I think this evolutionary process is something that developes. our estimates are formed from our experiences. I think we see the spectra that we do because it proved to be adequate to our survival. Our need to extend our capability beyond the "visible" spectrum came with our cognitive developement, it would seem. We seem to have adapted by finding ways to extend our sensory range; One could say nature fell short with our vision, or, nature offered the brain as an expansive tool. Interesting.
It might have taken a long time, but I think it was rather engaging and explained well. Great video, now I'm off to read the article you linked.
