so excited that i already bought a garmin gps LOL!
@Renaud596 sorry bout that, im just disappointed to see that the crv failed this test.. planning on getting the 2012 crv AWD... i guess il look around first...
@s8rider I hear that some of the best AWD systems are the old BMW, Audi, and Acura systems. I've heard that the late mitsubishi AWD before the evo10 was kind of crappy and has loads of torque steer. Good luck!
@Renaud596 Well, yes and no... I have a subaru sti, you can lock the diff so it gets equal power to the front and rear making it 4wd... Or you can de-select this and fully adjust how much power you want in the front/rear, this is called a DCCD menu, but it's only available on the STI :)
@alabaska182 Well I could do this on my old audi from the 80's, but this still isn't really 4wheel drive still. Your computer will still decide which wheels to send power to to maintain traction in most situations. I'm not well versed in Subaru's newer designs, but almost all of their all-wheel drive systems in the past have had a viscous coupling in the center differential to transfer the power. Audi has a secondary gearbox that can transfer most of the power to any combination of the wheels
I'm not saying Subaru doesn't have a good 4 wheel drive system, but you're wrong about the Passat. It does not have a permanent 4 wheel drive system, but rather a Haldex system which distributes power to the rear wheels when needed, and not much power either (last I've heard it was 15%).
Run the test with an Audi A6 Allroad, and I can almost guaranty a similar or better result then the Legacy.
I'm glad I watched this. I was going to get a Toyota rav 4, but if Toyota can't make a vehicle that can't even pass This simple lab setting, then what good would it do me to have it in 20 inches of snow?
I enjoy the fact that this video is from a Subaru dealer and they failed to test Audi, Volvo, Mercedes, and BMW, four of the European powerhouses known for their all-wheel drive
@Renaud596 i agree with you, id really like to see this test done with some of these reputable AWD systems, however i suppose that some of these European counter parts are maybe not really competitors with subaru considering some of the price differences
@qwerty1274 I suppose I'd have to agree with you there. Just another example of the "You get what you pay for" postulate in action. I think it'd be sweet to see an older BMW or Audi up on that tester though, as those are starting to become very affordable
I understand that Subarus have a symetrical drivetrain and the "box engine" all the dealers talk about. But I am a very expirenced ASE certified Technician and Auto Service technology Instructor, and it really upsets me you mention othing of the drawback to that engine design and you have NO idea what you are talking about in this video. Haha, Subaru tries do blaim "asymmetrical drivetrains" as the reason that some competitors fail this test. It has nothing to do with that. Experiment is good. But u should have shown all the 4 wheels at the same time. We cannot see what trap is put in front of the back wheels of all other cars which do not climb. After all u r a subaru dealer.
May I just point out a simple fact many of you may have learned in primary school?
Symmetrical means all sides are equal from a given point. Example: an equilateral triangle, a square etc. Therefore, Subaru cannot have a symmetrical drivetrain with the drivetrain in the front of the car..... That puts the rear wheels further from the drivetrain than the front.
Subaru has 1 'symmetrical' drivetrain. Their base 50/50 bevel gear center differential
Subaru has 3 asymmetrical drivetrains. The current WRX STI uses a 41/59 planetary (old one was 35/65). The 5 speed automatic uses a 45/55 double pinion center differential.
The Crappy 4 speeds & Lineartronic CVT use front wheel drive with a power take off clutch 100/0.
@SparkDischarge - the symmetry of the system does not the speak of power ratio split. The power ratio is always split front and back, why would you want power always in the front or rear, it affect driving and control. Impreza (manual) are typically 55/45. But the power can shift where ever it is most useful. The Subaru's automatics, are typically 70/30 under normal driving conditions, but the same applies, the power will go where every it is most useful. Watch the video again and see.
Hmmm...more than Symmetrical or Asymmetrical, I think it is more about the use of a LSD....
