Can´t compare musicians.The musicians don´t contest to each other.Every one have something particular.Weckl is Weckl,but in my opinion Rosenblatt have more musicalty plus the same technique.No,can´t compare Patitucci,Nathan East,Marcus Miller,Victor Bailey,Wooten,etc.Same thing with the others jazz musicians.In the classic genre can´t compare,Menuhin,joshua Bell,Itzak Perlman,Iascha Heifez,Itzak Stern so on.It´s the biggest mistake to compare...
Here we go again with these ridiculous comparisons, which are meaningless. I'm also a huge fan of Weckl, but honestly, in terms of ability Joel is right there, but gets about 1/100th of the recognition of Dave. He is a HUGELY underated drummer!!
@HR2635 absoluthe thruth dear!!! nothing to add at all!!! both are wonderful drummers!!! but this is a great band ever!!! it's simply wonderful wonderful........ lol
farr too much like chick corea and the electric band with the eric merianthal sax front...circa exact same festival...look them up and tell me different lol
Joel is incredible. 1 rack 2 floor toms 1 cowbell. When a drummers decides to use 1 rack and 2 floors u know you got to know your way around the kit.
I love his phrasing and the pockets he creates for latin grooves...Yeah Joel..Love you bro...
These guys a MUSICALLY DANGEROUS. J.R. laid down one funky-ass pattern in the beginning. Of course Scott Ambush...Well, you know the rest. Jay Beck I always enjoyed hearing him play. The whole fuckin' band is a Gang Of Funksters that escaped from Funk Town- NEVER TO BE CAUGHT.
having taken the time to view your playing I think your comment is perhaps a little . . . hmmmm, I don't know what. Perhaps a little more feel is what you need and less gadgets. try a guitar amp and a cable.
There was only one part in th drum solo that it seems to be lost in time... it does not matter they are a great band, but I prefer Oskar Cartaya on bass
I wrote he looks like Dr. Phil. It doesn't have anything to do with him lacking talents. I don't know why he's on tv, which I didn't say anything about. I don't understand your last sentence(s?), but if you're trying to say that educated doctors have sublime music taste, then I couldn't disagree more - where's the connection, holmes?
@robertvdheide I don't think that is what Dr. Phil really wants, do you? It would seem stupid of him to form a tv-show where people come in and cry to form a career as a drummer, wouldn't you say so? Doctors listen to good music you say? So with years and years of medicine studies comes great music taste? I'll keep that in mind next time I'm going to the doctor to get the zit removed from my arse. You're the zit.
Listen to the original recorded version. The bass from Cartaya and Marc Quiñones percussion made a big difference. This version is good but simply there is now authentic Latin Grrove.
Does anyone else notice a bit of Mambo Salsa Jazz, as the intro, then at 2:18 a very seductive Pink Panther in the guitar solos with some salsa keyboards? A very interesting blend.
As someone once posted over at magic island....I would love to see the music charts on THIS one.....what a tight band...the Led Zeppelin of jazz, in that any music is fair game insofar as influencing this bands' jazz!

@17drumhead
SO true.. and as I said elsewhere:
Dave is technically a better man, and is a lot more aware of what he is doing.
BUT Joel is in my opinion a way better groover.. his swing is immense!
looking for teacher?.. take Dave... looking for groove and "the will to play the sh** out of these drums": call Joel.
Joel does not care if he makes small mistakes.. it's all music.. if Dave makes a mistake it seems he almost want's to kill himself
Perfection is not the goal.. MUSIC is

@korglove
Joel And Dave are acutally good friends and studied together :-)
They also developed their setup with the second floor tom together.. actually because they also studied "The New Breed" together with Gary Chester.
As Joel told med " we would often jam in crazy time signatures, and at the end Dave always won"
Bottom line:
Dave is technically a better man, and is a lot more aware of what he is doing.
BUT Joel is in my opinion a way better groover.. his swing and pocket is immense!
