i absolutely loved this album back in the 80's and every time i hear it still it wows me! amazing songs. this lyric blows me away...We fight through the night for freedom as it fades
Into a jail where we fail everytime we make a break
But there's a river of love that runs through all time
This song is beautifully written and beautifully performed. So emotional and vulnerable in a reserved way. I've always been a huge fan of Leslie/Sam and T-Bone.
wow!! Even 21 years ago, she had tremendous presence. Her Garbo-esque
demeanor is riveting. And when she sings that line- "there's a river of love that runs through all time" with such a serious look( with that nearly unbearable pause, like she was close to losing it) ..whew.. pretty heady Stuff... thanks for posting. What a great & unique talent.
I saw her perform at a similar venue in Toronto -- at the Rivoli -- in late February 1989. Her guitarist was none other than the late Mark Heard. (That's not Mark in this video, is it? It doesn't look like him.)
I have her "last" album from when she was still Leslie Philips - and I had forgotten about this album --- this song haunts me and I was sad to see her leave "Christian" music world - our loss...good to see her art on YouTube...
Carolyn Arends covered this on her 'Travelers' CD. There's a lot of great songs that deal with issues of faith that don't mention God. Infact The Book of Esther doesn't mention Him yet He's all over the book!
Sam Phillips. Gosh, what to say. her music has touched me since i was "younger"; have now followed her career & enjoyed her music for almost 30 yrs & like her, each song is timeless.

River of Love was written and recorded by none other than T-Bone Burnett. If you enjoy this version, as do I, check his out.

Wow this is a very different Sam Philips. Far from the new wave madonna wannabe she was on 'another saturday nite.'Good she got her own voice.

A song like this would have never been accepted when she was in the "christan Music" areana. it doesn't mention anything about god.
But the song is about life and truth and that is what matters.

It doesn't mention anything about God? Really? Just what do you think the "river of love that runs through all time" is?

That's a good point and I hadn't thought about it.