Check the new evaluations on 4motion and Torsen systems, with eLSD, and the SH-AWD....Subaru is still really good at AWD, but it seems it will have a serious contender very soon.
why is it that people always say that audi invented awd when they didnt come with it untill 1980? subaru had all wheel drive in 73, and jeep had quadratrack in 74.
@NeonKizen lol its just a glorified peice of shit i never seen a dirty audi yet lol vw porche and audi all the same company all basic parts owned and operated by crappy vw i fucking dont like german cars atleast not those mercedes is nice
That is not correct. Any vehicle that can lock the centre diff but has open diffs front and rear is no more than a 2wd in rough conditions. Using your theory, only vehicles with locked front, centre and rear can be classed as 4wd. Maybe you need to re-word your statement or, just maybe, you have no idea about what you are talking.
There is no such thing as "full time 4WD", like in the highlander. I don't care what anyone days, when you introduce a center differential (which allows the front to rear slippage of power) it becomes AWD. 4WD is when there is no center differential, and 100% of the power goes front and rear. There is no transfer of power front to back. Still, when it comes to AWD, Subaru doesn't mess around. The reason they have it better than others is because they simply have more AWD systems on the road.
@rctheil Only fucktards and insecure people drive 4x4 vehicules and suvs they have no driving skills whatsoever and cant even fucking change a tire.
On solid ground a front wheel drive will go anywhere your shitbox suv or 4x4 does, wich you dont need in the first place anyway its all marketing a money grab from dumb people that think there gods creation cause they drive an all wheel drive vehicule most people dont need that a good set of snow tires and driving skills work wonders some brains to
look at how much slower he is revving the subaru when its on ice vs the other cars. the honda wouldnt transmit power because the turd had the peddle to the medal, so since the car registered the wheel at moving more than 63kph or whatever the number is, it prevents the car from transfering power to avoid smashing gears.
Seems that the "laboratory tests" were tailored to make the Subaru come out on top. As an exercise for the student, as you have explained why power transfer is good in certain amounts, perhaps you could explain why it is NOT good in certain amounts.
@gravesfiend138 Im sure you mdx is better at acceleration. Also your jeep has way more clearance because its lifted and probably has more aggressive tires than the mdx so its not really a fair comparison.
@GIB990099 actually my jeep is quicker. the mdx has a better top speed, but its not too often i feel like going that fast unless im at a track anyway. and they actually have the same tires, the ones on the jeep are just bigger.
symmetrical drive train....... Sounds like a 9 min subaru commercial. My truck with locking diffs can do the same thing, and I dont waste gas powering all 4 wheels on bone dry roads as I can actually take it out of 4wd when not needed.
@reddot44, un lock the center diff when your done useing it, simple. the nissan armada, land rover disco, and several others have a locking center diff so you can have both awd or 4wd when things get ulgy.
Say what you will, Subaru Rocks!! This is a very impressive test, it OBVIOUSLY shows that Subaru is superior to the other cars when it comes to traction.
Unbiased? Since it is posted by a Subaru dealership, it's hard to believe.
It would be easy to fake these tests by setting the handbrake on the other vehicles. Or just modulating the accelerator and turning the wheel to simulate "traction control intervention." I seriously doubt the Honda and Toyota results.
While I respect Subaru's AWD system, I need to see this in person to believe that Subaru and VW are the only systems that can climb that ramp. And what about Audi Quattro?
How about following the manufacturers instructions to use the AWD systems. you know, like turning traction control off on the CR-V. the issue here isn't that there's no power to the rear wheels, it's that the Traction control is interfering too much and applying breaking force.
If both front weels are on ice... and they are not even contributing to the car`s traction capacity how can we talk about torque steer? Consider a tank, if you take the tracks of , will it be able to steer ?!?! The reason why the car turns is not the asymetrical drivetrain layout, it`s because of that one wheel that has traction meanwhile the others spin (similar to how the ESP works).
