  • okay i love that you put spike in the vampire thing

  • Only on volgbrothers videos can you find people complaining because they can't give blood ;)

  • I've always wanted to be a blood donor, but I found out I have a form of low blood pressure. It's something that makes me healthier, like smaller chances of getting heart attacks... But it also means I can faint quite easily and giving blood would trigger that, making me a hazard to myself for a couple of days after giving blood. Shit

  • In five months i'll be old enough to give blood, needless to say I'm quite excited.

  • i just kinda tuned out after Hank started talking about blood cells

  • I had a horrible experience the last time I gave blood. For some reason it was extremely painful that time, the needle fell out of my arm and I ended up bleeding everywhere; and nearly passing out. Then I found out that when the needle fell out of my arm an air bubble got into the nearly full bag rendering it all useless :( I then proceeded to feel sick the rest of the day.

  • Grandmas Cookies!

  • poiesis is from greek babes ;p

  • DFTBA - Best combination of 5 letters EVER?! ;D

  • I learned a lesson today. If I want to be flexible, I need to remove several of my vital organs.

  • I'm LGBT; so I'm banned from giving blood because of the draconian system in my country (Rep. of Ireland). Boom. =/

  • I gave blood for the first time in October of last year :)

I would've given some in December but I was on antibiotics :(

  • Over four minutes..?

  • MAN you get better post blood donation food than we do. I gave blood a month ago ish, but before that it had been over a year. Don't even have an excuse as there's a permanent blood donation centre in my city.

  • I don't weight enough and nor am I old enough D;

  • You are way better than my science teacher, especially because i can rewind you if i don't understand what's happening ^^

  • I'm not straight enough to give blood. :(

  • FOOD-GASM!!!

  • Comment removed

  • The last time I actually managed to give blood was the beginning of the school year, and it was fantastic because my veins weren't too small for once so I didn't get a humongous bruise. Since then I've tried twice, but my iron was too low.

  • I'm not healthy enough to give blood :(

  • I showed this to my high school science class. The worst they said about it was, "He talks to fast." I LOL'd so hard!

  • i tried to give blood but it stopped after about 2 minutes - i have terrible circulation in my hands and it seems my blood just doesn't want to go down that far xD

  • Did you get free cookies at the blood donation place?

  • I gave blood. I felt great about the act, on a moral standpoint.. but damn I really hate needles. Wouldn't want to do it again. I almost fainted after, my blood pressure and heart rate dropped very low (my heart rate was in the 40s). I was fine after a few minutes and felt totally normal after two days.

  • I gave blood last week

  • I gave blood last.....November? I gave double reds and it was an interesting experience because they had to pump the plasma back into me twice.

  • i thought my blood would be greenish! was not... :)

  • arteries hank, arteries with oxygen... unless you meant pulmonary vein... you can drop the essss n ur good;)

  • I've always wanted to donate blood, since I am O-, but now I get so squeamish I pass out ;(

  • :) Next time I donate I will get my 1 gallon pin, and I am only 18, gotta love the double apheresis machine and how it counts as two donations and saves more lives :D

  • I love that I can understand every word of this. By the way, hemoglobin bound to carbon monoxide is called carboxyhemoglobin.

  • @rx8on19ss actually there are many other alternatives..

    wwwDOTjw-mediaDOTorg/vid/vid01e.htm

I also have reasons to just not take blood as a Jehovah's Witness, since blood is holy, and we were told not to take it into us..

  • O negative or O posative :D

  • ADVENTURE TIME REFERENCE!!!

  • There are so many words in here that don't sound right to my British ears. Such as 'capillaries' and 'aveoli' said by me as - cap-i-llaries and av-ey-O-lie

  • the advert next to this video, is for the blood donation people, i think they're tryna tell me something here

  • i want to say "negatotal blood stud" in my next human genetics class.

  • Adventure Time :D

Okay I need to try corndogs

  • Thank you Hank, I used this to add another level of complexity to a rather boring biology paper

  • Too terrified of needles to give blood, plus I wasn't old enough until this year, but I'm going to try to be brave in two weeks at my school's next blood drive.

  • Hank there is an error in your video...you placed Edward Cullen among the vampires.

