  • We are the mods!

  • They played last friday in Brighton MA....AWESOME CONCERT they are very friendly, they rock !!!! I love the Remains

  • The are playing in Brighton MA tonight! Might have to catch this show!

  • this song is the reason,,,,

  • well, no one brought me here..this is just some great 60's era garage rock...well done..thanks for putting this on line....

  • The Creeps brought me here

  • Sid melvin brought me here

  • I really love the sound from the 60s. And The Remains are, from this moment, one of my favorites. It´s a kind of raw, honest and straight rock music from that period.

My hobby is to rediscover all these great rock bands that did´nt breakthrough. Listen, for example, to The Misunderstood, The Puhdys and of course THE ZETTLERS and their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". Simply Irresistible!!! The recordings were made 1965, Unbelievable!!!

  • One of my Facebook friends is actually married to one of the guys.

  • My fave type of band: raw, honest, sounds like you're standing in the garage listening to them! Plus, how did they channel punk b4 it even existed!

    Fab band.

  • god band yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Sounds like Joe Jackson "Is She Really Going Out With Him" stole a lot from these guys

  • They sound like The Rolling Stones! Great band!

  • This song is awesome!

  • I seem to remember that The Remains last song was called "Heart". If so, can someone post it up??

  • I thought this was a hit.

  • Amazing song !

  • tuff 60's

  • 60's gold!!!!

  • Fantastic sound

  • @CLOWNvsMIME- A superb boxed set, i know the one you mean. Have you got the L.A. Nuggets boxed set?

  • I would've never discovered this band if it wasn't for my Nuggets box set. The same could be said for many '60's bands.

  • These cats were really onto something here. A band with this kind of sound didn't exist for another 15 years! This wasn't 60s Punk, this was 60s New Wave!

  • @notfragile33 Agreed - a choppy guitar sound found in bands like Gang Of Four.

  • @mahatmacote The best part is--I understand they're still around, still touring! They didn't let the bad times and lack of respect get them down. Like the MC5, they understood that a new generation discovered them and honours them!

  • WHY WASN'T THIS A HIT? Great question!!! The Remains opened for the Beatles for a few shows on the Fab Four's last tour and most contemporary reviews said the Remains BLEW THEM OFF THE STAGE! One great band...four cats making more glorious noise than any wishy-washy hipster band today could dream of. Four guys, two guitars, ROCKING OUT, not seven guys with 23 pedals between them making Muzak to dull the twenty-something masses!

  • such a life changing song, i wrote so much shit listening to it

  • too controversial to be mass market in the 60's in the US? my guess. don't look back on your christian past as you embrace secularism? not getting political here lol just sayin. loved the song tho

  • Real good and unknown to me. That's the kind of sound I try to reach but with a voice as bad as mine, it's tough! 8-)

Come and listen anyway. Every body's welcome!

  • The ancestors of The Jam, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson

  • Fender jaguar !

  • what's this guitar on the photo at 1:05 to 1:55 ???

  • @scSvenlepolo Teisco TB-64. Its like the fender VI

  • I had this record. Great!!! Yes, shoulda been a hit.

  • Don't Look Back - Barry & The Remains [Boston, Massachusetts] - 1966 - "You'll always WONDER why it wasn't a Top Ten hit. With a Subliminal message." - The Remains-1991. NOTE: A highly regarded Massachusetts punk band, who were originally known as Barry and The Remains. They had quite a reputation in the Boston area in the late sixties, and opened for The Beatles last tour in the Summer of 1966.

  • to me: timeless hit in every way!!

    SUPERB!!

  • Try listening to The Valentines' "Breakaway" after this!

  • Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll.

Salut, vous aimez les sixties ? Ecoutez et podcatez mon émission "le super son des sixties" sur plum fm. Salut et faites gaffe au rock'n roll.

  • actually it's hit if you want ! Gee i like this song !

  • Oh I just found partly why this was not a hit as it was a B-side and the A side was not nearly as good. Called "me right now". So the band or record company execs were just not thinking forward or were psychotic and it was 1966 and Psychotic Reaction by Count Five was a hit so its not like the Flying Nun song was a road-block...

  • I had this on my playlist at work and my co-worker didn't like it. I'm like you're a fuckin dork anyway.

  • if this were released 15-30 years later it would have been a hit.

  • @woadancincolours wasnt supposed to be a hit..its the underground scene..if it was a hit it wouldnt be a nugget..

  • @hoppybhoy71 Joking right?

  • @11xzxzxz its not a joke..these bands were not out for commercial success..it is all about the music..garage punk was an underground scene..

  • @hoppybhoy71 Ha. You are so absolutely right !!! None of these bands wanted national success .. not one. They screamed at their labels not to release records more than locally (exception: sometimes on novice labels regional was accepted). They did everything they could to kept their popularity limited locally and sometimes they got depressed for weeks when they had regional success fearing things could go national.

  • The lyrics are not stupid enough for this to have been a hit.

  • Great slice of Garage...written by Billy Vera

  • This was my fave song on Nuggets, it's one of the greatest songs....