VW is a German car... and who cares if Japs took the technology. Obviously they made it better for half the price... sooo if you want to overpay... you can't argue with results
Search Bosch ESP, there's an excellent review that Top Gear did, demonstrating that traction control will climb actual ice at a 10% grade. There's something misleading about this demonstration, perhaps it's the use of rollers rather than a real world driving surface such as ice, mud or gravel.
I knew it, subaru is still the best, the KING OF ALL WHEEL DRIVE!!! They hav been making AWD for 40 years. All the rest of AWD car manufacturers are just pretenders. SUBARU SYMETRICAL AWD FTW!!!
I think they turned off the AWD and TC on Honda and Toyota. It is not hard to simulate traction control, just feather the throttle a little bit and the tire will spin. The front end of the Toyota was moving because the driver was moving the steering wheel 4:36 just focus on his hands.
If the legacy has a symmetrical drive system... then why haven't you guys tested out the Audi S4 2001.... it's symmetrical as well, also about the VW Passat...didn't that version have esp, or another selectable on off traction control system just as the Audi S4 does. Which would mean that if could have possibly climbed that "icy hill" if esp was on. The esp actually locks any and all wheels that it senses slipping. my .02
Maybe you guys can test that out. bet it'll bring some good reviews

have you seen the rear diff in a honda CRV? well i wouldnt put alot of power to it.... u can shake it with ur bare hands. its not mounted to the car very well. imagine what all that torque to the rear end? it would break that diff right out of its mounts
"This is an extreme test: The bulk of the vehicle weight is at the rear. The vehicle must overcome this weight to move the vehicle forward." LOL! that's why you're in sales...
@superamerica1981 Quattro shares very little with 4motion. They are completely distinct solutions. I cannot verify your claim for asymmetry, however. You could be correct but it would depend on the exact model. For example the Q5 engine is longitudinally mounted and would provide a symmetric weight distribution. Also, while the video tried to make it an issue, the fact is torque steer has no impact on traction in snow. It's really a non-issue.
@dorkytwo some companies bring out the new year model early. matter of fact between june and september they will come out with the following year model
My buddy has a subaru, during the last snow storm we were messing around in about three inchs of snow. I drive a Jeep wrangler with deep lugged off road tires. The subaru out performed my jeep. I was surprised. We drove out to the mountains where the snow was deeper, eventually my jeep moved ahead because his car was bottoming out. I would say in about five inchs of snow or less, you can't beat the subaru.
DUDE SUBARU IS A KING OF ALL WHEEL DRIVE!!! Dont believe me? rent one and push the shit out in turns in snow / ice/rain, EVEn BMW DOESNT HANDLE HALF AS GOOD!!
really great video showing that other companies that claim AWD do not actually have it, but.... where is Audi's Quattro??? they created AWD they should be in this test.
Too much trouble for CRAPPY SUBARUS!!! GET REAL CLOWNS! Internet is full with engineering info that proves ALLROUND TECHOLOGICAL SUPERIORITY of the Germans.
@miikathebest Manufactures provide very little about there 4wd system. this is also a base model forester vs the top of the line crv. There forester also has the xs model with a limited slip rear end or the test the forester xt front and rear lsd and a turbo charger. The honda crv ex is the top of the line crx. i dont think the video was old when it was posted. even if you test the "new" awd cars the forester still s***s on all of them!
@kolesidisgiannis looks like it's not about the kind of transmission, but the transmission's layout...
Suburau cars has longitudinal motor and transmission, and it makes the a better distribution of torque between both axes, consequently it's able to climb the platform easily
If weight distribuition is the factor for the 1 wheel traction, why they didn't test like for like in the case of the 4Motion Passat Variant vs. Legacy sedan. The test should be done the 4Motion Passat Variant vs. Subaru Forester and the 4Mortion Passat sedan vs. Subary Legacy sedan. And why there is no test on the quattro on the A6, A8 which is symmetrical too?