  • By the way all of the information I posted below can be verified at the Mayo Clinic. Google it and when you get there search for Blood Transfusion

  • I learned more about biology watching this video than I did in a whole year in science class.

  • I have O- too :D

  • Just some quick information on blood transfusion treatment.

The same as any other transplant, the body tends to reject things that are foreign, and you cant just cut out your blood that's bad like a toe and be okay.

All sorts of terrible diseases are transmitted through blood transfusions, causing tons of deaths that were easily avoided.

People who have blood transfusions are TONS more likely to die than people who use bloodless surgery. So as nice as it seems... NOT GOOD.

  • @anidude98 Your quick information is quite misleading and parts are just wrong. The most common reaction, when there is a reaction, when receiving a blood transfusion is hives, mild itching or fever. This is usually treated with anti-histamines and is no big deal.

For unknown reason in VERY RARE cases lung injury (TRALI) occurs but is very treatable and most people recover. Those who die from TRALI were usually very sick prior to the transfusion.

  • @anidude98 Any blood-borne infections are the fault of the screening process where the blood is taken not on the transfusion its self. Every donation is tested and screened (in the U.S.) so the chances of you receiving an illness from donated blood is for all practical purposes zero.

There is the possibility of an iron overload when receiving a transfusion which is treatable with iron chelation therapy and is not fatal.

There is the hymolytic reaction which you get when you receive the wrong

  • @anidude98 blood type but any time you receive a transfusion your blood is tested (very quickly) to see what your blood type is and what you can receive.

The rarest of them all is Graft versus Host disease which the white blood cells of the donated blood attack the cells of the the recipient and it can cause fever, rash and diarrhea. It is not fatal but it is a risk.

When you say people who have blood transfusion are TONS more likely to die than people who use bloodless surgery is wrong.

  • @anidude98 If you are in a situation where you need blood to live there is no other alternative. You will die 100% of the time when you do not receive blood that you need. There is not substitution that has anywhere near the success rate of blood transfusion. So please take the time to donate. You will save a life.

  • I havnt given blood but I have had 10 blood tests in my life (I'm 16) and I fainted once because of it. I'm b- I think.

  • I tried once cause I was once saved by donated blood, but it didn't work out too well so they made me stop. In my opinion I was doing just fine but apparently your head isn't allowed to feel heavy.

  • I give blood regularly because like Hank, i'm O negative.

  • i gave bloob 0

  • sorry, I have a phobea of needles and all things that intend to stick into me :/ I would love to *sarcasm not intended* but I really don't want to :P

  • I have never given blood. :\ I want to because I know it's good and stuff, but needles scare me. I'm hoping one day I'll actually build up the courage and give blood.

  • I gave blood last month. The blood donation system here in the Netherlands is really good =) It's not run by the government they track all their donors and you can get called in once you're ready for another donation and theres a need for blood in your area. Neat =D Im a registrated donor so I get called upon to donate once every 4 months or so

  • I'm not worthy of wanting to be part of this community :( i'm not smart enough

  • @twisto domt worry im a 6th grader. DFTBA

  • @twisto don't say that! everyone is good at diffrent thing. i am terrible at science and biology, but I am a nerdfighter (and i speak latin, frensh, dutch, english and i also understand some spanish an Romanian so you know i wouldn't consider myself dumb, yet i don't know a thing about science stuff ;D

  • I got thrown out of countless blood banks because I showed up drunk.

  • I'm not old enough to give blood ;(

  • @sophiezbff I don't weigh enough to give blood :(

  • @murderingmondays Hey it's better than me. According to the Red Cross I'm not heterosexual enough.

  • @murderingmondays I seriously hate needles and blood XD so I would REFUSE

  • @sophiezbff My school's blood drive is 3 days before my 16th birthday. Almost old enough... T.T

  • I can't give blood. Vegetarian... We are hated by blood banks... Naw, I just don't have enough iron. Sad face. :(

  • @KaylatardandPoncho I have low iron alot, I take a iron pill before I go and I am usually fine.

  • ADVENTURE TIME!!

  • oh... so the root 'poe' has to do with creation or generation? (cool if it does. onomatopoeia poetry!!!!!!!!)

  • WWWWOOOO!!!! LEARNING IS FUN!!!

