  • that ambulance sounds really like crying..

  • Astro boy defeats the kkk @ 52 seconds.

  • the 80s version of this was better ... the story of why Toby/Tobio was in the robot car in the first place makes more sense

  • "I must succeed!"

  • Comment removed

  • Jap version is MUCH better than the dub.

  • THESE ARE NOT THE EXACT WORDS FROM THE EPISODE.

  • Tezuka really has a thing for car crashes in the beginning of some of his series; he did the same thing in the beginning of Marvelous Melmo!

  • @marvelousmelmo Can you blame him, though? I think that even in the future, we will be able to relate to the tragedy of a car crash. That's scary shit!

  • @Bike643 actually in they year " 2000 " cars are connected to the road so they operate automatically so they let kids drive however there was malefuction and via death to little temma

  • I'd forgotten this was in black and white. Would it be blaspheme to suggest they colorise it/

  • the intgro is too long :(

  • ummmm... How old is he when he isliving??? I din't know they let children drive at such a young age. Did like steel the car or somehting? Weird.

  • @Bike643 It just goes where he tells it. I saw the dub.

  • @Bike643 maybe in the future cars drive themselves? though that would make the crash all the weirder... or maybe he was on a joyride XD

  • the father's face was inspired in a chicken with a crest lol

  • So...the robotics genius is expecting a robot to grow. Well, I think he works for the government, so it makes sense.

  • At 0:53 who are those villians with the dark suits, eye masks, and hats from the 1940's? I'm trying to look for that episode! Respond back! And Hurry!

    thank you

  • 9:00 - 9:20 Incredibly sentimental. This scene truly shows the power of animation when done properly. That's artistic!

  • In the 2009 movie y do they make him die in the peacekeeper?? ?)

  • this is so different to all cartoons I've ever seen! I thought the 1983 version was better for the full animation, but the limitations in this bring Osamu Tesuka storytelling style best. It's like watching a short film made a series.

  • So Tobio died in a car accident? Does the one made in 1980 and 2003 died the same death also?

  • @xXSgofyyahXx 80s, yes, 2003, don't know. It doesn't say.

  • can you sent me link down?

  • the birth of the best kind of cartoons of all times. JAPANESSE CARTOONS, anime

  • thank you beethoven :3

  • Wow!! To think that my favorite anime shows (namely Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Soul Eater), they all started out with this one series... Lol... Wow. XD

  • Dr. Tenma Needs to rebuild Astro into an adult.

  • Astro Boy 1 January,1963 Episode 1

  • @Tsang3d213d21 In the US, this episode wouldn't debut until probably September of the same year.

  • astroboys dad looks like a rooster..

  • Remember kids, don't drive down the center line, and don't drive with your eyes closed.

  • @yanniskusogaki geez. Try the decaf. It's a cartoon from 51 years ago. Live in the now.

  • @sspaay Nononono it's a cartoon with a message from 48 years ago...black caffeine-packed for me,thank you.You don't get to call your dog's shit in the neighbor's lawn a brownie because the kids are listening.

  • @yanniskusogaki Your social skilled are right up there with your math skills.

  • @sspaay It first broadcast as an anime in 1963,so they are...and you're enjoying them thoroughly I suppose.I can't say the same about your writting "skilled" though.

  • @jorgedalko What does the title of the video say? You need some work on your context skills.

  • @sspaay The title of the video doesn't know more than me living in Kyoto and going to the manga museum twice a week ...how's that for context skills?I've read most of his works and have an original cell from this hanging in my office. But even for people like you there is Wikipedia, just check it.I'll just sit here and wait with my context skills.

  • IT IS NOT ASTROBOY YOU FAT FUCKING RED WHITE 'N BLUE RATS...it's called Tetsuwan Atom(mighty-as-iron Atom). The boys name was Atom,as in atom bombs...remember those? He was powered by a heart shaped nuclear reactor and he was there to make a point with it.Wanna guess the point?

  • These old animes look like hanna barbera cartoons.

  • booty shorts! woohoo!

  • And to think, their voice actors BACK THEN are STILL better than our English dubs TODAY.

  • @CapnMarcoPolo except that they had an issue of matching up with the lip flaps. If you watch closely whenever the characters are speaking, when the VAs stop speaking, the characters' lips are still moving.

