I'm sure that if the Americans thought they could get away with it, they would try and claim that they saved us from Napoleon! They already think they saved us from the Kaiser and Hitler, next will probably be Napoleon and Phillip of Spain.

@dezboss there wasn't really anything wrong with Kaiser Wlhem. WWI was just another European War, st apart cause of all the new tech that turned the battlefields into complete slaughterhouses. Hitler was the evily demented one.

@nooo8oooo The Kaiser may not have been evil, but he certainly did more than his share of stare of starting the war and he did play a role regarding Germany's conduct in the war. But I do agree he is behind Stalin, Hitler and Napoleon.

@nooo8oooo You're right, but Hitler wasn't evil. He was just slightly mentally ill. He wasn't the one who thought up the evil plans they are remember for. He would get his advisors, ask them for something unspecific, such as 'I want the jews gone', and they would compete to be his number 2. It was Himmler who suggested killing them. Hitler was just a slightly insane arrogant orator, surronded by even more insane men.

America didn't have much to do with world history until the 20th century, so I'm not suprised lots of Americans try to claim credit for stuff they never did. Or make it better than what they did do. It's called small nation syndrome :-)

@SIzemore3434 I am simply stating a fact. If it was not for the United States Hitler would have invaded England and eventually won, but no 200,000 American soldiers died so that Europe could be free. @dezboss Honestly,it's admirable that you have national pride, but youre no better than an American for making that accusation.The United States did save the British and French in WWI because the nations were bankrupt,and now most historians assert that the Zimmerman telegram was a British plot.In WWII it was a combined effort of all Allied forces of the world,the Soviet Union,British,French,Polish,an­d United States,who made a major contribution to the war effort,but were not the deciding factor

@ClassicRockr86 I acknowledge that without the US, neither of the world wars would have been won in the end. But if Britain had let herself be invaded, where would the Americans have based their troops in order to finish the war off? You couldn't have liberated us from across the Atlantic.

Without the US, neither war would have been won in the end. But saying that we were 'saved' is insulting the memory of those who did fight to keep us free from the Germans.

@dezboss Okay, nw that is a sentiment I can agree with, I just was also insulted in the same way, in that the Americans who did not come to fight gave it their all and I was making sure their sacrifice was recognized. But I definitely agree with your perspective as well, using the term "saved" almost makes it seem as if any effort mounted by the British was insignificant and served no purpose, which is an absolutely disrespectful and unfounded concept.

@ClassicRockr86 Any reading of Churchill's wartime speeches will acknowledge just how vital American intervention was. Even if Britain hadn't become fully committed against Japan in 1941 after Pearl Harbour (which we also wouldn't have done on our own), we still wouldn't have won against Nazi Germany in the long run. The fighting would have just gone on and on probably until stalemate was declared. As you said, it was a huge combined effort.

@ClassicRockr86 But, there is a reason that 1940 has been called our country's 'finest hour'. Had Britain not stood alone in 1940 and 1941, I think the course of Europe's history would have been very different. Americans, like Britons, should be massively proud of what they achieved in both world wars. We were certainly helped and aided, saved is another matter.

@masterhalco I have said in other posts that neither war would have been won had it not been for eventual US intervention and aid.

But I am making the point that it is nothing more than insulting to say that we were 'saved'. Aided and helped yes, but saved would suggest we were just about to lose and rescued at the last minute. We kept ourselves free from Nazi invasion in 1940. Had we not, history would have been massively different.
