I think the presenter's assessment was very fair and his reaction to the style of the camera is one that many photographers will share. Me included.

Note that my "like" is for the video, not the camera.

The best thing is that you can use your old Pentax lenses with it (though I don't have any Pentax lenses, and I don't think this will bring many people into the system, so...)

But besides that, it's as big as an SLR but just doesn't have a viewfinder, and neither does it have fast phase detection autofocus. It's also damn ugly. Ugliest camera ever, that I know of.

Pentax is really getting desperate. It's well on its way to its deathbed.

@Rationalific I own a Pentax DSLR and I'd love buying one of these. It would be useful to walk lighter and I could use some of my lenses in special situations. It doesn't look odd or ugly to me, it just looks like an old rangefinder (which I like). I just can't bear those grey/silver bodies so popular in consumer grade cameras during the last decade.

The more you talk about this the more this seems like a great camera. If I was a Pentax shooter this would be a great back up body to just chuck in the bottom of your bag and a great camera to just walk around on an off day. Even though the body is big compared to the other MILC but they do have enough pancake lenses to keep the overall size down.

Marc Newson won't be very famous after this. He just made Pentax waste a load of money, why didn't they design something like the Olympus OM-D, they just needed to modernise their K1000.. That would be amazing and a great seller!

@SlaveNCMC Actually, this was shot with a Panasonic AF100, Zeiss 35mm F1.4, Panasonic/Leica 25mm F1.4, and Olympus 12mm F2. We planned to use some Pentax Limited lenses, but forgot the adaptor in the car. Like pros.

Thank you for a world exclusive on the K-01. I agree that it looks totally weird and has that "not built by a photographer look." Not discounting it entirely, but yeah.

However, I think we should address a more serious question about this camera: Since it takes up so much space to allow for regular Pentax lenses, why not just fit a mirror and pentaprism in there? What's the point of losing those when you still have the size?

Pentax were desperate to get this to market. It's like someone's taken a hacksaw to the K5. A DSLR without the SLR. No articulating screen? No LCD viewfinder? It'll be know as the Brick. Someone rummaged in the Pentax parts bin and this is the result, and designed by someone who doesn't design cameras. Ironically it'll likely produce images to rival the Fuji X-Pro1 and has brilliant video specs. Oh Pentax, why couldn't you have just tried a bit harder?!

Actually I suspect the new Pentax XS designated lenses will have a more recessed rear element. Since there is no mirror to block it - what does that mean? Well for one - shorter external barrel making a more compact combo, two - since the lens is now closer to the sensor, hopefully better image quality. That would actually be an interesting and different solution.

One can only hope of course otherwise why would they need a new designation for k-mount lens?

Thanks for posting this Camera Store, great to see a video with people holding it and showing the various k-lenses to get a better sense of the camera compared to just photos. I'm not crazy on the design either but it seems ok. I really wanted something smaller than my K20D but could accommodate my K mount lenses. I'll need to see one in person to get a sense of the size and bulk and am also anxious to see some sample images.

I like it, first i thought like "WTF IS THIS~!?!?!" But it is a gap in the mirrorless camera market. It is only a little thicker than a NEX camera if you attach the lenses. The NEX lenses need to be a bit longer in general due to the small flange distance that makes lens design difficult, this one has the longer flange distance that makes lens design much easier. Also inbody stabilisation is a welcome addition i think. I wish it was available in all aluminium color.

Probably when Pentax refine the camera without Marc Newson's involvement, it'll be better.... an Aussie 'Product Designer' was never going to do as well as seasoned Japanese camera engineers!! Too much attention to making a 'bold composition', and not enough on how the camera is used.

Looks so retro, I love it. Rubber everywhere, grip everywhere. Thick because it needs to support the k-mount. K-5 sensor, you know it's going to have good image quality. No EVF, neither did the Nex3 nor Nex5 when they came out - expect something to come out in the future. Thinner than my k-x, I can slip this in my outwerwear pocket with the 40mm XS and have a great long normal backup to my dslr.

I think its brave and innovative of Pentax to make this camera and I like the functional design. Colour coded custom buttons is a cool idea for both amateurs and enthusiasts, but I don´t think this camera will appeal to pros. The design reminds me of my old Bronica RF645, ugly and praktical. Who cares, unless you´re more into using the camera as a hipster fashion accessory. Good luck Pentax.

@myatchin I think it might. But still, it will have focus peaking. This creates lines on the sharp parts of the image, so you can manual focus very fast and efficiently, this is a big selling point for me for both video and photography as you use the screen with both.
