3km he would have run about 12.55.

  • unbelievable! how often do hear that now - "he's lapped one of the Kenyans"?!!

read that he didn't realise how fast he was going, and if he had, probably would have been the first man to break 13 mins!

  • when athletics was massively cool
