"with or without you" used the infamous four chords (as did "waiting for the end", sadly). using those chords is a copout, when somebody's too lazy to actually write some music. it deserves no respect.
Well, I think waiting for the end has pretty much a lot of other instrumental things going on except those 4 infamous four chords. And too lazy? I don't think so. Those are 2 songs out of 80.
"waiting for the end" may be the finest-contructed four chords song ever. but that's like saying it's the finest-contructed particle-board death-trap fire-hazard suburban house ever. it may be slapped-together better than the others, but that doesn't mean anything.
linkin park are too talented to use cliches and formulas that were created for people who have no talent.
@neomp5 Songs are more than just music. The concept of a song combines melody, rhythm and lyrics. Stucture and tune. Yeah the chords might be the same but it doesnt define that its the same song. Music hasto be written for the song. not always just a cool guitar solo.
Yeah I wasnt defining this. yes its similiar but if you have the ear you hear the differences. You said U2 used the same infamous chords. Thats what I was pointing out.
u2 used the 4 chords, linkin park used a wider variety of chords. but the arrangement is similar enough to be called a sound-alike, the kind of thing that would be created if you were intentionally making a sound-alike of a song.
yes, they're in different keys, and the u2 song uses the infamous 4 chords, whereas the linkin park one, as far as i can tell, only uses them during the lyrics "the shadow of the day will embrace the world in grey"
but the instrumentation is too similar to be less than deliberate homage
all linkin park did was copy the fuckin song and change it a little and put different lyrics.
if you search both "with or without you and shadow of the day" on google you will see so many articles on how many people believe shadow of the day is a mimic. its not just us who noticed it.
my point is that it's too obvious to be plagiarism, it's clearly a tribute song. they diddn't even make an effort to make it match their own style, aside from the background keys and strings
they are almost identical, except that they are in different keys. i diddn't adjust the pitches to match, if i had it would be a little more clear just how similar they are.
just a coincidence, or homage at worst. I will bet that you guys that criticize Linkin Park for copying this song, tend accuse rappers of "stealing" when you hear a song in which they sampled another artists song.
These same people don't seem to understand that; paying respect to other artists before you. Think about it Blues, Folk, and Jazz songs made ALL the music America
I think the fact people are getting pissed is good. "If your work doesn't piss people off, it isn't good
it clearly was their intention. the original song follows the infamous four-chord formula, so it's been overdone as it is, but the specific style, the bassline especially, are very deliberately designed to emulate U2, without directly copying anything they've done.
THANK YOU!!!!!! for the love of god i noticed this the second i heard shadow of the day!!! I used to love LP, but now they've just gone all green and jumped on the anti-war political bandwagon, which has in my opinion changed from a political view into a fad, and forgotten about the music, they tried to make their music all sensitive now but their songs are just 10x less meaningful then the old ones.
Don't hate on it, it's still an awesome song. Linkin Park and U2 are THE biggest charity bands ever so I love them both.

that doesn't make the song good.

I don't really think that these songs are so identical, they are different in many ways

wow.. when i first heard shadow of the day, the first thing it reminded me of is with or without you by U2.. this is weird stuff..

LP was heavily influences by U2, I kinda think it is a tribute.

Well IF you listen to the Lyrics O.o you can see the Difference in the meaning of the song.

There's a difference between sampling and stealing. This is stealing.
OaklandWhiteElephant 2 years ago
it's homage. the song could be called "ode to U2"
neomp5 2 years ago
It's not because that wasn't their intention. They intended to pass this off as an original creation, which is not.
Thus, theft.
OaklandWhiteElephant 2 years ago

the song. listen to it. it's an "in the style of" type homage.

thats kinda cool

The side-benefit of all of this? When mashed like this, the resulting music sounds as good as either.

i think it was more like a musical homage. but U2 doesn't appeal to me, so neither does LP's version.

fair enough, i've always liked u2 though.
