Man you're charging capacitors and using a device that surges HUGE wattage hooked to a 300 watt inverter? No wonder they are catching fire. You should be using a 2,500watt/5000watt inverter that can handle the instant draw you are pulling from the inverter. Best of wishes.
The reason I went for this size of inverter was due to the fact that Alien Bees/Paul C. Buff sells a package that includes smaller inverters.
The new model's specs are identical to the older model, which performs fine with two of these strobes. I expected to get the new, smaller unit with the same performance.
We have used several 300 watt AIMS inverters and found that the strobe lights have a high surge. We upgraded to the 600 watt and they work much better

So is it Crappy or too small for the job? What is wattage rating on those lights? You can't put an elephant in a wheel barrow!