  • @JimmyDFFD was always my favorite too, near perfection for me

  • One of the most perfect singles ever made!

  • Hard to believe Billy Vera wrote this song.

  • This song is better than satisfaction!

  • @thenewtalkingguitar yea but ya cant flat COPY JAGGER and expect a real hit.this vocal screams jagger, that doesnt work!!

  • @dempsey981 Jagger was a Don Covay copy himself so...

  • @loempiavreter wow ive never heard that,i dont even know who don covay is??

  • @dempsey981

Don Covay is a R&B/Black R'n R singer. Quoting "It is no secret that Mick Jagger has sipped at the font of the Don. With the Rolling Stones, Mick cut a version of Don's 'Mercy Mercy,' a year after the version heard here, on the Stones'album 'Out Of Our Heads.' Jagger's style and phrasing throughout his career can be traced to that of Covay's, " Mercy Mercy also had an impact on Keith's lead/rhythm guitar style. The gutiarist in question could be either Don Covay or Jimi Hendrix...

  • @loempiavreter Continued, since Jimi was on that record, but it's not sure which part he plays.

  • @loempiavreter thank you.i lost interest in the stones a looooong time ago, musically i just dont hear it at all.im not surprised jagger emulates another,i guess hinestly i can no longer even listen to him, very mediocre voice to my ear.i do admit they penned a few clever hits tho.

  • @thenewtalkingguitar Well no shit!

  • For those of us who watched the Remains open for the Beatles at Suffolk Downs, they couldn't do anything wrong. All of us who played in garage bands tried to take this song on...they were talented....and I think overwhelmed by a hugh surge in great bands of the day. Yeah...it was great to be from Boston back then.....great band...

  • I got and rock this album on a turntable equipped to download. Yep.

  • DON'T LOOK BACK!!!!

  • One of the greatest LPs of the 60's. My original white label mono record was stolen from me when I was DJ'ing. I can't listen to that re-issued stereo CD cause it's best in mono! Thanks for uploading!

  • A few years ago, Barry boarded at my sister's Boston house, where he left a copy of his book; oh, but how much I would prefer to meet him myself. Did see Billy J. Kramer a few weeks ago, though. yeah

  • @zfloid44 That was some book--completely blew me away. Barry Tashian is a multitalented individual. Loved Bad To Me and also Little Children by Billy J. Kramer.

  • buen garage!

  • For connoisseours of really great rock and roll.

  • To poohen223: Yes, The Remains did open for The Beatles in '66. I was at their Shea Stadium show. They went on before The Ronettes.

  • Comment removed

  • best track on Nuggets

  • @77droog77 indeed, cd1 is good, cd2 bad, havent tried 3& 4...

  • @lovekes if you like psych and garage, try usermamaes AmricanPunkGarage and itsthemoj, great stuff there !

  • great song

  • the frontman looks like mr.bean

  • This is the opening band for the Beatles at shea stadium, no?

  • I've heard these guys before.. the front man looks familiar too. Did he go on to play in another band?

  • One Reason! Accessability!............Hard to find in 1961! The Label3 didn't support the smaller acts so they didn't get the air time.

  • They were big in Boston, their home town. My home town, too. This got lots of air play in Boston. They appeared on the Ed Sulivan show in 1965 and they weren't miked propertly and it sounded terrible... I think that might have killed their chances to go natinoal. Just my theory.

  • These guys are from Boston, MA my home town. I went to see them in concert several times. It's sad they didn't make it. They broke up in 1966 just when I started my band. We broke up too. But we frequented Jacks Drum Shop and Whirlitzers back then and after they broke up there was a post on the bulletin board at both Jacks Drum Shop and Whirlitzers by the Bass player soliciting people for bass lessons!! How sad.

  • They did the entire J. Geils Band repertoire in a 3 minute song... years before there was a J. Geils Band.

  • This should've been a hit, god it sounds so good.

  • Yes Luis, I wrote it then. My publisher pitched it to the Remains' producer. I do make some money from their version and also the Robert Plant version. And yes, I've written a number of successful songs over the years, the biggest of which, "At This Moment," can be found on youtube in many versions, but the hit was under my name.

  • @billyvee Ok I know you did two great songs.

Did you write the music and lyrics? Sorry I just like to know such trivia but it is not trivial to you or me of course.

  • It's a nice song...I'll post facebook comment

  • I wrote this song and was heartbroken that it wasn't a hit at the time. But now it's considered a classic. 22 years later, Robert Plant did a version that wasn't as good as this one.

    Billy Vera

  • @billyvee Really you wrote this around 1966? You gave it to the Remains? Was just the lead singer Jewish. Great song and you should get money from Psychedelic Nuggets records . Did you wrote any songs that made it.. thanks

  • Billy, I just took a look at your profile and I don't believe you wrote this song.

Stop pretending to be somebody else.

  • UAHU.....los flechazos

  • im damned if i can find thier records in the shops

  • Your prayers are answered hipster. The classic 1966 Remains album with this ace tune included has been reissued on CD and vinyl. Check Amazon. It's readily available - buy, enjoy and get grooving!

