Legend of Zelda : The Minish Cap - Boss 4 - Big Octo

This Octorock is very unusual. Since when did Octorocks have flowers growing on them and since when did they have an ability to create a smoke of darkness. I'm guessing his body heat is keeping the ice thawed. How do his rocks cause him to freeze? Did the rocks have ice inside them or did his body temperature severely drop after getting hit by the rocks. I also notice that fire didn't finish him off. Did you have to flame him to drop his defense so his rocks could kill him?
