  • Thomas Bangalter - Spinal Scratch

    ( 1:05 -> 1:25 )

  • this is simply magic i first heard in the 70 and i still get a great buzz out it after 40years

  • /watch?v=GrMg_AwibrM&feature=youtube_gdata

  • Big G's really sounding nice. This cut seems to be above the rest when you hear all the stuff he puts into his tunes back in the day notwithstanding his guest artists. Trip...Yer fan, B

  • this is pure sex

  • @hallucinatinggreen true...real eargasm d'_'b

  • My favorite song of George Benson. Gotta love it

  • soooo great !!

    thx for upload!

  • the world is more of a ghetto now than in the time when GB wrote this classic track. Thanks b to God for musicians like GB & Marvin Gaye (mercy mercy me) & Philly All Stars (clean up the ghetto) who tried, through their music, to instil some hope by understanding the message of the lyrics. Will anyone listen...don't think so! thank you fr uploading such a fab tune my friend.

  • @alantbull1 Benson didn't write this song. This was done originally by the funk band "War" (fronted by Eric Burdon for awhile) and written by members of them

  • @taildragger53 thanx for your comment re GB / War / The World is a Ghetto even at the ripe old age of 110 years I'm still learning of my peers in the music scene. Check out my Youtube playlist and give me your opinion. By the way, just listening to Brass Con "shakit", Fatback "bustop" & War "galaxy" fab tunes..how I wish I could go back in time to those happy days of funk, soul, fusion, jazz & disco funk. Last week I was at the Scottish Soulweekender, saw Kim Weston perform, aged 71!

  • @alantbull1 You are far from 110!

I am than you older by 8 yrs or so. Originally from London , UK.

I have played jazz guitar since 1970 and have seen the finest (luckily enough)

    You have a superb playlist.

I recall the days of Robbie Vincent from the 1970s. Great days!

Kim Weston is from the days of real soul music.

  • @taildragger53 Ive never heard War play it like this...

  • Bought all his vinyl at the very moment I heard him for the first time on a obscure Dutch radiostation. Playing the guitar and singing at the same time, it feels like a long vacation at a far away beach of a never ending summer.

  • Thank You for posting this but George was NEVER Psychedelic! Can you change your intro ?It is an insult to "DA MAN!".Please.XX

  • GB´s voice in some frames sounds like Steve Wonder. He´s a great singer too.

  • @soycervesero22

To me he's more like Donny Hathaway, vocally, but then Donny influenced Stevie Wonder.

  • One of his greatest solos

  • When I first heard this George Benson song on 95.7 WROQ in the mid 1970's many radio stations would play a variety of music. Though it was a rock station they would play jazz on late Saturday nights and I would get to hear great songs like this. Thank you for posting.

  • Big Pun...Glamor Life!!

  • nice

  • I saw George at Avery Fisher Hall in 1977 playing this album. Unreal and will never be duplicated. George was never psychodelic.........but pure jazz.

  • George Benson was never psychedelic! He was the Rev G. Benson and no one on drugs could play so true and clean.I saw him LIVE in the 70's and he was totally against drugs. He delivered God's love through his pristine style and beauty and mastery over his instrument. He preached with his music, it uplifted all.

  • verry nice ....

  • wot an intro top top tune , pemps 78 i think wi a bit o brass construction, slave you get the picture ?? funky funky all nite long,,, ace

  • hello my friends, I have uploaded a version with much fatter sound than this one. I also illustrated the story benson tells with some images, showing a bit of the despair he feels in the imrpov. thanks all.

    watch?v=Y5rLQN5DoMA

  • ZION I - INNER LIGHT

  • I knew it! Big pun and terror squad - glamour life!!

in the beginning of this beatifull song

  • this sounds alot like three 6 mafia - gotta stay fly

lol although this guy is way cooler : )

  • Is this song available on one of his albums?

  • Of course. It belongs to "In Flight" (1977) - Warner.

  • yeeeeee!!!!

  • NEVER HEARD THIS VERSION BEFORE!! i AM BLOWN AWAY!! AWESOME POST!!!

  • @chiliwilly39 It's off the 12" single that hey issued

  • Simplemente delicioso!!

  • Hi i am about to buy a guitar and i'm really into wes montgomery, benson, joe pass and ...

Considering i'm on a budget of less than 800 dollars could someone reccomend a guitar thanx.

  • Check out the ibanez artcore custom AG 95. You can visit their website. It cost me $730 canadian funds, which will be even less U.S. It is definately worth a lot more than the price tag.

  • i am not 100% sure on prices but you may be able to get an "ESP Xtone" for around that price pretty damn solid guitar.

  • It's a good mixture of both his vocal and instrumental artistry. You might be able to find the CD on ebay for sure.........al

  • where can i get this song?

