@Jaladorm2000 Haha once they come out with the infra-red digital sonic thermal dialater model that is solar operated carb sync tool that connects to your i-phone, then Im all over it
@skiraf I do it every time I work on carbs. If you have a bike you ride regularly which requires minimal maintenance, its a good idea to incorporate a sync into your yearly maintenance interval. About as often as you change your tires should be fine.
@upfrontman No working tach on this bike at this time. I realize that it sounds in the video like it was racing but engine speed was estimated to be about 1500-2500. Ideal engine speed to sync a set of carbs is a fast idle, about 1000-1500.
@justin76bmw Yep the adjustment screws may be a little different, as well as the location of the ports to connect the brass rods, but the concept is the same and the same tool is used
Hi there, I noticed you were running pod air filters, I was just curious how you have your carbs jetted? Also, where did you pick up your carb synchronizer?
@robschwiesow Sorry man that bike is long since sold, I don't recall what it was jetted, altho check out my other videos I have one up on how to jet carburetors. The dials I got from ebay, $40
This is great. This is exactly what I was looking for. For some reason my 76 cb550k is idling at 5000 rpm. I think I have some air leaks and I need to adjust the carbs like you showed. I'm going to check the throttle cables to make sure the tensions are all set up to spec. Is there anything else I should look for?
@zack9577 O well actually in this video I mixed them up and put number 1 to carb 4 etc.... but really it doesn't matter. Sitting on the bike carb 1 is on the left, its just good to hook them up in order so you dont get them confused
@twistedengineering Well I cant say if they are or not, but yeah most syncing is done the same way. The only real differences are in the location of the vacuum ports, and the adjustment points, but once you find them its pretty universal.
I just bought a 1980 suzuki gs550. Was checking out your synchronizing video. Looking for a valve adjustment video and didn't see one. I've done the adjustment on 80's xrs and my 06 crf but this is my first road bike. Thanks for your video on this though. It helps to see how its done and the order.
@mrmaxstorey Ok so I hooked up gauges just like yours to my carbs. I had a huge up and down and quite rapid fluxuation. It did it at every rpm and I could'nt even begin to read the gauges. The carbs are velocity style and looked good when I tore them down. I don't think theres a vacuum leak. The only place it could leak is between the carbs and head. Theres only one vacuum line that opens the petcock and I removed and plugged that with no result. What's your thinkin? Stuck valve?
@shrtbxman Sometimes they do that, just imagine the middle of the fluctuation and go with that. Your compression seems a little low, what is the stock compression for your engine supposed to be?
@mrmaxstorey Look at you tube video " CB500K Carb Sync " This is what the gauges were doing to me through all rpms. I was told that the compression was ok and then that it should be aroung 140. Its 8.6:1. I'm gonna go check it right now just to see how it is now and with the motor warmed up
@shrtbxman OK well first off there was a couple things wrong with that video, but regardless that fluctuation should flatten out when you rev, like it did in his video. Even still, if you suspect your valve shims to be off, they need to be adjusted before you sync or else the readings wont be accurate.
@mrmaxstorey My compression test 1-120, 2-120, 3-90, 4-120. Not sure whats up with 3 but the plug looked good. By the way thanks for helping me out. Nothing beats some good free advice.
@shrtbxman Yeah 3 seems a little low, they all are low but tolerable. A valve job may be all that is needed, but you should start there before the sync
@mrmaxstorey It starts easy and runs fine. It sat for god knows how long and read 90-100 psi in every cylinder before I bought it. I haven't done a test since I got it running and de-glazed the rings so it could be better now. It runs good but I think its running a little lean. Doesn't knock or make noise. I haven't tore into the top to check clearances on the valves but thats because it starts well.
@diesel5355 No the adjustment is not made on the idle screw, I don't know of any other way to dynamically synchronize the carbs than the way I showed in the video. Besides, no way a 4-cyl bike can run on only 1 cylinder.
Yo mr max, I have a 78 cb750 and the main carb is acting weird. I have a 4/ 4 exhaust and I noticed that particular one had less exhaust pressure and is backfiring a lot. All of the other carbs seem to be operating fine. Could it be the pilot jet screw? I would like to get you're opinion before I go ripping the guts outta the carbs. I have them all set at the factory 1 1/4 turn from seated. Thanks.
@jointheliving Could be, also check that your mixture screw o-rings are in place, carbs are synched, and you have no vac leaks or loose vac lines. If not, it may be time to open those carbs up
I have an 81 cb750 and noticed that the one of the adjuster screws was destroyed so i replaced it and obviously need to sync it but could my unsync'd carbs be making my overflow hoses leak? cuz it was running fine before i replaced it. Also what id a normal idle for these bikes?
@super0steve96 No, synching your carbs probably wont have an effect on your overflowing hoses. Look to your float needles, they might be sticking or dirty, if they stick open then you will overflow. Normal idle should be 700-1100 for your bike, depending on your personal preference.
Hey, I have a question, i am looking for a good set of carb sync/vacuum gauges to finally do this to my bike. 76 cb550. I was just wondering cause i know normal vacuum for an automotive engine is 18-21" Hg. and yours were between 10-12. Is that what those old honda bikes be at?
@seanmichelle1 What is important about this process is not what the vacuum reads, but that they all read the same. This is a pretty cheapo set and it works just fine.
@PowdderFinger Oh haha I get ya well as for your mixture screw, I usually just bench-sync them according to whatever it says in the manual unless I experience a lot of popping out the exhaust. Usually its something like 2-3 turns out, I set it when I clean the carbs and just leave it.
Great videos man, this and the carburettor cleaning videos were fantastic for helping me do my own carbs, saved me a few hundred dollars too. Thanks a lot!
@mrmaxstorey , yeah, the cafe racer guys really dig those. they are some of the good ones. looks like a benji's seat too. they're outta nj i think. clip-ons noted.
Hey, Awesome videos! Quick question... I already have access to a synchronizer for a two carb bike, however my 600 fzr has 4 carbs. Is it possible to just hook it up to two carbs at a time and adjust them or do I need to get a four carb sinc kit? Thanks again!
