Wooden stocks 1969? Are you making some kind of joke?
This was CSN's second live performance after a smaller venue show, so for their second live performance they were in front of slightly less than 150,000 because they played late Sunday night on August 17th, 1969, and many people had already left throughout the day. Still, a huge crowd for a band's second performance! Such a pretty song.
i like the words "If you're smiling at me I will understand coz there is something everybody everywhere does in the same language" it simple but says so much
There is a similar connection (although it may seem like a long stretch of the imagination) between the music of that (mine) generation and the music of the last fifteen years or so. The connection is that the truly inspired musicians try to pass on their inspiration through their music. They do not try to hide who they really are in real (public) life. Not that they ever really could anyway once they became famous, But they used their music to help bring a change to our society not exploit it.
A musical interlude to a song who's lyrics once again represent a way of being, that we can sing about, dream about, wish upon the "earth", but can't seem to actually materialize or create as a way of existing. That's the part I have a complete and under disbelief about with reality (the real one?)
Many of the responses here indicate that many have no idea about what the music is all about. Folks now have been sooo harshed. Listen enjoy, and relax, folks.
@mrbollocks Govt can be the problem but it can also be the solution. We as citizens have to make sure that government is held accountable and that we shape policy via voting. I'd say the overall message that CSNY has always conveyed it to stand up and make yourself heard.
@mrbollocks oh bullshit ya moron, the problem in this country isnt big govt its BIG BUSINESS, try thinking for yourself instead of being brain washed by corporate america
@kaja66 Using the term moron shows a lack of intelligence. Don't you realise a lot of 'big business' as you call it survives on government contracts? A lot of that is waste. True capitalism involves the acceptance of risk.
Sorry to use some long words there, must have been difficult for you.
@mrbollocks big business survives on eliminating competition and taking advantage of consumers. If big business is getting subsidies from govt its because big business owns the people in govt. wake up. your endless carping about big business comes from your reliance on the corporate foxnewsrushlimbaugh propoganda machine that keeps you in the dark.

