@TwinBullet I've noticed that, too. I was a Spanish major in college, and I had a professor from Spain. He was a young guy (in his 20's) who had just came to America for the first time the previous semester. One day in class the non-natives were having a debate over which is a better term to use: Hispanic or Latino. Ignacio (my professor) had no idea what we were talking about. PPL in the class also didn't think that he "looked Hispanic."
Continued...I don't understand how there can be Latinos that consider themselves a race. I mean, if I can travel to a Spanish-speaking country and see that it's obviously not true, I don't understand what their deals are.
@TwinBullet Firstly, I do, in fact, get your point. I just don't think it's that simple. I think the reason minorities cling to their heritage is because to be American doesn't really mean anything. To the vast majority of people, American is white, which is why only we minorities use terms like African-American or Asian-American. Unless a white person is like Italian or Jewish, they don't really have much culture, which is why they borrow from we minorities. :-)
@TwinBullet I am making sense. Minorities, especially Asians and Latinos have strong ties to their language and culture--no matter what country they are born in. If you ask a Latino, for instance, what they are, the vast majority of the time, they will say I'm Mexican, Cuban, Dominican, and so on--even if they are legal and born here because they have pride for their heritage. That's why I said Laz is a black Cuban-American. He speaks fluent Spanish & visits Cuba & has family there.
@TwinBullet I was just making a clarification. You said that he isn't Cuban, but the truth is that he is a black Cuban-American. That's why I mentioned all the just about ethnic background vs. race and nationality. Saying that Laz isn't Cuban is like saying that Jennifer Lopez or Marc Anthony aren't Puerto Rican. They are. They are just mixed-raced, Puerto Rican-Americans. A Chinese-American would never say that they aren't Chinese just because they were born in America.
@TwinBullet Black is his race. Cuban is his ethnic background. American is his nationality. Latino/Hispanic is an ethnic group, not a race. It's like this. Even though the vast majority of Latinos are mixed-raced, they come in all races. It's like being American. Even though the vast majority of Americans are white, we come in all races and come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.
This man is the total package...smart, educated, fine as hell, successful...I could only hope he has the character to be a great father and man in a marriage.
@TwinBullet i say that b/c he is cuban american. i know dark cuban people who consider them selves cuban americans not african americans. i think it is unique though
