Freemasonry is not a religion. Its virtues are mostly founded in Scripture, but nobody I know stopped being whatever to worship solely at their Blue Lodge. I'm a Catholic (don't ask-don't tell!) & Freemasonry doesn't interfere.

The York Rite offers 12 degrees, in the Scottish Rite there are 32 instructive degrees, & the 33rd degree is strictly honorary -bestowed by election on brothers for exemplary service to the fraternity and community. I entered the Scottish Rite & have received the 4th-32nd degrees. I'll probably take the York Rite degrees as well when I get the time. After that, I'll join the Shriners so I can drive miniature cars.

@curt4187 : Just so you know, while the York & Scottish Rite, Shriners & other appendant organizations are all Masonic, they are independent of each other. None have any control over the others. The Scottish Rite itself is divided into a Northern & Southern jurisdiction, with totally separate leadership. Even the names & presentation of the degrees differ. Each state has it's own Grand Lodge governing their Blue Lodges, & the degree rituals differ between them. Freemasonry is not monolithic.

Well it is, from what I've gathered, a compromise deemed necessary to stay regular, but I see the Moderns as a step in the right direction for social progress. To join the Knight Templar order, which is an appendent body to Freemasonry, in other words an organisation that a Freemason may joing. You have to be a Master Mason and a Christian. In fact, you have to vow to defend the christian faith.

There could be other organisations calling themselves Knights Templar, but they are not related to Freemasonry in any way.

Here's a little test from a Freemason (me) to determine whether Freemasonry is a secret society: Look up Masonic Lodges in the phone book and you will find the listings. Try that with Skull and Bones. Masonic Lodges are marked clearly, the Skull and Bones building is not. Freemasonry is not a secret society and Skull and Bones is. You can go to any Lodge website and see the names and photos of members. Try that with S and B.

to be one, ask one. The Grand Lodge in my state holds twice a year 'Square and Compass Day' or open houses across the state. Inviting the general public to come in and see for themselves what Freemasonry is all about. Not much secret society if advertising on both tv and radio now is it?