    THE MORE YOU KNOW!

    GO JOE!!!

    I mean Hank! GO HANK!

  • No edge...

  • I gave blood two wednesdays ago and I am also a blood stud with O-negative. It was pretty awesome because It took less than five minutes for me to fill a 1 liter bag. The nurse also complimented me on my 62 bpm heart rate and asked if I'm a runner. Donating blood is so awesome!

  • Hank, I'm using this video to explain the circulatory system to my EMT students. I think it might be the only way they'll get it.

I'm AB+ (the universal recipient!), and I give blood every 2 months, or as often as they'll let me since I'm slightly anemic. All of my blood goes to our local blood bank, which supplies blood to hospitals in our region. All blood collected for this blood bank stays local, unlike Red Cross which can end up anywhere in the country. :-)

  • It really bugs me that American English leaves the "a" out of so many words, such as haemoglobin :/

  • @crayolaupyournose It really bothers me how British English adds all these extra letters that don't need to be there.

  • @bailey9695 we just like sounding smart knowing how to spell them and because letters are there to use so lets stuff as many as we can into one word

  • I'm not allowed to, because of medical problems

  • that ending was great xD

  • Why can't you be my Science teacher? :\ But it's to late now...

  • I had to give blood to the doctor if that counts.....they wanted to see if I had any signs of diabetes..... I'm 12 and normal-weighted.....:/

  • @Testra1000 It could be the 2nd type of diabetes, the low blood sugar one, you dont have to be over-weight for that?

  • buffy vampires are the only vampires

  • You should talk about blood types and platelets and the lypmatic system and adventure time is awesome!!

  • They never take my blood. I wish the would. Then i could feel like im saving lives...

  • The speed.... It's incomprehensible! Also, is the whole "acidy, H+, Thing" the reason your muscles feel like they're on fire when you do a lot of running, or is it just cause I'm ridiculously unhealthy. EPIGENETIC FAIL!

  • i have never given blood because i'm not old enough yet i might possibly when i'm older not sure though i get a but thingy around needles

  • I can't give blood because I've had Lyme disease....stupid ticks.

  • ha, I have A- too. People love my blood

  • wow my brain hurts now

  • BE MY SCIENCE TEACHER.

  • @UntitledBroadcast SciSHOW!

  • I use to donate regularly as a method for getting over an aversion to needles, getting use to the pain and all so I wouldn't twitch. Can't anymore because of medical problems.

  • @KittenKoder That's so bad ass! (Not the medical problems, those tend to suck.)

    DFTBA

  • @GONEmypurpleflapjack Why thank you. Face your fears! It's fun ad profitable.

  • @KittenKoder I'm afraid of elevators, so my fear is actually good becuase stairs are good exercise.

  • I think we could use hemoglobins to get rid of excess carbon monoxide in the atmosphere.

  • Oh thank God I was looking through old vlogbrothers videos and found this, I have a test on the circulatory system in three days.

  • @ElizabethHCooper Same here! My AP Bio class just covered this.

  • Right when you said "the air that you just breathed in" I exhaled :D

  • @Storm13Cloud Don't you mean inhaled? :P

  • @xPrincessKx No... I did not inhale :/

  • Well, I'm 16, scared of needles, and I don't like the sight of blood. I'm also not the biggest fan of pain. I don't think I'll be giving any blood any time soon.

  • I have hemophilia... I can't give blood :(

  • a while ago.. last time i tried my haemoglobin levels were to low :/

  • how did you know that my names jon?

  • 5-stars for The Clash

  • i'm not old enough yet to give blood

  • Thank You Nerdfighteria... Got An A+ In Biology =) NERDFIGHTERS FTW

  • I have thalassemia, so I can't give blood. :(

  • I actually was breathing small amounts of Carbon monoxide between age 3-11 due to a leak at home and being away from it gave me headaches and random pains threw out my body it got to the point where it was seeping out threw the pores in my skin and slightly altered my brain chemistry, when friends came over to my house they became ill within two hours and were throwing up at my house every time while i felt fine because my immune system took it in as normal, so basicly i had poisonous skin once.

  • Yes, sir, Mr. Green.

