The first known traffic signal appeared in London in 1868 near the Houses of Parliament. Designed by JP Knight, it featured two semaphore arms and two gas lamps. The earliest electric traffic lights include Lester Wire's two-color version set up in Salt Lake City circa 1912, James Hoge's system (US patent #1,251,666) installed in Cleveland by the American Traffic Signal Company in 1914 and others as well. i`ve tried to tell people that morgan`s traffic signal had very little or no influence on the evolution of the modern traffic light,but disinformation this entrenched is hard to counter.And when mainstream media networks like the history channel get involved in promoting the mythology,it gets even harder to convince people of the truth.Potts 4-way is probably closest to the modern traffic signal,and it appeared 3 years before the morgan device.

Imagine what life would be like without Garrett Morgan's Invention?!?!??? There were nearly SIXTY patents for traffic signal devices before Morgan patented his!! Nearly two-dozen of which were automated! Morgan's "semaphone" was a MANUAL, CRANK-TURNED device! It was obsolete before it even got to the patent office! Furthermore, his semaphore was never even USED!!!!! The precursor to the modern traffic light was already in use for YEARS before this!

Garrett Morgan did NOT invent the traffic signal. His signal did not use colored lights. Colored lights were used on traffic signals starting in 1912. Morgan's signal was invented in 1923, and when GE bought the patent, GE NEVER produced Morgan's signal.