@jrpaige7 Best to get a 4 carb kit, as sometimes the readings change a little bit when you are adjusting the other set of carbs, and you kind of have to switch back and forth a little until you get it right.
@mrmaxstorey Alright I'll look into that then, vice versa if I eventually wanted to use it on a two carb job could I use the four carb kit? Just wondering if I need to keep them both or not.
@jrpaige7 Yeah if you have one like the one I used in the video, it will work on a 2 cyl bike just as well, only plug in 2 of the hoses and you are good to go!
Hey man, I have the same synchronizer kit you have, but with adapter nipples for my seca II. With everything hooked up correctly, the gauges were bouncing violently, and wouldn't get steady - just kept rocking from (10 to 15 psi) even at a high RPM. Do you have any tips that could help me? Do I just have a set of crappy gauges?
@apwilliams30 Thats normal for some bikes. You just gotta crank your idle knob so that the bike is idling at a fast idle, maybe 1500 or 2000, and take the average reading for the dials, so if the needle keeps bouncing around between 10 and 15, then for the sake of this test, that cylinder is pulling 12.5. Use that number to do your synchronization.
@apwilliams30 The better gauges (available on ebay for about 100.) have a choker valve under the dials where you plug in the vacume lines- turn it clockwise, and the bouncing stops. If you are using a set of inexpensive gauges- they will get the job done, but the bouncing needles are annoying, you can't check the balance at lower RPM.I like to balance at 2000 RPM, then check again at idle speed. The autor did an excellent job demonstrating the fundamentals of balancing, and did a nice video,.
Hey wats up I'm about to start breaking down my carb and cleaning today I work in a dealership, which would u think will be better hand clean or put in a parts cleaner and how similar is this sync to a the cbr f3
@southmemphiz Unless you have a sonic ionizer, I think hand cleaning is the way to go. This sync job is similar to almost any bike, altho the adjusting screws may be a little different. Check your repair manual.
all your vids are awesome man. Please keep posting. You are indirectly fixing my motorbike for me all up here on the west coast in Canada!! lol. Any advice on undertaking a head gasket change on a 1980 GS850? I have heard the best thing is to just leave it, due to tha chance the head will warp when detatched. Any truth to that?
@Assassin4628 If you follow the recommended loosening sequence in your repair manual, there is no reason why your head should warp. However the first thing I do when I suspect my head is leaking is to re-torque the head bolts, especially on air cooled engines like yours, you can usually get more life out of your head gasket that way. Glad you found my videos useful, and don't give up on your project!!!
@burnoutking1971 I don't know they came with the bike. Glad you found the video helpful, this bike is featured in a couple of my other how-to videos as well.
76 cb550k 4-2 emgo stock jets 1 1/2 turns out bench synced by 1/2 turn out from when the slide bottoms out, not the slide screw. starts up great, when i go to sync i cant get below 3k or the bike dies, i can slowly get the bikes carbs around 5psi each, but the bike still wont idle under 2500. ive tried adjusting the air/fuel screw in or out a couple turns slowly 1/2 turn adjustments and i cant seem to find any real balance. either running at 2500 great or not running 1500 idle. ideas?
I would say this is a problem you need to sort out before attempting to synch the bike. Emgo is a type of high flow muffler right, is it indicated that you need different size jets for application on this bike? If not, I would start first at valves and timing, and then disassemble the carbs and make sure you have everything nice and clean in there, pay special attention to pilot jets. You also might have a lean mixture so check for vacuum leaks. That ought to get at it. Good luck
@mrmaxstorey i think its going to end up with me tearing the head back down and getting the cam spot on, the problem is that the head was decked and that the cam notch wants to sit at a 2 or 4 o clock instead of the 3 o clock "C -" position lining up with the top of the head. its either that or i stumble on the perfect timing notch that doesnt exist. know anyone who sells 550 adjustable cam sprockets?
Yes but the adjustment screws are not likely to be in the same place, consult your owner's manual for the specific process but the tools and synch technique should be similar.
Great video.. Thanks so much. I just picked up these gauges from c2c and was unsure where the rod's went, or where to start adjusting them. I have a 75 CB550F you can see how I cafe'd it sorta on my youtube channel I have a short video there of it. I just need to do the carbs now and I will be all set.
Glad you found it helpful, your ride is pretty sweet it looks great! Keep at it there is a world of difference when you synch the carbs, it just runs smooth as butter.
Thanks a lot for this vid. One question, though. Say all 4 carbs are out of whack with respect to each other...which carb (or gauge reading) should you adjust all of the other carbs to?
I just recently bought a '78 CB550K and I'm going to be doing this on it soon.
The important thing is that they are all the same to each other, reguardless of the reading of the dial. First set 1+2 to each other, then 3+4 to each other, and then the two sets to each other. It takes a little bit of fiddling around to get them right, but stay at it. If your tach works make sure you are idling at about 2k, or a "fast idle" if your bike does not have a working tach like mine.
This is more of a fine tuning procedure, generally done after you totally clean and restore the carbs, adjust valves, gap spark plugs and restore electrical system for proper timing and healthy spark, etc. If your bike runs rough then this procedure generally won't help much, but you should do it after you restore all the components of your fuel and electrical system. Good luck tho the summer is coming and everyone needs a project.
Awesome check out my other video about buying an old motorcycle, I use the cb550 and point out a lot of common problem areas with the bike. Good luck tho they are a lot of fun.
Hi there, nice video - I have a 1983 Suzuki GL 650 (or GS, I just got it:)) ) - It's the 650 cc 4 cylinder with 4 stroke 4 carburetors. I did open all 4 of them and cleaned everything after the boook but it doesn't idle, it dies if I don't rev it up. I increased the idle speed a little but then it idles a little rough. Does that mean somenthing is not syncronized? What should I check? I put new premium gas and cleaned the air filter. Thanks in advance.