  • Wow, so many people can't give blood...quite sad! I recently can give blood (I was in Belize and had to wait a year to make sure I don't have malaria in me), so now I just have to find a time when (a) the blood van is on campus (b) I've eaten, and (c) I've had enough sleep. Probabilities are admittedly not high, but I'm optimistic. I just hope I won't have the same experience as last time--a foot-long bruise and an inability to move my arm for several weeks.

  • I only weigh like 98 pounds and I unfortunately do not think I weigh enough to give blood. Lame.

  • You are now breathing manually *Troll face*

  • It makes me happy that you said The Clash, and not the Sex Pistols.

  • I really like that people are still commenting on this every hour or so A YEAR LATER. Nerdfighters=awesome.

  • I wish I could give blood but I'm borderline anemic, and I hardly have enough blood to support my own body...

  • Adventure Time!

  • It's amazing how our bodies can constantly do these amazing things without us even realizing or understanding it.

  • poetry and all related words are actually greek words :P

  • I'm O+, and I give blood every eight to ten weeks!

If you can't find a blood drive near you, call your local hospitals. Chances are good they have a blood donation center (and the nurses at my hospital are WAY better at their jobs than the Red Cross people).

  • I don't think they'd let me even if I wasn't afraid of needles. (I'm borderline underweight)

  • I'm O+. So close to universal!!

  • 0:50 anyone notice the (EXTREMELY HOTT) image of spike from buffy the vampire slayer?? TwT

  • I really want to be able to give blood when my school has their annual blood drive, but alas, I'm too young. Once I'm a bi 9lder I definatly want to do it. Anyone know the age restrictions for the red cross?

  • @McGeek1220 I think it's 16 with parental consent? Don't quote me on that though.

I'm sure it's on the red cross website somewhere.

  • I'm too skinny to donate.

  • as a fellow O Negative donor, thank you for donating. it's awesome stuff, the idea of saving a life. :)

  • I think donating blood is one of the coolest and most awesome things that people do, I mean you are giving a bit of yourself to make sure people live! Though I am very happy and grateful for people who give blood it also makes me sad when I see blood buses because I know I cant donate blood, not because of some biological disorder but because I'm a gay man. Oh well I shall just get other people to donate until I am allowed to.

  • but...i hate corndogs =(

  • thanx dude now i dont need to study that system for my test

  • I'm A+ blood type. I would have been SCREWED during the DW Christmas Invasion.

  • @ashliebelle Me too, apparently. I forgot I was A+... I thought I looked at mine when I watched that episode...

  • Thank you Yuotube, now i can slow down the videos so i can understand.

  • wait if you're giving blood aren't you technically just bleeding into a tube which emptys into a bag?

  • I can't give blood because I'm too skinny. :(

  • I actually received six pints of blood as part of major surgery to repair my leg after a car accident. So I'm not allowed to donate, but I would like to thank you for doing so. It saves both life AND limb.

  • Comment removed

  • Hey Hank. I'm a teenaged heart patient who takes digoxin to help regulate said heart problem. Should I or should I not give blood. I kinda want to but I'm not sure.

  • I'm trolling

  • I'm O + which is not the universal blood type but is the next most compatible blood type.

I don't give blood because the red cross has out dated ideas about sex and sexuality which means they refuse to take my blood...

  • @Unknownboi88

Please don't blame the Red Cross for following outdated federal mandates regarding blood donation. They don't have a choice.

  • @socorrolime Its not a Federal mandate I'm in Australia and the US government has no authority here

  • @Unknownboi88 I have mixed feelings about blood donation because of this. The part of me which wishes to save lives outweighs the part of me which knows it's wrong for you guys to be excluded based solely on sexual orientation. Hopefully the rules will change.

  • I can't give blood because of a chronic iron deficiency (cause my body sucks at absorbing it), and I had glandular fever a couple of years ago. I really wish I could help other people, but first I must help myself.

  • I'm O Neg and I donated regularly up until about two years ago and then I stopped because of some medication I was on, but yeah, donating blood is easy and doesn't hurt at all, and I'm someone who is normally quite squeamish.

  • Yeah, you see, I'd love to give blood...Except I wouldn't. Having a crippling fear of hypodermic needles is no fun. I really hope I don't have O-, no, I don't actually know, then I'd feel bad for all the people I could give to.

