@pandaphil After Denethor's wife died a few years ago Faramir was born, he became isolated and less lover to both sons. Faramir unlike Boromir was.. (as denethor states both in the books and movies) "a wizard's pupil" because Faramir would rather listen to Gandalf's tales of dragons and middle earth then staying on his studies. Boromir "was always the solider, he just like his father stubborn even. But Strong." Denethor liked boromir cause he was the soldier, and more like him.
@pandaphil Well as you can see in this scene and it is talked about in ROTK, Boromir always excelled in his military studies and commanding while Faramir was not as successful. Denethor then looked down to Faramir seeing that he wasn't of much use to hold position of power while Boromir was.
@WeirdPianoGuy I suggest you watch the whole video. You'd find that this was only showing what Faramir remembered before Boromir went to Rivendell for the meeting.
boromir probably wouldn't be as perfect a king as he thought he would be if he survived the war, but with his motivational speech i just heard, he would have made a badass general "general boromir" sounds awesome
I hate that they cut this from the normal release... It kind of explains why Boromir REALLY wanted the ring, how his father poisoned his mind with delusions of needing the ring in Gondor and that Boromir really thought he was acting in the best interests of Middle Earth as a result. I think it makes his death more tragic. He is my favorite character from the Fellowship of the Ring.
Completely agreed. Peter Jackson really blundered big time when he cut this scene. Actually, he kinda faltered when he got to the third movie - I could see that it was not as tightly done as it had been with the first movie. Probably time constraints, but as a result Gondor REALLY suffers in the trilogy, and all the characters associated with it.
@magnieto1 Yeah, and it shows that Boromir is actually a good man. Like you said, his father poisoned his mind with delusions of needing the ring, which is why Boromir seems like a douch at times, and the ring controlling him.
Denathor is a jerk, clearly. But John Noble, who plays him, is a legend. Just check him out in Fringe - he plays at least two versions of his character, and all you have to do is glimpse him, for a seconf, just a headshot in front of a white wall, to know which version he is playing. AMAZING actor.
@autumnleaf50 I agree but, I also remember them talking about how Denethor had gotten ahold of a palantir, and for some reason thought he could use it to spy on Sauron, naturally Sauron saw right through this, and had great fun messing with Denethor's mind. Therefore, by this time, Denethor's mind was not really his own.
Dr.Bishop not so nice father here too haha

Faramir's actor said Faramir had a natrual resistance to the ring's corruption like Aragon, so he would have survivevd most likely.
TheSephiroth5 1 month ago
You know there may be a chance that if Faramir did go instead of Boromir he could've returned and Boromir might've still held Osgiliath.
