I think, it would be better if the oars are longer in the water. Work with an oval movement rather than the circular I believe you have implemented now.
Still, I like your idea a lot, and would like to see more ancient Roman ships coming out of your hands!

Those ships you saw in the Ben Hur movie lack all scientifically correct construction attributes. If you want, you can contact me at jamaica_sven [at] yahoo [dot] com, and I can give you some correct reconstructional sketches. I do those things since 20 years.
I could almost hear them yelling RAMMING SPEED! on that roman galley.