The message of this song is profound. It was a time of the cold war and the fear of nuclear distruction. For me the haunting part is the staccoto organ in the background....it's almost as if a survivor is using old morse code to see if there are any others alive....or if he is alone.
Hey, listen to STEPPENWOLF LIVE / MONSTER and come face to face with the evil in this country. It"s not because of the evil people here, it"s because of people that don"t do anything about it. These guys did.
Their music expresses ideals that don't change despite a world that resists. They were exceptional and resourceful in this world of want, restriction, regulation and limitation. It was not a party thing but a human/resource/administration problem.
This song is about the aftermath of a nuclear war. Those in the ships are escaping from the devastation. The purple berries reference concerns radiation sickness while the "silver people" are wearing protective suits. The images of desolation on the video are perhaps from the nuclear bomb tests at Bikini. A similar but bleaker theme was pursued in The House at Pooneil Corner. Those of us who were adults in the Sixties were always aware of the threat of nuclear annihilation - Cuban Crisis 1963.
This is not the Woodstock version, and it's not even a complete rendition of the song. All these up votes must be for the real Woodstock version that got taken down. Much better than the album version. They're deleting Woodstock recordings from Youtube but not other live songs by the same singers, which means Woodstock is more of a corporate property than any other live recording. ironic isn't it?
Funny thing...I was born in 1969-To two of the sorriest baby booming pieces of shit on Earth..ALL about money and possesions..They could care less about their kids as long as they don't have to spend any of their money. It's cool, though.I like to think I was born then to MAKE THEIR LIVES HELL because I definately have spent my life going against the establishment :)
You all realize corporations are outsourcing because American kids are too lazy to do anything right? So if they can't manage to get off their ass and put a serious effort into school, what makes you think they can start a revolution? Not only that but after the 70's was the beginning of all this. Less kids were interested in science, engineering and math and it shows today. So try to topple corporations but what do you think happens then, we all open head shops and trip on acid?
@100750 Actually, if you worked in the industries that are outsourcing, you would realize that the reason products and services are being outsourced to China, India, Korea, etc is that more profit is made if the company spends less. Typically, the products are much lower quality, but the buyers typically don't notice this, it's all throwaway in the end. Corporate greed is what it is, no more, no less. The value of the company is based upon the stock value- profit margin drives stock price.
I,m 62 and I was there. It was majic times and we were free ,easy , and young. I went with a bunch of friends from Boston.I thought that place was going to turn into another riot but it didn;t. I walked ahead of them toward the music. Never saw those people again. After Woodstock, got married had kids, got a job but I,ll never forget the 10 days I spent there.AS the saying goes that was then. I saw myself in the movie. I was the naked kid with long hairand the great looking penis
@MrDaBlanch Yes there is a way out, we can lead our kids and grandkids to the way out, do you really think that the government can stop 300,000,000 angry citizens, or even 50,000,000 angry citizens. It's our friggen duty to help them, we sold out, we let them down, now we need to show them what living life can be, and we need to lead them to that promised land. Why are we all a bunch of old cowards now?
I am 58, have a 20 year old daughter in college. Send her all these songs....and ask her what is wrong with her generation??? Apathy. A feeling of helplessness.
i am trying to raise a riot....yes, everyone is a coward now. all i get are a bunch of stupid fucking emails about how wrong things are. No action.
@pavaughn1 Technology has turned into a major problem, kids of today text they don't know face to face, they don't know history, that's our job to teach them. I'd be terrified if I was a kid now, and feel helpless, but we really aren't. While we talk about how bad things are, people in France, greece, Italy, they're out in the streets saying to their respective governments, "no way" and their governments have been forced to back track, we can do this here!
@isftpoawawh I'm one of the kids of toay, but I'm basically against that stuff, you can call me a "hippie" even. I agree with The way John Lennon did things too.. Except for the drugs.
@maxwellsgianthammer Well that's good, except when John Lennon did his thing, the people still held the power in the USA, now that power is held by corporations, and love and flowers will not cut it with the people who run these corporations, the young, like you need to take back the streets, to realize it is your lives that will suck big time if things don't change, a broiling hot world, where the average person will be in all but name a slave of corporations!
if they ever make a movie about crosby stills nash----------id say danny devitos a shoe in for crosby, crowe maybe stills, undecided bout graham nash.
Who do we have now to sing the songs that are powerful enough to snap people out of their placid acceptance of a government given over to corporate greed? Come back all you musicians of my youth, we need you more than ever. I promise not to ignore the message this time.
@Cantrememberjack Often times has the man been considered Republican, however that is only for the righteous fear of a people's much unneeded uprising. One should realize the one to fear would most likely be a Democrat, one for strong a strong centralized government, supporter of big business, and one who does not respect the early American ideals of Laissez Faire. For it is indeed so the Republican man who fights for small business owners, often misconstrued as result of an anti-drug approach.
@AppreciatorOfTheArts It's funny that you say that democrats are in favor of a strong centralized government because at some point I'd say when are economy shifted from producing to consuming ie richard nixon is a faggot and stfu. The shoe is on the other foot hahahahahahah ...
@Cantrememberjack Concentrate on the prepubescent kids today. They are still malleable enough to be open minded about producing positive change. My generation (born '71) and the adolescents and younger adults today are a lost cause.
@ebonics4everyone haha man that hurts a little bit but i'm gonna slightly disagree. i'm from the chicagoland area, born in '90. there are plenty of little shitheads from my generation, younger and older than myself, who are extremely confused, or i assume at least that they'd have to be as they never cease to amaze me day to day. there's still a few of us out there that have a fresh perspective on music, art in general, science, sadly not so much politics, philosophy even. we're trying!
@ebonics4everyone how bout fuck you...your the one who is a lost cause...You get on youtube to express your bullshit opinions that none wants to read...its fucking youtube comment on the video ABOUT THE VIDEO...You are acting like a kid and why litter an amazing songs comment box with some bullshit mid life crisis out cry...
@Cantrememberjack great message, and so sad :( people today or so complacent, distracted and feel defeated thanks to tv, movies, etc.
i admit to be new to this song........blown away. i've heard it before but didn't listen. damn the illuminati and NWO.
Obama: working to deindustrialize America via global warming as factories move to China and Mexico where labor is cheap and regulations are lax. how are we all so blind?!??!?!?!!?
@RebelHardy / oh GOD me toooooooooooo.i worked in a head shop about the same time.it was great...best music ever in our day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!sorry folks & lady gaga fans
this was a classic bY THE TIME i GOT TO THE uS THEY HAD DISBANDEDED. But david crosby and graham nash put a concert with carol king at the santa barbara county bowl. I love to tell you more But that was my last acid trip and I was frying on mr natural. By the way i had stopped taking that shit for years but that day my friend tim convinced me to break the diet . What a great concert by what I can remmember
Great song. I am 58 and I guess we were full of hope then....but there are some real bad people in the world who really mess things up. No sense pretending otherwise.
@tsanur This song makes me nostalgic for those, incredible, sweet days of hope. There was greater music, films, style,.. life in general. There was no HIV/Aids, terrorism ,, the rich trying harder than ever to demolish the middle class, political corruption like never before, a lack of innovation in music/films. Young people today think this time is great because they know nothing else. No one can imagine the peace, love, hope, magic and extraordinariness of the Sixties unless they were there.
One of my favourite songs .......... kinda dreamy and a little bit stoned , but sounds like an innocent and hopeful time . If only that time could come again . Could it ?? I guess not . Too bad .
NICE!!!!!!

