I use whippets for climbing more than as a self arrest tool. That's why I use 2 of them. Yes, they can work for self arresting in certain snow, but they don't work that well in my personal experience. However if you are using them for self arrest it would be easier and more likely you could stop with 2 of them. I could be wrong? I use them mainly for climbing steep chutes, hooking trees and rocks on the ascent.
I'm puzzled by your use of *two* whippets... I would think the second one would be most likely to tear the shit out of you as you are trying to use the first to arrest. Have you ever used both for a combat arrest? What's your line of thinking here? If you wish, please reply to zarmot at yahoo.