  • 0:51 KKK LOL

  • love the animation style. A bit dark and eire.

  • I've actually come here to try and watch this... I've seen the movie first, and the 2003 series of Astro boy...

But I wanted to be fair and see from which series it "originated".

However, I can't help but feel that the movie was best at really letting us get to know Toby/Tobio before killing him off... this one just seemed kind of random... but hey, it's only the first episode! Plenty of time for backstory! ^_^

  • astroboy has Japanese goverment's Nuke policy.

  • Comment removed

  • this was the episode astroboy was made more popular than tobio =\

  • vary walt Disney like

  • @alownlion

    no

  • Why did he have to play Bethoven?

  • èpic!!!!

  • 8:52

    Ok. THAT was funny!

  • 5:48 genius

  • cool

  • I'm honestly lucky that I stumbled upon Astro Boy when I did

Me and my mother's boyfriend at the time walked into a local Pawnshop for some reason or another and I found four VHS tapes (each with two episodes a piece) from a video rental store tucked away inside a large cardboard box.

Those things friggin' made my day

  • ahahahaha doesent dr.tenma look like one of those old chikens in cartons the male ones with the big red crown lol

  • wow his name is dr. tenma. that reminds me of the anime called monster.

  • I'd hate to burst Dr. Tenma's bubble, but robots don't grow. The closest we got to that were Rapunzel doll's that hair grew and dolls that pee almost imediately after water is given to them.

  • @beatlesgirl95 hahahhaahaha

  • @beatlesgirl95 this is supposed to be a "modernization" of Pinocchio: the story of a wooden puppet that wanted to become a real boy for his father Geppetto. Only instead of dealing with an Italian folklore magic-oriented storyline, this is a Japanese science fiction-oriented storyline

  • @beatlesgirl95 yes, I'm afraid the good Doctor Temma had more then a few screws loose expecting the robot Astro Boy to grow! :)

  • @beatlesgirl95 In the future, though, think of artificial cellular growth. It is possible to make it work, though the initial growth phase would be long.

Also, there is such a thing as Artificial Intelligence, and Technology changes quicker and quicker each year. It's changing even now, as I post this useless comment on YouTube.

  • ...I think watching Astro punch out the KKK at 0:51 was the best two seconds of my life.

  • Dr. Tenma is a creeper. Also, how did they get away with killing off what is basically the main character within the first 3 minutes?

  • Dr. Tenma looks like a chicken with his hair & beard.

  • Dr.Tenma is a fucking nut. Someone has a few screws lose in the old noggin

  • Geeze is his name Tobio or speed? No wonder he was killed :/

  • 0:50 astro boy versus the Klan

    awesome

  • ^^!

  • Why did I have a feeling that Tenma was going to play Beethoven to bring Astro to life?

  • its like he raping someone at 6:19 O_O

  • Dam the Joker is Japanese!

  • Well ofcourse he didnt grow genius, hes a robot!

but on awesome robot at that! I think It would be kinda fun to have your memory downloaded into a machine like that, though I'd admit it would probably have an empty feeling like just living in a shell =/

but atleast its a bulletproof one i think ;) Reason I decided to look this up is because I just saw the movie searching around on netflix and enjoyed it a lot.

  • why was tobio driving in the first place? but still, good anime!

  • wow the show that shaped the look of modern anime *stares in awe*

  • @Ruldolphmaker Well...actually, it was the earliest Disney catroons that shaped anime and what it would become, so...

  • @UTAU53Yui no i mean the anime that started using the disney look

  • T-T

    Tobio!!

    T-T

  • I love how the opening seems so cheery, yet the opening scene is so tragic. Quite the mood whipslash they got there.

  • There goes Megaman's cousin

  • This is great! Thanks for upload!!

  • so fucking gay... i like it:p xd

  • it looks like a walt disney animation

  • @mylatestgrievance91 Well, the guy who made this was a huge Walt Disney fan. He saw Bambi 80 times when it came out in Japan.

  • Astro-boy killed the KKK, nice.

  • Tenma looks like a big CHICKEN!

  • i love the use of beethoven's fifth

  • 2:52 to 3:20 lol from crying to laughing like an madman

  • i like the 1980 series ^^

  • It's disappointing you don't see the character development between astro/tobio and Tenma like in 2000(which i saw first). I guess I'm just prejudiced. 1960's series is much more light hearted, 2000 much more dark. Oh, well. Still very good.

