To those say that Nell was dimwitted - she wasn't. Her wit was more subtle, and uncharacteristic of the aristocracy of that time. She was beloved by the people once word of her affair with the king came out. There's a recount of her traveling and people booing over her because they thought that she was her rival lover - who was from Versailles. She promptly tells the crowd she is "the Protestant whore."

Lady Castlemaine was hated - and even called "the curse of the nation" (and that's a direct quote). Nell Gwynn is considered a folk heroine, lauded for her rags to riches story and considered an "embodiment of the Restoration period."

While Charles in this show was a mild-mannered man, he still thought he had divine right, and thus those in his circle rotated around his every whim. And Lady Castlemaine in here is at her basic form, true to real life. He probably cared for her, but she never loved him. She schemed, plotted, and hopped around with every other man in court, always looking for more. And Charles finally recognized it.

But just so you know - Charles was actually never married before he got involved with Castlemaine. This is dramatics adapted for the show. IF he was previously married, then his illegit son with the other woman, Northumberland would have probably become King because he was a protestant. That would have saved a whole lot of grief for him.

I'm not crazy about the Nell character in this production....I don't know, but she just seems soooo common .....The real Nell Gwynn was cockney & poor, but everyone talked about how brilliant , bright,& witty she was....on stage & off. In this production,she just seems common & not too bright,nothing special,really.Can't see what a king would admire. To me, she seems like the weakest member of a really talented cast....