76 cb550k 4-2 emgo stock jets 1 1/2 turns out bench synced by 1/2 turn out from when the slide bottoms out, not the slide screw. starts up great, when i go to sync i cant get below 3k or the bike dies, i can slowly get the bikes carbs around 5psi each, but the bike still wont idle under 2500. ive tried adjusting the air/fuel screw in or out a couple turns slowly 1/2 turn adjustments and i cant seem to find any real balance. either running at 2500 great or not running 1500 idle. ideas?

@xedge4lifex
Good luck

@mrmaxstorey i think its going to end up with me tearing the head back down and getting the cam spot on, the problem is that the head was decked and that the cam notch wants to sit at a 2 or 4 o clock instead of the 3 o clock "C -" position lining up with the top of the head. its either that or i stumble on the perfect timing notch that doesnt exist. know anyone who sells 550 adjustable cam sprockets?

can i apply the same thing to my fireblade 97 french model

@SuperMeanbean
Yes but the adjustment screws are not likely to be in the same place, consult your owner's manual for the specific process but the tools and synch technique should be similar.

Glad you found it helpful, your ride is pretty sweet it looks great! Keep at it there is a world of difference when you synch the carbs, it just runs smooth as butter.

is that screw a jet or a throttle screw?
myleskubicek 1 year ago
@myleskubicek The screw adjusts the slide up or down , either increasing or decreasing vacuum.

what kind of rear shocks do you have on it?
thrillbilly12 1 year ago
@thrillbilly12
I dont know they are all flash tho, don't do their job for sh!t. Proper shocks might be in line sometime down the road...

Thanks a lot for this vid. One question, though. Say all 4 carbs are out of whack with respect to each other...which carb (or gauge reading) should you adjust all of the other carbs to?
I just recently bought a '78 CB550K and I'm going to be doing this on it soon.
vigcs 1 year ago
@vigcs
The important thing is that they are all the same to each other, reguardless of the reading of the dial. First set 1+2 to each other, then 3+4 to each other, and then the two sets to each other. It takes a little bit of fiddling around to get them right, but stay at it. If your tach works make sure you are idling at about 2k, or a "fast idle" if your bike does not have a working tach like mine.
good luck!

does this procedure work on a gs550mz?
matthewmarrs123 1 year ago
@matthewmarrs123
Sure, any bike with carbs
mrmaxstorey 1 year ago
@mrmaxstorey so it will work with a 1982 suzuki katana gs550mz? because mine really needs the tuning bad.
matthewmarrs123 1 year ago
@matthewmarrs123
Good luck tho the summer is coming and everyone needs a project.

hello there how much would this kit cost because i really need to sync my carbs and if you get back to me asap i would really like that.
matthewmarrs123 1 year ago
Where'd you get your seat? I've got two CB550's and two CB350's. Looking for a good place to get old parts. I really need the four-into-one exhaust.

@nirvanaman3636
The seat came with the bike, altho I have seen them on ebay and craigslist too.
