Colonization is a huge part of why not only Africa is fucked up, but also the Mideast. Europeans craved up both places and made nations out of people who never like one another. Iraq is a great example of this in the Mideast, but so is Isreal, or Rwanda. So while you have facts, you have them in isolation, but not in context. (Judge Dredd name?)