Conclusion... forget Honda and Toyota. Subaro AWD and VW group AWD are equally good in normal road conditions.
@vetex007 I concur. As an Impreza owner, I would say no other AWD system is stacks up performance wise real world or on the track as the VW/Audi and Subaru.
All Subaru's are symmetrical engine layout. Which is why i'm sad they didn't test something like the A6. The test seemed a little weighted in a dollar per dollar category versus performance.
this is only valid if the cars were on an uphill. If the cars were on level ground or on a downhill I'm pretty sure that the one wheel could move most if not all the other cars.
Nice vid :) One thing about Subaru: with automatic tranny, Subaru uses multi-plate, electronically controlled clutch to distribute torque between the axles. With the manual transmission, there is center differential instead of clutch, so power distribution should be even better and more smooth (no lag before climbing). About torque-steer: the other reason of this "wiggling" can be traction control (ESP, whatever the name) trying to move the car by braking selectively left or right front wheel.
@tandaman538 so what good is it then? so its only good if your not going up a hill FANTASTIC ill remember to not go up bad condition hills to say my home, if im driving a VW. Subaru doesnt even claim that one wheel will make it but it does. so if VW wants to make a claim or support a design theve made then they should have something that outperforms others that dont have this claim. but its clearly doesnt.
@OfficerSheepDog well i could see it if VW said one wheel can pull the car on ice up a hill then i would say wtf but they diden't. Thats like you saying i can skate 5 km/h, can you do it up hill, NO, and im pretty sure you dont go up a hill that is pure ice, and if you do then dont get a VW or any other car because it prob wont make it, just walk with spiked shoes
But one tire is on full traction the others are on "ICE"
The problem is that No matter what wheel has traction, if its ONLY one, then it will not move the car because VW cant give enough power to the 1wheel, where Subs can.
My rant was if VW wants to make a claim like one wheel can move the car then it should account for normal condition like a slight incline. Ignore Ice, thats for the other 3 wheels its the wheel WITH traction thats the problem
@OfficerSheepDog ok well whatever, it doesn't matter to me i think its cause i drive a Quattro Audi and my mom drives a VW i tend to stick up for them but every car has its faults
I'm on my second Forester and they work extremely well in real-world inclement weather driving. I've also owned 5 other serious off road 4x4's and would naturally choose them four stumping jumping, but the Forester was better on snow covered surface streets. You could get my trucks to perform well but generally needed to add several hundred pounds in back. The Forester's independent suspension along with there drive system is fantastic in my personal experience.
Now it is true that the symetrical Drivetrain is an advantage. And in my opinion, if you want a decent All wheel Drive, then the engine ist built in Straight and not side to side... also the Gearbox has the differential for the front axle built inside its housing and not having a driveshaft running to a seperate front differential.
And only two manufacturers have got that right. Audi and Subaru
This is why we dont see quattro because its the same....
notice how the user name is subaruofdallas and for the most part they talked only about subarus being better and that most of the cars they used didnt work... i wonder why, u know what this is, this is u being a bias son of a bitch
we recently performed a multi AWD / 4WD testing @ Lancelin West Australia. Petrol (p) & Diesel (d) vehicals. Toyota Landcruiser 09, (p & d) Toyota Prado 09 (p) Nissan Patrol 09 (p), Mitsubishi Outlander 09 (p), Honda CRV 09 (p), Jeep Cher 09 (p) Subaru Forester 09 (p). Of all the tests performed, the Subaru Forester travelled further in sand, higher up sand incline tests without tyre deflation. Every single other vehicle mentioned could not match the Subaru even with deflated tires at 15 psi.
when he splits the screen to show us the foot on the accelerator the camera moves as if someone was holding it would have been one a mount but then it wouldn't have moved around so much sitting in the car on a mounting, and the Honda can easily make it up the ramp, Subaru made these tests lets see what happens if Honda does it eh? and BTW if you are getting a 4WD car get a descent fucking car then! Mitsubishi Pajero ( Shogun ), Land Cruiser, Land Rover, Range Rover, not a fucking city car!!
in my opinion the Toyota Corolla 1990 Diesel 2.0c Limited edition is the best AWD car ever,,i have tried it and u won't beleve but this car driveble through those terririons where a REAL 4WD jeeps cant easyly get!! really man it can't stuck any where!!