100750 1 year ago

Man, I can't believe all this time has faded away.
We're still fighting the same war. Same problems so much more complicated------> I don't think there is a way out. Feel sorry for you young ones now.
MrDaBlanch 1 year ago
@MrDaBlanch Yes there is a way out, we can lead our kids and grandkids to the way out, do you really think that the government can stop 300,000,000 angry citizens, or even 50,000,000 angry citizens. It's our friggen duty to help them, we sold out, we let them down, now we need to show them what living life can be, and we need to lead them to that promised land. Why are we all a bunch of old cowards now?
isftpoawawh 1 year ago
@isftpoawawh
No action.
Technology.
pavaughn1 1 year ago
@pavaughn1 Technology has turned into a major problem, kids of today text they don't know face to face, they don't know history, that's our job to teach them. I'd be terrified if I was a kid now, and feel helpless, but we really aren't. While we talk about how bad things are, people in France, greece, Italy, they're out in the streets saying to their respective governments, "no way" and their governments have been forced to back track, we can do this here!
isftpoawawh 1 year ago
@isftpoawawh I'm one of the kids of toay, but I'm basically against that stuff, you can call me a "hippie" even. I agree with The way John Lennon did things too.. Except for the drugs.
maxwellsgianthammer 1 year ago
@maxwellsgianthammer Well that's good, except when John Lennon did his thing, the people still held the power in the USA, now that power is held by corporations, and love and flowers will not cut it with the people who run these corporations, the young, like you need to take back the streets, to realize it is your lives that will suck big time if things don't change, a broiling hot world, where the average person will be in all but name a slave of corporations!
isftpoawawh 1 year ago
@isftpoawawh Exactly.

Who do we have now to sing the songs that are powerful enough to snap people out of their placid acceptance of a government given over to corporate greed? Come back all you musicians of my youth, we need you more than ever. I promise not to ignore the message this time.

@Cantrememberjack Great post!
Bozo1360 1 year ago
@Cantrememberjack Often times has the man been considered Republican, however that is only for the righteous fear of a people's much unneeded uprising. One should realize the one to fear would most likely be a Democrat, one for strong a strong centralized government, supporter of big business, and one who does not respect the early American ideals of Laissez Faire. For it is indeed so the Republican man who fights for small business owners, often misconstrued as result of an anti-drug approach.
AppreciatorOfTheArts 1 year ago
@AppreciatorOfTheArts It's funny that you say that democrats are in favor of a strong centralized government because at some point I'd say when are economy shifted from producing to consuming ie richard nixon is a faggot and stfu. The shoe is on the other foot hahahahahahah ...
fallendarieus 1 year ago
@Cantrememberjack Concentrate on the prepubescent kids today. They are still malleable enough to be open minded about producing positive change. My generation (born '71) and the adolescents and younger adults today are a lost cause.
ebonics4everyone 1 year ago
@ebonics4everyone haha man that hurts a little bit but i'm gonna slightly disagree. i'm from the chicagoland area, born in '90. there are plenty of little shitheads from my generation, younger and older than myself, who are extremely confused, or i assume at least that they'd have to be as they never cease to amaze me day to day. there's still a few of us out there that have a fresh perspective on music, art in general, science, sadly not so much politics, philosophy even. we're trying!

Great song. I am 58 and I guess we were full of hope then....but there are some real bad people in the world who really mess things up. No sense pretending otherwise.
tsanur 1 year ago 22
@tsanur This song makes me nostalgic for those, incredible, sweet days of hope. There was greater music, films, style,.. life in general. There was no HIV/Aids, terrorism ,, the rich trying harder than ever to demolish the middle class, political corruption like never before, a lack of innovation in music/films. Young people today think this time is great because they know nothing else. No one can imagine the peace, love, hope, magic and extraordinariness of the Sixties unless they were there.