  • Barry Tashian's Al Caiola Epiphone is the most under-rated rock guitar of all time. These guys were the Weezer of their day! Rock-on!

  • Thank you so much for posting this. This song was on the legendary compilation album Nuggets - Original Artifacts From The First Psychedelic Era, compiled by Rock journalist Lenny Kaye, later guitarist with the Patti Smith Group. That record introduced a whole generation to US 60s Garage Bands (for some critics an early example of Punk Rock).

The Remains were a great band, check them in action doing Diddy Wah Diddy here on YT

  • Great song! Should have been a Top 10 in the USA

  • I love that drum break, killer is an understatement, then the next bit just makes you start automatic dancing!

  • Damn straight. I'm in bed but still air drumming like a bastard to the break.

  • f!$king great!

  • Yeah, i've loved this years.

  • Well, some good news in all of this. The Remains are very much still active and released a new CD in 2007. God bless 'em!

  • This is my favourite song ever...

  • pretty cool shit!

  • true, great song and so frreeshhh..

  • they actually opened for the beatles on their last american tour in 1966

  • Man, these guys and the Zombies. Two bands that should have been huge

  • The Zombies actually had a couple of hits...these guys, nothin'!

  • These guys had nuthin'??? Open up your ears, punk. This band was so great. They were unbelievable. Don't base their talent on top-40 hits.

  • I just don't get it. Why the heck wasn't this a hit?!?

  • There's no justice in this shitty world.

  • It's because only a small percentage of the planet can recognise quality music. I agree this should have been a massive hit.

  • @Umskiddy I couldn't agree with you more.

  • @Umskiddy There are other factors at play, not just obliviousnous.

  • @Khultan Yes, I suppose you're right. It was a silly comment of mine. With adequate p.r. I'm sure this would have been a worldwide smash.

  • @Umskiddy Well, take the case of The Small Faces, their unfortunate associate involving themselves with Don Arden, their first manager, who previously managed The Animals (from whom they ended their service with) and Gene Vincent who once pulled a knife on him for trying to stop his drinking, who exploited the group fully within his control. They never toured America for Mr. Arden would've lost the band to other record companies.

  • @Khultan On the other side, Mr. Arden was quick to see the talent of The Small Faces while others may have been brushing them off, whatever the case, Mr. Arden recognized their obvious talent and swooped on it. The Small Faces were young and naive but excited to get someone who can make things happen. He did get them gigs but, the greedy bastard got them for everything. So, unscrupulous managers, self interest motives play a huge factor.

  • @Khultan Don Arden was shrewd businessman who just happened to be in the music business. As much as I love The Small Faces, I'm sure they must have known enough people 'behind the scenes' who could have looked after their interests.Dodgy music moguls existed well before Don Arden and The Small

Faces only had themselves to blame for having a blinkered approach to things.

  • @Umskiddy No, you're quite wrong there, my friend. You're making an unfounded assumption based on what facts to back up your claim? In more recent times, beastie boys', original managers, Rick Rubin and Russ Simmons started as acquaintancs then friends, upon the surprising success of Licensed To Ill they were withheld their royalty monies on a contractual agreement to produce a sequel. Beastie boys abandoned Def Jam records and migrated to Los Angeles.

  • @Khultan 'a much disputed contractual agreement' the contention held by beastie boys.

  • @kelime No one can really know but it might have been to funky with the talk talk part. I mean it is nuts and they could have cut it down in time not that I think it should be touched. I really can't understand why they don't re-release songs more often that seem like they should be hits. Was a regional hit .. in New England I think. Key Lime pie is just my all time favorite desert

  • @kelime they had many opportunities...they toured with the Beatles in 1966 and got plenty of exposure that year.

  • @kelime of all the garage bands that "should have been huge", these guys cant be beat...supported the Beatles on their last US tour, what a fucking great band....

  • @neilus It's a shame opening for the Beatles didn't get them more exposure :( They're so amazing

  • the remains! tan pegadizos para mi

    como the ramones jaja

    este tema la rompe!

  • OMG! True sounds just as good today as it did back then.

  • holy shit this song sounds good even today... they were much too ahead of their time

  • best break ever written

  • love it

  • No pasa el tiempo para esta canción. Sigue siendo buenísima tras 50 años. Que asi siga y B Tashian se la toque a los nietos

  • saw these guys about a year and a half ago, maybe 2 years for free,,good stuff, still sound the same and these guys can still rock out

  • I can picture myself driving my old Hemi Charger smoking a joint and not a care in the friggin world jamming to this song.

  • hahahah!!!the remains!!!!! fantastique!!!! souvenirs!!! la rochelle, french mods!!!! le meilleur groupe americain from the 60's avec peut etre les buffalo springfields!!!! clément the nowhere man

  • the remains. americans most underrated band

  • gr8 song, needs to be covered by an extant band

  • I think maybe the Hives could pull it off.

  • the sess covered this song.. top notch

  • The Sess did cover this song, perfectly. Love those dudes.

  • I will never understand why this song was never a smash hit. Fantastic!

  • underrated song

  • top tune

  • always been one of my nuggets favorites