How about you test a Jeep, something that will smack all of these on any terrain. Also automakers keeping it a secret isn't true, Jeep makes there system very clear. 100% of power can be applied to a single wheel if it has traction, or each wheel can be braked to prevent slipping, low range, lock the diff's together, or power is transferred based on a coupler, mechanically or electrical. Normally power is split 50/50, if something slips more power is transferred to axle with traction then wheel
Why no American made AWD systems in this test? Both Ford's and GM's system would pass with flying colors. GM's Haldex (which is publicized BTW, Google for GM Haldex and you'll find a LOT of info.) I've driven GM's Haldex system in many more slippery situations than this test. All of them with great success.
The drivers manual of the cr-v specifically states that should your vehicle not be able to gain to gain traction, you should turn the vsa off using the "VSA Off" button to the left of the steering wheel. Also, Honda has a page on their webste that tells how the crv's real-time 4wd system operates. It operates via hydraulic pumps that send power to the rear wheels within 1/4 of a turn of a slipping front wheel. The VW claim was that the car will move, not that it will climb. I smell some bias....
if the driver had to switch it to 4wd then its not an AWD system like honda apparently *as far as i can tell by whats said in the video* claims it is that would be a 4wd system and if they were testing that then they could have slapped a old toyota pickup 4x4 on the ramps and put it in 4 low and it would climb right up..
Honda is "NOT" a brand to choose when it comes to 4WD vehicles. Toyota made famous with their Land Cruisers & 4Runners but did not apply that concept to their RAV's. Mitsubishi with their Pajero's, Delica's & Lancer EVO and recently Outlanders.
For this size I will pick Subaru and Outlander AWD technology.
@olverafam I own a 2009 SE AWD myself and I agree with you. That AWD system is developed for their EVO's for Rally Racing and I like the idea that you can actually control the trim of this AWD system versus have the system do it for you. I have a 2006 CRV AWD too but I like the Outlander better, even in ride quality.
This test/challenge would impressed me if camera show all 4 wheels on the all car.s/SUV.and have different drivers and different angles of the camera....Conspiracy?..Hmmmm and again this is advertisement for Subaru. Maybe some 1 gave a Subaru a push to make like it can climb.

@djwickid28 Symmetry would mean identical. {They more/less have lateral symmetry}
How do you get 25/25/25/25 torque/power split?
You split evenly at the center differential, then you split evenly at each axle differential.
Subaru manual transmissions are closest to that.

Coyote483 9 months ago
That is not correct. Any vehicle that can lock the centre diff but has open diffs front and rear is no more than a 2wd in rough conditions. Using your theory, only vehicles with locked front, centre and rear can be classed as 4wd. Maybe you need to re-word your statement or, just maybe, you have no idea about what you are talking.
burblebak 9 months ago
There is no such thing as "full time 4WD", like in the highlander. I don't care what anyone days, when you introduce a center differential (which allows the front to rear slippage of power) it becomes AWD. 4WD is when there is no center differential, and 100% of the power goes front and rear. There is no transfer of power front to back. Still, when it comes to AWD, Subaru doesn't mess around. The reason they have it better than others is because they simply have more AWD systems on the road.
rctheil 9 months ago
@rctheil Only fucktards and insecure people drive 4x4 vehicules and suvs they have no driving skills whatsoever and cant even fucking change a tire.