  • This version of "The world is a Ghetto is on his CD entitled "In Flight" The entire CD is fantastic!

  • Is it intrumental?

  • Sure you're right. That album is fantastic in every song.

  • I like how they transpose this song at the middle

  • Please please please never take this off youtube

  • great!

  • just gorgeous

  • does anybody know were I can find the house version of this track?

  • It's called "Spinal Scratch", and it's by the legendary house musician, Thomas Bangalter. I posted the video on my profile, just search for it.

  • thank you for your reply but thats not the track i was looking for! spinal scratch just has samples of this track. what i am looking for is the remix. thanks again though...

  • He's just an amazing guitarist, for me the complete mix of soul, funk and the harmonic intelligence of jazz.

  • It's too bad that Benson's good songs (like this one) aren't his better known ones D:

  • It is cover man

  • j'adore cette musique elle me repose elle é tro calme george benson il tro fort

  • george is love

  • This dude made one of WAR's hits cool in his own way. I like it

  • Holy cow!!! As wicked as the first time I heard it. Rifting between 5:35 and 6:25 is the best I've ever heard..Damn can't thank you enough for that!

  • 5 stars!

  • this is alright but the long intro sort of sounds like the backround music thats on ceefax at night.

  • Best guitarist of all time.

  • I've decided I don't want hymns at my funeral. This is all that is needed. I can't think of a better song to be sent off with.

  • Dont think about your funeral (although this is a good choice for music) you know life and death is the same thing at the end of the day just change. Life is change, and death just another change. There is no life really to lay claim to, its like a pitched tent on the surface of the ocean. it seems like it is stable but its shifting always and thats the beauty of it, thats what makes it so fragile and free and marvelous.

  • what an admirably strange way of looking at existence good sir.

  • Awesome!

  • benson y de los mejores solos de jorge dalto.

  • wow this is a really incredible song.

    George Benson is amazing.

    Thanks for posting

  • its not a war song?:O

  • Exlente cancion, muy buena la perte de la guitarra junto con la voz saludos a todo el mundo, les dedico esta cancion...

  • aie aie aie it's so good

  • it's like you hear influence for the later dance in the years 80-90. like music from buscemi in belgium or something in that genre. it's nice. And the scatting, improvision peace at the end makes it... nice. like it.

  • where can i download this song?

  • das ist für kenner

  • He cuts up the chorus the third time it appears at around 3:23

  • great song. CTROCK THE HIP HOP ROCK GUITAR ARTIST

  • Love this tune!

  • I have the "In Flight" LP

  • Very relaxing but at the same time jammin'. Such is the power of jazz

  • I Agree.Roll and listen..

  • i agree. keep jammin' >:3

  • my father listen to this when I was growing up and now I still love this song when I hear it.

  • oh dude i've been trying to hear this song for the last couple of years wow this song is so soulfull.

p.s. it was sampled to make a big pun song the glamor life

  • the king of cool

  • whew!!!

  • rock on

  • thomas bangalter used this to make spinal scratch omg spinal scratch ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Outstanding song.

  • Actually, I think he is quite a good singer, he might as well have become a singer "only". Even Al Jarreau said Benson knows how to sing certain things even he (Al) can't sing.

I like the way his voice sometimes fuses with his guitar. Plus, he can sing all his stuff live without missing a note, unlike many other singers.

And he is a funny guy, watched a couple of interviews, very positive attitude. One of just a few stars I admire without there being any buts.

  • gooseflesh !

so great, start singin' after 4.11 minutes...

  • This is just superb - a masterpiece. I've listened to it numerous times over the years - it generates a lot of energy every time!

  • Sublime !!!

  • Yay!!! I found a replacement for Jamiroquai!

  • you just can't compare......

  • jamiroquai are one of a kind and benson is other:) Both are great:D

  • r u kidding ??????????????????

    its not funny

  • I didn't say they were alike, did I!?

  • You don't even need words with a guitar player like Benson, youn can still feel the meaning of the song. George Benson G.O.A.T.

  • super

  • he really got soul!!!!!

  • Walking down the street foggy eyed looking at the sky stary eyed searching for a place weary eyed crying in the nite teary eyed..... yes the world is a ghetto

  • Walking down the street foggy eyed looking at the sky stary eyed searching for a place weary eyed crying in the nite teary eyed..... yes the world is a ghetto

  • This has to be one of the best covers of a song I have ever heard. He smoked it!!!

  • excelent guitar player, is like Wes montgomery!

  • actually he was hired to be a sort of successor to Wes, an image which he tried to refute in his early works

  • Greatest guitar player of all time!

    Smokin!

