Its obvious that the nose gear is not present... Its also obvious that the crew members are running because they know the Government is now after them for property destruction.
Keep in mind that mid-air refueler had a nose gear malfunction, a-la the keeping the nose up as long as possible, then touching it down gently to cause minimal damage.
Awesome emergency landing, he kept the nose off the runway as long as he could which is exactly how to do it. Also a "heavy" aircraft is anything over 255,000 lbs.
That's nice that you're an A&P, I'm an Airframe mechanic, and it's not that expensive... relatively. Pilot goes back to drinking, we have to spend a few months cleaning up HIS mess.
I know this isn't a common problem, but when it does happen, it seems to usually be the front landing gear. Wouldn't designing a plane with an auxiliary front gear be safer?
@priyonjoni Why no 'auxiliary?-Weight, space, weight, cost, complexity, weight. And to top it off, the plane, as you may notice, is actually in good shape. These kinds of landings generally don't mess the plane up very much. Repair bill is pretty small compared to weight, cost, and complexity of a aux. landing gear.
@cpovey1 It's just looking at that makes me wonder what it does to the integrity of the airframe. It's always something little and overlooked in a repair that can cause an explosive decompression. Remember the story of the 10 year crack on the Jap Air 747?
@priyonjoni WhileI am not an aerospace engineer, my best friend from college is. He is also a pilot. He says that the damage this causes is generally pretty minor. When you think about it, the same loads are being applied to the plane wether a landing gear is used or not.
That's NOT a "Heavy" hard landing. That was a textbook and very smooth crash landing. The only thing he could have done more impressive would be to land it at a Hooters parking lot.
@PeaceReleaseMe you do realize he didn't retract the landing gear on the ground, if you notice the forward landing gear never came out, probably some technical problem, all things considered that was a fantastic emergency landing, no errors on the pilots part what so ever
KC-135A model... nose gear failure... braking hard caused brake to overheat catching fire... must've been locked up good, since they have manual release in the cockpit and pump to lock it in place... Miss the old "water burners"
When I used to work on airplanes, there were "a few" times when the cause of a failed landing gear extension was because of a retreaded tire that was slightly too big and it would catch on the wheel well opening. As a precauction, we always did a gear swing (light aircraft) to check clearances..and we did find a few that were too big.
@TheThruster24 how does this comment get 41 "likes", that means there were at least 42 people not paying attention, just like a majority of others have said, this is an example of a terrific emergency landing, mechanical problems occur and when they do it's up to the pilot to "save the day", so this is the furthest from a fail I've ever seen
@lifes2short2waste completely agree - sure there would have been some damage, but no explosions, no (probable) engine damage. Look at how the pilot held the plane after the two middle wheels landed, just superb skills!
@justforever96 i know i work for us.army 6 years from bosnia,iraq,kuwait,afganistan....in bosnia and iraq i work on flight line with airforce guys...and i proud with that and i know theys capatibiles,,,sry of my english..salute

I don't know where the video is filmed; I agree it looks like a military base. I've looked and I can't find any information about this incident at all. There is another video of this same landing, filmed from the air from the cockpit of a fighter jet. Look up "KC135 Hard Landing" on YouTube, the same as I typed it.

Hey I remember this I was there to watch it. This happen at Edwards AFB CA in 1987. They didn't land heavy they flew in from another base and requested to land at Edwards because the runway is 25,000 feet long plus they have a 46,000 dry lake bed runway where the Space Shuttle lands. They flew in circles over Edwards to burn all their fuel before this landing. The hangar you see in the background at the end was where they kept the secret B-2 bomber before it became public. Great job by the crew!
There is a 'crew entry chute' directly behind the nav station but it would not be accessible with the airplane on its nose. There are also emergency exits (the sliding side windows (l & r side) that can be used for emergency egress, but that would put the crew into the flames. It would take too long to open the main cargo hatch, so the overwing emergency hatches are the next best bet.
