Wouldn't it be even better than white rooves or plants (which need watering - a huge waste of energy) to put solar panels on the rooves? Then you not only absorb the Sun's energy but also make power available to the building while cutting the nead to burn coal.
@drkstrong Well, yes, that is more of an environmentally friendly way of doing things, as it would reduce the carbon footprint of the buildings, but the thing is that solar panels don't absorb heat and turn it into energy, they absorb light and turn it into energy. Plants absorb both heat and light, making them viable. Plants will also be watered by the rain. So, solar panels are better than nothing, but plants are the best as they reduce both the UHI effect and global warming.
@Zachdudeio2 increase in temperature of surrounding areas of urban areas, yes, but of the atmosphere, no. UHI has a very small effect on the atmosphere's temperature. It is concerned a localised Micro-climate. Remember that the reason why the world is heating up is because of the higher amounts of greenhouse gases, not because of higher amounts of heat production or release. UHI's fade and are not as bad as this program makes them seem, they are a by product of the artificial surfaces of cities.

@dunxi8 Actually some circulate water into the panels and let the sun heat the water so you dont have to use energy to do so.

@drkstrong Oh right, thats true, sorry, I thought we you meant the ones that produce electricity:)

@Zachdudeio2 but this is easily proven wrong. look at maps of areas heating up from nasa
