To be fair, you can't judge this game harshly because you can die by touching walls and floors and ceilings. Most shoot-em-ups have that feature. Gradius, R-Type, etc. If ships touch a floor or ceiling, it's the same as crashing and exploding. Real fighter jets would do it too if they were flying around inside things.
