@supercalifragelistik: To me the choice of tempo was just the right one. By the way, apart from the clear sound and perfect articulation, did you see this violinist fall off the horse?.....
@ArabellaDeVey Yes, the tempo is right. The problem is that nobody that I have ever heard can play it at that speed and make it sound good. Hillary plays it a little bit slower and it is beautiful. Manrico is a wonderful violinist who I have the greatest respect for. Certainly he commands the greatest technique, but obviously he had a hard time hanging on. Respectfully Yours, GB
Hilary Hahn's sounds more "pretty" and elegant , but I just feel the power and drive in this mans interpretation. I definitely prefer this one as a personal preference.
@12341234Ang Frankly, when I think of the musical onomatopoeia for a galloping horse, a horrible mashup tempo similar to the buzzing of a dying bee is not what I have in mind.
This piece isn't so bad, but many renditions of the same are so horribly flawed from bland technicality that they exhibit no real forethought or care on the part of the artist, besides muscle memory and depth perception.
@12341234Ang I guess what I was trying to say is: Compared to what Schubert wrote for the piano, these faster, because they can, versions on the violin, to me personally, leave the essence of Schubert and especially Ernst, who was known as the Paganini with more feeling, who yes, didn't want moderato, but doesn't seem like the prestissimo type either... but who am I to know. All I know is what I've read, studied and perceived. And I am grateful there other tastes&colours, because that is art! : )
24bobbycat's right and you are right in your own opinion as well, but i wouldn't say it is a matter of good/bad taste, just different taste. Yes,Hahn plays it a tad too slow, but has a perfect execution. To me manrico and others play it too fast and scratch it all up(even in a large hall, quite noticeably so for my taste) And like I said, I'm not looking for war, just to say that presto is a broad term and having clocked manrico over 200BPM respectively, says prestissimo to me
Nice performance and great technique, but why play it so fast and completely ruin the piece? It has lost all artistic value and has become an ordinary speed race or "shock & awe" performance. I really hope Ysaÿe has been spared this modern "who can play fastest" symptom many modern performers flagellate art with.
@RaRaLandEQ As far as I know, there is "Presto" written in the score. Not "Andante" or "Moderato". This is probably why.. I think, the dramatic goes lost if you play slower (apart from the fact that the piece becomes much easier), and Ernst knew what he wrote.
@supercalifragelistik so... you would not pace your horse as fast as you could when your child moaning and trembling with fear? that's why the tempo if this piece is very fast!! the fast triplet double stop spiccato signifies horse gallop. so, you won't pace your horse when your child is in danger?
Lo trovo semplicemente fantastico

If you cannot tell the difference between presto and prestissimo,....
pffff.... you poor kids..... this is what happens when you cut off funding
for music programs.... such a shame they can't even count tempo

I think his speed is slightly detrimental to his phrasing, unlike Barati's performance, which doesn't sacrifice clarity despite the tempo.

@RaRaLandEQ To me sounds this interpretation incredible intense and full of dramatic, especially towards the end.
At that level it is anyway just a question of taste.

@mikhaeldito Yes indeed I would ride as fast as I can, but not so fast that I could not stay on my horse.
