Thanks for the video, I'm trying to learn how to play but having difficulty understanding. Is there another website or tutorial that you can recommend for further help in learning to play? Your video was very helpful btw, I just need lots of help cuz I'm kinda dumb lol.
imo, the way to build strategy and become a better chess player is by playing people better than yourself. only the basics are needed, shown in this video, to play anyone, the rest is left to you
One question: With the pawns at the end. What if black passes up the opertunity to capture the white pawn in that move G4 to F3, and decides to move a different piece instead, lets say A6. Can the white pawn that would have been taken, take the black pawn on whites move by moving from F4 to G5?
Thanks, that was informative. Do you have another video on the strategies? Or rules on who can capture which rank b/c when I play against a cpu the opposing king can often capture my pieces but it seems my king can rarely do the same. I'm a total beginner as I'm sure you can tell. Ty!
I have a question: [@ 4:15] you say that the King can only move 1 [one] square at a time; but, then [@ 5:18] you show the King moving 2 [two] places. ??????
Other than that, this is a fantastic video and I [as a BRAND-NEWBIE] understood every bit of it sans the aforementioned question. Thank you for this great vid. I really appreciate it.
I've been fascinated with chess since my grandfather (an FBI agent who understood all sorts of strategy so well, and was great at games) tried to teach me as a young girl. I never learned to play while he was alive, but I figure I should practice just in case I run into him again some day . Your videos are extremely helpful! You're able to explain the basics so clearly...thanks!
Hi, I want to teach my 7-yr. old great grandson how to play chess. I do not know how to play chess, but also want to learn. Is there a particular type of chess game you could recommend? Is this game too ambitious for a 7-yr. old? He's very smart, loves to play scrabble, monopoly and really wants to learn chess. Should I buy a book, explaining the basics? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pat
@patricia67252 No particular type...just chess. I know of those who started playing @ 4 years old. Basics is a good start. I have a video: "Basic Opening Ideas".
i knew *nothing* about chess b4 this vid, im still a lil confused but i understand most of it i think, now if only i could actualy win a chess game then id be happy ,meanwhile im gonna keep looking up youtube videos ^.^ and awesome vid luved it,(but your voice kinda put to sleep) just sayin :) kay thanks 4 postin the vid!
This video would be a bit confusing for true beginners, I think. You should start by demonstrating the basic concept of the game, for example that players take turns moving one piece at a time; you capture a piece by moving onto it; the goal is to capture the opposing king (technically you only checkmate it, blah blah, but that's information for later).
Next time don't title a video that has nothing to do with playing chess, in the case. Your video should have been titled 'learn the basic attack-position of figures'
This should be called "Learn how to move the chess pieces in under ten minutes" instead. This video, while being very helpful to beginners, does not teach what the object of the game is, nor how to go about achieving that objective. It also does not teach all of the rules. This video DOES contain valuable information, but it would be best for a beginner watching this video to know outright that when he is done watching, he still has a bit left to learn before he knows how to play the game.
Thanks, your video really helped. After 3 stalemates in a row I just got my first checkmate playing my Mac on the easiest setting. Deep Blue here I come.
Thank You this has been helpful in more than one way. You see I've always wanted to play chess and i do apply the names of pieces to my more dependable friends, but also i use this method of thought that comes with playing the game in the card game YUGIOH! i don't know if you're familiar with it, but once more thank you.
Alot of my subscribers are now asking me how to play since I posted you up, so I am directing them here............thank you again for your great chess channel on YT, let the games begin. ~ I ♥♟
Nice video, but be sure to include some videos on what checkmate looks like and it if you haven't already. :) Also, be sure to go over draws and stalemates.
This is good, but shouldn't you go over basic checkmates and stalemates? Maybe a total newbie wouldn't know even the goal of the game or what it means. Anyway, I think if it's kept at 10 minutes, that's the perfect time.
It's an important factor in guiding one's play. For example, exchanging one's rook(5pts) for your opponents' bishop(3pts), is generally considered a poor trade.
oh, i didn't even know about the en'peson rule, or that you can't castle out of a check... but i dislike them Oo especially the castle rule - imo it takes away some of the strategic depth of chess.
this is gona so help me on funorb!!!! (the new runescape website that jagex has posted. you can play chess for free on the website using your runescape account, and if you dont believe me, check the archives on runescape (dot) c 0 m

watzup dude i love your video i learned alot, but i have a favor to ask there is a mini competition at my school, and my friend who happens to be the chess club president asked me to compete, but i never played or no anything about untill i watched your video, do u have any suggestions fo me how i train, is there a link maybe u can send that i can download chess for my pc? many thnx i love your video ^_^
Thanks! There are many free sites you could play on. Just do a google search for "free chess play"(or something similar). As far as training...since you are just learning the game now...just play!
i love your videos dude. It's so usefull for players on a lower level like you are and what I do like most is that you're replying to anyone which makes you appear like a very nice person in my eyes :) So, Thanks for helping us or at least me developing my chess-play
thank you, another Video i would like to see is a collection of Beginning move strategies. or a guide to making a solid foundation for a good offense/defense and your Reasons behind those strategies.
Thanks...those are other great points to have added. I guess I had to be selective in what I covered due to youtube's time limit of 10 minutes per video. Appreciate the comment! =)
Very Informative, although I know how to play, I found this very good for any person who doesn't, and would like to play...Basiclaly, just keep up the good work
I've seen what i belive is all your movies on youtube, and i was just wondering if you could make a video about some strategies, like opening up, and stuff like that.
I think your a really really good chess please :-).
I never knew how to play chess and now I do so thanks for this!
You should've also mentioned that the knight can also make an L move by starting with 1 step and then making 2 steps. I've seen another dude's video so that's how I found out.
One more thing, when castling, do you always have to move the king 2 steps to the rook that's closest to you or, in this video, can you also move 2 steps to the left and have the left rook make 3 steps to the right so that it's besides the king?
You're welcome! White and black have the choice of castling either kingside or queenside. In both cases the king moves exactly 2 squares towards the rook and the rook comes on the other side of the king, right next to the king. You'll notice that when one castles kingside, the rook moves 2 squares and queenside castling has the rook moving 3 squares.
Why dont you explain check as a king being in the striking path of an enemy piece. And checkmate as being in the striking path of an enemy piece and cannot move without going into the striking path of another enemy piece? And simply say that pawns capture on squares that are the same color as they occupy.
I like your suggestion of using the phrase striking path. That may very well have been a better way to explaining such...thanks! As for saying that 'pawns capture on squares that are the same color as they occupy', I think my saying of 'capturing one square diagonally' was of a simplistic sort already. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks again!!
Thx