On solid ground a front wheel drive will go anywhere your shitbox suv or 4x4 does, wich you dont need in the first place anyway its all marketing a money grab from dumb people that think there gods creation cause they drive an all wheel drive vehicule most people dont need that a good set of snow tires and driving skills work wonders some brains to
Coyote483 9 months ago
look at how much slower he is revving the subaru when its on ice vs the other cars. the honda wouldnt transmit power because the turd had the peddle to the medal, so since the car registered the wheel at moving more than 63kph or whatever the number is, it prevents the car from transfering power to avoid smashing gears.

gravesfiend138 10 months ago
@gravesfiend138 Im sure you mdx is better at acceleration. Also your jeep has way more clearance because its lifted and probably has more aggressive tires than the mdx so its not really a fair comparison.
GIB990099 7 months ago
@GIB990099 actually my jeep is quicker. the mdx has a better top speed, but its not too often i feel like going that fast unless im at a track anyway. and they actually have the same tires, the ones on the jeep are just bigger.

Simply put, Subaru is the BEST!!
matt888444 10 months ago
And what about Audi Quattro?
hybr1dmyl 10 months ago
wait, I'm confused, where was the audi in their test, they set the standard 20+ years ago, why not test against them?
cmbullit 11 months ago

Search Bosch ESP, there's an excellent review that Top Gear did, demonstrating that traction control will climb actual ice at a 10% grade. There's something misleading about this demonstration, perhaps it's the use of rollers rather than a real world driving surface such as ice, mud or gravel.

@kolesidisgiannis looks like it's not about the kind of transmission, but the transmission's layout...
Suburau cars has longitudinal motor and transmission, and it makes the a better distribution of torque between both axes, consequently it's able to climb the platform easily
GuilhermeGoto 1 year ago
If weight distribuition is the factor for the 1 wheel traction, why they didn't test like for like in the case of the 4Motion Passat Variant vs. Legacy sedan. The test should be done the 4Motion Passat Variant vs. Subaru Forester and the 4Mortion Passat sedan vs. Subary Legacy sedan. And why there is no test on the quattro on the A6, A8 which is symmetrical too?
Conclusion... forget Honda and Toyota. Subaro AWD and VW group AWD are equally good in normal road conditions.
vetex007 1 year ago
@vetex007 I concur. As an Impreza owner, I would say no other AWD system is stacks up performance wise real world or on the track as the VW/Audi and Subaru.
All Subaru's are symmetrical engine layout. Which is why i'm sad they didn't test something like the A6. The test seemed a little weighted in a dollar per dollar category versus performance.
This video is great, however.

About torque-steer: the other reason of this "wiggling" can be traction control (ESP, whatever the name) trying to move the car by braking selectively left or right front wheel.

tandaman538 1 year ago
@tandaman538 so what good is it then? so its only good if your not going up a hill FANTASTIC ill remember to not go up bad condition hills to say my home, if im driving a VW. Subaru doesnt even claim that one wheel will make it but it does. so if VW wants to make a claim or support a design theve made then they should have something that outperforms others that dont have this claim. but its clearly doesnt.
OfficerSheepDog 1 year ago
@OfficerSheepDog well i could see it if VW said one wheel can pull the car on ice up a hill then i would say wtf but they diden't. Thats like you saying i can skate 5 km/h, can you do it up hill, NO, and im pretty sure you dont go up a hill that is pure ice, and if you do then dont get a VW or any other car because it prob wont make it, just walk with spiked shoes
tandaman538 1 year ago
@tandaman538
Not trying to start anything here :P
But one tire is on full traction the others are on "ICE"
The problem is that No matter what wheel has traction, if its ONLY one, then it will not move the car because VW cant give enough power to the 1wheel, where Subs can.
My rant was if VW wants to make a claim like one wheel can move the car then it should account for normal condition like a slight incline. Ignore Ice, thats for the other 3 wheels its the wheel WITH traction thats the problem

Obviously this is a Subaru Commercial...