Also, my cat is making snoring sounds

  • Blood is super cool. Hmm, lets see.. the last time I gave blood I think was in November. It was my fifth or sixth time and I always try to encourage people I know to donate, but unsurprisingly many of them hate the idea of needles :P Oddly enough, I always feel super jazzed whenever I donate. It always puts me in a good mood, and that's always a plus!

  • Comment removed

  • The sad thing is, I also talk that fast

  • I've given blood twice now. I usually don't mind needles at all, but the ones they use for blood donations are so HUGE that it makes it hard not to squirm watching them shove it in your arm. :S Other than that though, no problems. I just have a hard time remembering when I'm able to give blood again to go do it.

  • I donated my first blood, one year ago when I turned 16. I finally reached the age to donate blood in Hong Kong so i went my friend that is 3 days older than me. :) It felt great, and they give great cookies.

  • I've always wanted to give blood. I have Mediterranean Anemia, which is all the fun of regular Anemia, but not.

It's a genetic mutation in my blood that tells blood-testing things that I have very low iron, even though for me, those levels are completely normal. No matter how much iron I take in, the machine will always say it's not enough. Thanks to this, I can't give blood and if I were to make babies with someone who also has it, our kid would have a black hole where a face would be.

  • What would haemoglobin be if oxygn was vegetarian?

  • I love the idea of donating blood and love people who can do it. My first time I nearly fainted and asked to have the needle out, at which point the bag broke creating a ft wide pool of blood with large splashes. That didn't make me as ill as having the needle in me did. my second time, I also failed to last more then 1:30 with the needle in. I'm rather skinny and barely weigh enough, so the needle feels like it's stretching me >.> but I'm trying again in a few years when I learn to eat more.

  • I tried giving blood once. Thy said I don't weigh enough to donate :(

  • i gave blood about 2 months ago, but i clotted half way through. the interesting part was that the clot actually formed right at the tip of the needle, so when they pulled out the IV, it made a tiny suction sound, and it felt like someone was pulling off a scab waaaayyyy too early :P

  • Cant deal with needles :( Wish I could

  • I can't give blood because I have alpha thalassemia which is the cause of my anemia. It makes me sad because I have no aversion to blood (from years of blood tests and stuff), so I'd be totally fine with donating it.

  • I was going to give blood at a blood drive at my school last year, but they told me I couldn't because I didn't weigh enough, even though I'm actually normal for my height. A couple weeks later I asked my doctor about it and she said I should actually be able to give blood. Stupid Red Cross people.

  • I wish I could give blood. Unfortunately, I'm medicated for depression/anxiety up to my eyeballs, and I'm anemic. So they don't want my blood. =/

  • I gave blood at the beginning of November (my first time, I had just turned 16). I found out that I am A+, and that I have teeny, tiny veins. It took 15 minutes and 3 nurses to get the needle in. GAAAAHHHHH so so painful. I'm also anemic, so I had to take 2 iron supplements to get my iron high enough to donate. But for some reason, I think I'll donate again.

  • I have hemophobia. This video killed me. And biology classes.

  • i sometimes forget he's a biochem major.

  • I just gave blood earlier today. And it was really bad. I had to lay down for like an hour because I kept almost passing out whenever I sat up. And last time I gave blood I legitimately did pass out--woke up on the floor. And I really don't like the whole needle thing. But I'll keep giving blood because it's important and awesome :)

  • I'm not allowed to give blood, which upsets me because I really want to!

  • Elegant, yes. The circulatory system is a spectacularly awesome feat of engineering. Giving blood has absolutely no adverse effects on me (I have never felt faint), does not hurt in the slightest (though I did get a bad bruise once), and I get orange juice and a cookie, plus it makes me feel wonderful inside. I also have the most common type of blood known to humankind, so I'm not frequently sought out, but I am nevertheless very well treated. Don't forget to drink water to plump those veins.

  • I think my local blood bank has that exact tablecloth on the snack table...

  • @meghantucker1998 I feel ya, I litraly KO'd a dentist who would not get the needle out my gum, it then took 4 men to pin me down and get it all over with (I was 14 at the time)
