@tourmalines Yes. I will leave it raw. I have never oiled my leather washer handles and they have good traction. Natural oiling can have been done during deer dressing though. Thanks.
Another easy way to find your way is to tie surveyors tape to the trees as you go by them. Pick your color red, orange, blue and etc.. Please be safe. You know better than I, as a doctor how dangerous extreme cold can be. On another note, do you do any coastal fishing?
@MrTufan35 I assume I will be able to survive -15C night in the snow shelter if I can make it. Fire making doesn't seem very effective because gathering dry wood seems very exhausting in the snowy night. A small gasoline stove will be very helpful in that situation along with a small tent. But then my rucksack will go pretty heavy before the hunt. So I think I have to leave my current strong greed for antlers and meat. BTW I have no experience on the 1015 steel. Thanks.
@virtuovice Wako SAN. Thanks for your reply. I'm interested in survival memories especially in extreme cold as happened alaska and at the top of mountains. As my personal opinion we should try ourselves how much cold we can resist a kind of training for a unwanted survival day. i tried one time it was -23 C and i saw that even my eyes started to burn as it was very windy day i felt more than it is actually.
@NorwegianKnifeDude The AFSK has a typical clip point knife. And the point is low and the belly is shallow. It can be the reason for its less usefulness. I don't think its blade is too wide. Thanks.
@donnya1000 I always stay there and do my job for a couple of days after the hunt. And after the job I hunt in the morning and drive 6 hours in the afternoon to my home. Thanks.
I think the AFSK knife is nore a survival knife where it is the jack of all trades wihout being ecxeptional at any specialty. I believe the SOG is a better skinning knife but the AFSK is stronger and it will take a harder punishment like using as a prybar if needed. The steel on the AFSK is softer so it will loose the edge faster, but it is stronger than the SOG.
Wako, did you contact bark river or someone about that sheath design? I would go to their facebook page and comment on it. It should really be brought to their attention.
@drkknight614 No. But I have a heavy complaint about it. The former sheath for a wood handled Bravo1 was pretty decent. I have a complaint that they graded down the sheath quality for the same price and didn't change it even for the new S35VN version. The new sheath seems like a real crap. The exposed inside rivet always makes a metal sound every single sheathing and drawing. It does make scratches onto the blade. Anyway I will test it in the field. Thanks.
oh man you are going to love hunting with either one of those rifles. You will be able to take a stag from as close as you can all the way out to around 700 yards once you get used to shooting far. You will love the difference. The only good thing your slug gun is for is close up hunting which you are very good at
actually you may want to think about getting a 308 and a 300 winchester magnum. the 30-06 is only slightly better for long range than the 308. The 300 winmag is far superior to the 30-06 far long range hunting. BUT having said that, the 30-06 is a great all around rifle. All three will be very similar under 300 yards after that the 300 winmag takes over and can go out as far as 1000 yards to take a stag (if you have a very good scope and lots of practice)
Even if he want to he can't çoz he has to trek miles to get back to his car. It might look like a waste but deers are pest in Hokkaido due to overpopulation, which does more damage than good if it gets out of hand. His circumstances are much different from ours. Last year the Japanese government has sent soldiers to cull the deers to control the population but eventually has to really on hunters to help. Personally I would take the whole game but not on my backpack.
@catfishBG I believe you won't do it if you were me. I get 3 deer every single week. And I am not a professional deer hunter but have another job. Why should I take useless meat? The meat is pretty heavy to carry back one mile on snow. Even knowing it surely goes to garbage, do you carry back 25kg meat from a single deer? I can kill 5 or more deer a day but I don't because I cannot consume such a big amount of meat. So I set my primary target for stag. You will do the same as I do.
Agree with previous post in recommending a gps. I use hand held Garmin GPS in the winter and carry a compass as backup. Not only does it help prevent getting lost, it can also provide interesting/useful track data. You would probably enjoy the data it records, such as distance and elevation traversed. Mark where you've taken your deer and you could build some interesting hunting history. Plus it links to google earth, so you can see the actual terrain.
Virtuovice you should get a hand held GPS for hunting. I have one and the security it brings is priceless. Good luck and don't get lost in the forest!
Hunting alone can be very dangerous, perhaps you should investigate the SPOT satellite messenger. It can transmit a distress signal if you get injured and your family can keep track of your location on the company's website for their own peace of mind.
I would definitely get lost - I get love all the time in the city even my GPS. My navigational sense is totally screwed (lol) but I do agree with the risk of hunting without a buddy system.
@RENOGUY777 I was not worried a bit.....he is a very experienced hunter and a doctor to boot but agree with having a GPS or SPOT or the very least a hunting buddy in the event of incapacity.
Virtuovice- I think you should use the handle belly contour of the Fallkniven TK2 as a pattern for reshaping the handle belly on the Helle Futura. The Helle handle looks like it has enough wood there to do it. One think you will probably have to do is either modify or replace the original Helle Futura sheath as the handle finger groove was designed to retain the knife under the sheath strap.
Stitching a retention strap on the belt loop portion going to handle might solve the dangling sheath problem. Might be tricky to stitch on a leather though if you don't have a heavy duty sewing machine. Nice video!
im sure the crows/ravens there have learned a long time ago to recognize and follow hunters
