You have to design and build the pattern regardless of the material, why not make it something easy to work with. Big parts need a sturdy pattern-balsa,pine, plastic etc...I like to draw it-cut it-cast it.
I want to do this a school but my teacher thinks lost foam in sand is cheating so we have to do lost wax in plaster and its hard to do a large piece that way
I'm working w/mach3, the carving is a pattern (says"Smitty's Garage, quality built etc..." I did the artwork in bobcad v22. I made about a dozzen or so (in casting epoxy and low temp metal)of these from a silicon mold I made from the lost foam cast (aluminum)