  • Thanks for sharing this! Astro boy is so kawaii.

  • The 2003 series is better

  • soo...in japan kids can drive a car..

    good to know...

  • i know astro boy is a classic, and i loved avery nimated moment of his awesome, but you have to admit, he looks like a pedophiles wet dream.

  • @Extra365 Exactly.

  • @Extra365 Media sheep.

  • @Khultan im saying it like it is, bro.

  • So, he thinks he could defeat the imperious forces of Special K, huh? Well we'll see about that!

  • Awesome . . . !

  • Do they show a human rib-cage in the debris at 2:12?

  • How Awesome.I LOVED this show as a mere babe in arms almost.

  • Lol at 3.40.... He's getting weird...

  • this instro is much less creepy with out the children singing @o:51 Astro just bitch slapped the KKK - WAY TO GO KID!!!

  • awwww truely an instant classic in anime history...Osamu Tezuka is my hero

  • wow, it looks more like a western cartoon

  • Japans answer to popeye the sailor.

I love the animations its so simple and pretty funny to watch, and i love how everything is off sync xD

  • I Wish they made the Astro Boy Movie in Japan

  • 1:57 No wonder he died! He's driving with his eyes closed!

  • How ironic that this is actually a Japanese language dub over an English language edit and dub of the original Japanese version. The original Japanese version was lost, so the studio in Japan restored it using the version NBC produced. Some of the music is the same in all of the versions. I think that Listz's "Les Preludes" used in the 1983 version of "the birth of Astro boy" was better suited that Beethoven's 5th used in the 1963 version though.

  • Sure, it was "Popeye", 'Tommy'- Dr. Tezuka was a BIG fan of Max Fleischer's Popeye cartoons (appearing in Japanese theaters) when he was a kid, and that, along with Walt Disney's cartoons, were a major inspriration in his desire to be an artist and cartoonist...and he, in turn, inspired another generation of "manga" artists as well.

  • 4:51 It's Popeye!

  • WOW! They had a poor idea of what robots looked like back then. Then again, robots and computers were popular in 2000, so... :P

  • where did you get this episodes? I really wants them too! can you pleace tell me?

  • @JuliusAnudasson I bought the boxset off of "amazon.ca". If you can't find it there I'd suggest 'Ebay'. I'm sorry, I don't really know where you could find downloads.

  • @WingedMushroomOfDoom cool what's the website?

  • @WingedMushroomOfDoom What's the name of the boxset ? I really wanna get it somewhen :)

  • @KHPandaZ It's called "Astro Boy: Ultra Collector's Edition". There's a boxset for both seasons, so they'll have "set 1" or "set 2" on them. They really stand out because the art work is black and white with some red.

    :]

  • @JuliusAnudasson oh i know you you get at the DVD store and the box set has the 5 fist full episodes and the box name is right stuff

  • @JuliusAnudasson A few Japanese episodes were on the American boxsets. Only so many Japanese episodes still exist.

  • 9:29

why doesn't he know that robots cant grow?

  • @yelloweyeball He was too broken up to consider that fact beforehand

  • I liked hte part when he ate :D

  • i heard somewhere that osamu tezuka did most of the animation by himself without a team of animators

  • This was the narration heard at the beginning of the English version:

"Who IS Astro Boy? Where did he come from? In the year 2000, there was no 'Astro Boy'. There was a real boy named Astor Boynton. One day, he was racing his aerocar at supersonic speed on he world's safest road, Electronic Highway 66. No need for Astor to steer, speed up or slow down: the highway controlled his car automatically. All Astor had to do was...press a button- the road did the rest..."

  • "Yes, this was the highway of the future- safe as man could make it. No need to worry about a thing!

    ....or WAS there?"

  • Growing up in the 80's I am thankful for the internet for nostalgia such as this. My dad bought me the 80's Astroboy box set for my 28th birthday lol, I don't think I'll ever grow out of it,and my kids certainly love it. Great cartoon with some desperately needed morals that many action(ish) cartoons these days lack.

  • ちっとも大きくならない!って、あんたが作ったんだろっての。科学者だろ?

  • I must succeed!

