There's a few things here...

1) It's a different style.

2) Only *some* JPop sounds that way...other genres don't.

3) Karaoke (and not just the drunken bar kind like in the US) is much bigger and more popular. It's easier for songs to become popular and sell more when ordinary people can sing along to them like in karaoke.
