If you want to see a band who sounds a thousand times better live than on their albums, go see Veil of Maya. I'm not even a die hard fan of them or the genre. I'm practically a hipster, for God sake. But I've never had a better concert experience in my life than when I saw these guys. In one night, after I saw these guys, I turned from a hipster girly girl into a thrashing machine. I wanted to fucking move buildings and fight like Leonidas. Yeah. They're THAT good.

I definitely agree with you. I listen to mostly indie & house music. My boyfriend is a HUGE hardcore/deathcore fan. At first, I rolled my eyes at him when he played Veil of Maya, Chelsea Grin, etc. I realized this music is all about power & pure expression. I saw Veil of Maya live this week, & was completely blown away by their technicality, expression, & charisma. I'm a "girly girl" and I ended up trashing in the circle pit at the end of the concert because I was that moved.

Simple or not, they are pretty much usually entirely rhythmic. Rhythms can be incredibly driving and powerful IMO.