  • GOAT is up for grabs...Scotty Anderson, Joscho Stephan, Birelli Lagrene, Jimmy Rosenberg....may all have a claim...not to mention Joe Pass, Robt Conti and Tommy Emmanuel...worthless to compare in this way actually....

  • George! Period! Most versitile, best right hand attack, best soul. He's the daddy! Bassnase

  • George is great...just no Howard Roberts--the greatest jazz guitarist ever-

  • idiot

  • George! Period! Most versitile, best right hand attack, best soul. He's the daddy! Bassnase

  • George Benson...such an incredible guitar player. Amazing voice.

  • What The Funk!=]

  • ey das ist die vinylversion ......ohne bilder

  • pretty

  • Great tune. Thanks for puttin' it out here.

  • This song get me back to the years at the University of Havana. What times !!!!

  • YES IS FENOMENAL

  • Great version. The original War version is something else as well. Much underrated band!

  • Absolutely. In particular, I love their instrumental on their green "Music band" album. They did that version on a BBC recorded concert in the late 70's. I've got it on video. Brilliant live

As you pointed out, a hugely underrated band.

  • Hey, can you post that? Live WIAG kicks ass! The ONE thing that just stops making WAR LIVE short from being the greatest live album ever.

  • dude WAR is my all time favorite band ive seen them live and they rule!

  • Hey ....! Take a sad song and make it better!!

I know and love this by War, yet @ the same time this is something else...yea...really...well.....hey!! Mucho gaspo! Diggin' it man : )

  • baby o baby i'm feelin this!!

  • excellent tune,great guitar player!

  • supersin beee George benson....

  • what kind of guitar does he play?

  • high end yamahas and ES gibsons i think

  • George plays the "George Benson" Ibanez.

  • He let me play his guitar on stage at the Birdland Jazz Club back in December 2000. It is not the same as the store bought model. Not by a long shot. It was the tobacco finish that I played. It was set up unbelievably well.

  • He use Ibanez GB 100 (smaller archtop) and GB 200 (17 inch archtop)

  • Guy's give it up!!!!!!

I think what your all trying to say is that George Benson is the bomb! not as in atomic

  • This cut is from the "In Flight" album. I remember my father had this on 8-track tape. BTW that's badass Harvey Mason Sr. on drums. NICE!!!!

  • george benson is ridicolusly brilliant!i am off to itunes store to buy loads of his albums

  • chakasmoothjazz; thanks very thanks my friend...

  • This was one the baddest jazz rhythm sections of the 1970's: Benson(gtr) Banks(bs) Mason(dr)McDonald(ps)Upchurch(rhythm gtr) Dalto(a.piano) Foster(kb). This is the sound that George is most noted for; string arrangements made the music so classy, without harming any of the jazz and funk overtones that this great music was noted for during this era. Timeless Baby!!

  • wot was so bad about it i thought it was good!!

  • 'baddest' is an expression used in american english to signify something amazing, good in quality.

  • how will we know if something is bad? if all the good things ar bad..if i go to mcdonalds and the food is bad i take it back and get a refund!!

  • it never said it is bad... 'baddest' has nothing to do with bad... the superlative for bad is 'worst', not 'baddest'

  • i see so this song is the worstest i have herd for a long time....and goodest baddest so when i go out tonight for a meal and they ask how was my food? i will say that it was off!! meaning it was the baddest"

  • Why are you so worried about comments on youtube being literal?

  • why are you so worried that i am worried about the comments on youtube.. and i am on utube so how can i be worried about somthing on a diff site as i dont know wot they are saying untll i look" if i go and look on a diff one i will let you know then you can go and have a look and let me know wot you fink.. i also like cake,,,,,,,

  • I (along with 95% of the English speaking world) can understand what the guy says when he describes the music as the "baddest". What is your problem? Why bust his balls over it? You must be drunk.

  • gearge benson. Baddest mutha fucka of all time1

  • Yes, groovy, driving body & sould forwards... Great Benson, on his best... Make me feel so good, so happy, so dancing...

  • mr bangaldo has sampled the guitar ''The World Is a Ghetto'' by WAR the version by done George Benson...pitched, streched, flanged, etc... what about the ghetto by the other sampled addict bobby sinclarette!

  • George Benson makes "love" to the music... (not necessarily sex!) with care, softness and desire. There it goes fellas, the key to making a woman fall in love completely, courtesy of George Benson! :)

  • George akazvingera

  • If you listen to right around The 5.18 mark you'll hear Benson start to do some vocalese to the electric guitar which to me is the best I've heard.

  • ohh, vocalese, thats what thats called - nice

  • I like the way this tune sounds and feels. The electric guitar is almost singing without words. The piano chords are soulful and the music music is a fusion between funk/soul/cool jazz.

  • damn that is nice.