  • Here's something interesting. Mari Shimizu, the Japanese voice actress for Atom/Astro, not only voiced Astro in the 60's and 80's series, but she also provided the voice for Jetter Mars, a cartoon by Osamu Tezuka that was similar to Astro Boy.

  • So this is the beginnings of anime. A Disney-like drawing style with mature themes that stood apart from the "animation is for children" mindset at the time.

  • i hate how the new on is CGI -_-

  • @ 2:12 ---> i thought the kid was splattered into multiple pieces..

  • I thought I would check out the original Astro Boy series just to see what it was all about. I just watched the Astro Boy CGI movie that came out recently at the cinema. It was more dramatic for Toby's death than what I saw here. The movie really was pretty touching. I will investigate the original series more. Thanks for the upload.

  • At :50 Astro Boy is kicking the KKKs ass.

  • This orignally aired in Japan (over the Fuji network) on January 1, 1963. Nine months later, Fred Ladd's "American" version of this episode was syndicated [through NBC Films] on local stations throughout the United States...

  • every time i see this i must think about this:

    /watch?v= HCEgKAHtpEA

    damn you freakazoid!

thanks for uploading! really good series!

  • Astroboy otro de mis dibujos animados de mi ninez, eran fabulosas sus aventuras... lo maximo

  • nobody could hate on this piece of greatness

  • Do you speak Japanese?

  • @MegaAwesomeFilms Me? Urm, only a few words here and there. I'm taking japanese next year though, so I'll know more then.

  • For some reason Or another, Tenma reminds me of a chicken :O

  • man tenma aws crazy than the 2003 version....

  • Of course, now that I come back to read the comments, and I had YuYu Hakusho running in the background... I though I forgot to pause this.

Oh you, Japan. And you, Togashi, for being a cheesy writer.

  • my dear god its like looney tunes

  • Very similar to Mazinga Z. One death, one vehicle at high speed down the road, a robot that does not know how to walk or handle itself, a crazy scientist, huge mechanical monsters, the girl who loves the hero but he always plays hard to get....and so on

  • why does it always invole a piona when it comes to buttons?????????????? I mean seriously

  • What a sad opening. D:

  • @Vaxliscious I know. Pretty intense for a cartoon.

  • Wow talk about old anime!!!! O:

  • Holy fuck it's the KKK!

  • In 5:23 minute Dr. Tenma looks like rooster!!!! Hahahaha!!!! Good cartoon. Five stars.

  • Why were the characters white people? Didn't they like making cartoons in their own Japanese image?

  • 9:00 to 9:25 Great stuff. Only a genuine artist could come up with that concept!

  • lol i love ow Astro broke the alarm clock and curtain by accident XD

  • arggh, WMOD, do have anything in english? or color?

  • @calopie00 hey man, in that time the tv was in b/w .

  • @haysenor

    true dat.

  • te come la cabeza el pelmoooooo

    a quien sea, da igual

  • O_o the 60-s one of Astro boy is very weird. I'm really not going to watch anymore, I like this, but.....yeah just too weird. I'm just not used to stuff like this. Still rating a 5/5 and a good job on the quality too.

And why was Tobio all of a sudden called Astroboy?

And Tenma really wanted Astro to grow? For a scientist that was dumb....Ah well, that's an anime for ya.

  • Maybe only Dr. Tenma called him Tobio? He felt Atomu was his son, but everybody else just saw a robot. That's probably why he got mad... Tobio's death drove him crazy and he forgot that Atomu wouldn't grow? I haven't watched the other parts of this yet, but it seems anime has been weird from the start.

  • you see? this is why we need english subbs!

any way, tobio is a human kid, who died and astro just lokks like tobio.

  • Who else thinks it's at least a little innapropriate that the crash is symbolised by somone beating a drum kit? Oh well.

  • Pretty much all of the sound effects are made using musical instruments.

  • i think i said somewhere else where i found this in english that some of the sound affects sound like one of those echo mics at dollor tree.

  • does anyone know whether there was a different beginning in the American version from 1963, than the Japanese one in reference to Tobio's car accident?

  • Comment removed

  • @jammer345 actually the one in english does tell you how the accident happend, so its a bit easier to understand.

  • enjoyed this... saw it in full at Free Movie Chest . com
