they are the ruling deities of the nine planets - Surya dev (the sun god) being the centre and controller of the planets

Chandra=Moon

Mangal=Mars

Shani Dev=Saturn

Briaspati=Jupiter

Bhud=Mercery...not to confused with Bhuddha..one of Lord Vishnu's avatars

Sukra=Venus

Rahu and Ketu=Lunar nodes...they were asuras but Rahu drank divine nectar (Amrita) and thus, Vishnu, decapitated him..so Rahu is Rahu and Ketu...Rahu has serpent head, Ketu is the tail.
