I played this game when I was like 6 or something, this intro was the one of the best game intros at that time, I just loved watching it again and again
Haven't heard that theme since this game was hot, but haven't forgotten a single note! Thanks for posting this. What a mind blowingly awesome game this was, all programmed in 32-bit assembler!
That's because this awesome game had two separate, but similar soundtracks. There was your standard fare which worked on all chipsets and cards of the time, and there was the "high quality" audio track that worked only with a Gravis sound card (being played here with DosBox's GUS emulation, because I highly doubt this was captured on a 486 with a GUS card).
I never got this game to run. It would play the intro then crash when the game begin. But i loved the soundtrack so much I just played the intro over and over to listen to it
One of the best DOS games ever. The music still pops up in my head from time to time, like this morning when I was driving to work. Haven't played this game in a couple years and just randomly remembered the music!
This is an awesome game...a couple years ago, I did a radio play on the Zone 66 storyline in spring of 2006. I've thought about making a fan film, but I have yet to have other people help me with any of my other videos... :(
anyone able to get the soundblaster effects... what IRQ DMA HMDA OPL settings etc do you have your dosbox set at?? I'm running 0.72 but still cant get soundblaster sound :/
You need to run zone66 with the command line parameter of "/s" IE when you go to run the program it should read "zone66 /s". That should force the game to start with soundblaster support
Also, make sure CPU cycles are set at around 5000....Believe it or not this actually makes a difference. if set on auto, the sound for some reason does not work. I have no idea why and really can't explain it.
He was the best musician in the demo scene. Sadly nobody really gave him any recognition as Renaisance demo's were average. Basically, cc catch should have been in the future crew instead of purple motion. I reckon being in FC would have got him noticed and he'd have been picked up by a games software house as a musician. It's such a shame.
Oh yes. Twas GREAT game... The music was just the best at this time for me. I played a lot. I've even finished that game on my PC. And I remember that I used to just replay the in-game music to have the pleassure of listening to these songs when I was making my homework. Heh... I've been in my high-school at that time, as I remember. Greetings.
ok i still cant find the full vers, but if you get the shareware and dosbox(BOXER's site is down, gg) load dosbox andd type ems=false and then xms=false , you dont need to change core set. sfx work but i cant get music to play, ymmv
I played this game when I was 10 years old.....now I'm 24. Now, I downloaded a full version and I'm playing it. Nostalgies! Use Dosbox 0.72 and Boxer with full Emulated CPU CORE and no XMS AND EMS Support... and you will be able to play it with full sound
at the time, this intro was the coolest thing i ever saw. i loved this game. I just downloaded it but cannot figure out how to run it on dosbox. and of course it doesnt open with windows vista. any tips?
@sumguy321 The song in this intro made me fall in love with this game back in 1995. I remember just watching it over and over before playing the game.
anyone else think the baby looked like a slug with a tophat the first time they saw this? The game was badass took forever to beat it, DFA Bomber ftw. Also, if anyone else remembers rennaisance's earlier demos the options menu had that floating thing in there.
IIRC, it was coded part in assembly, specifically tailored to the old cpu architecture, which is why it wouldn't run on new machines (dosbox non-withstanding).
This is not the (only) reason why it doesn't run on modern machines. Zone66 used its own memory manager, therefore you had to boot it in _plain_ DOS (which was very unusual even _back then_), i.e. without any high memory managers.
Exactly - look at IO Interactive (the Hitman games - includes many ex-demosceners), EA DICE (formerly members of Amiga group The Silents), and Remedy (largely comprised of the original members of Future Crew).
lol I remember watching this waaay back on my old 386. Wickedest thing I ever seen back then, and the music still rocks! C.C.Catch ftw! :) He also did the music for One Must Fall 2097.
This game is old! i remember playing it years ago! still good to see teh intro! :p

The music was composed by Kenny Chou AKA C.C.Catch (not to be confused with the female singer) AKA ProphecyX.
He's also the one who made One Must Fall:2097's soundtrack.
Sadly, it seems he left the demoscene and tracking infavor of pursuit a career in IT.

Thanks for putting this up, I cant get the audio working on dosbox for some reason :/

You have to run it with the /s switch (at least that's the way it is for me)
gtrnbm 3 years ago
that didnt work either, for some reason i tried the /a switch and the /u (i think) switch...
I think its a problem with dosbox.

Which all in all means this was an awesome piece of code work.
Probably because these guys came from the scene.
The coders today are mostly school tutored slackers with little real understanding of the machines they push bytes on.
Foxstab 3 years ago
Not necessarily. Even today, many notable games are (partly) programmed by sceners.
