Crowley was trying to leave, but Gates wouldn't drop it. The crime he committed was disturbing the peace, or disorderly conduct or whatever. Once he came outside, even though he was on his own property, he was in the public. It's much like playing your stereo on your front lawn too loud. Just because you are on your own property doesn't give you the "right" to break the law.

If you're disorderly and causing a disturbance (as Gates did), you bet you should be arrested before the situation escalates further. We don't pay police enough to docily accept public hostility that can incite a public reaction. It's high time that police were treated with respect in cases like this. my first impression was that the police over-reacted by arresting professor gates. The other side has made some very valid points that the police acted properly.

My town has a notorious reputation for it's cops that dole out speeding tickets like confetti. I asked them to watch my home while I was going to be out of town. I was late leaving & 6 cop cars swarmed in front of my home. They agitatedly asked me what I was doing there. I didn't get mad. Actually, I appreciated it! It made me feel safer.

You all can learn a lesson here. Keep your big yap shut, let the cop do their job & leave asap. Some people will cut off their nose, just to spite their face.
