Dan Maloney was very tough and an excellent fighter before his shoulder was torn to bits. By the time he got to Detroit, his shoulder was badly damaged and he was a shell of his former self when he got to Toronto, as it never repaired 100% - shoulder injuries never do. As a King, he was easily one of the top 3 feared fighters in the league.
I remember reading an article in Hockey magazine back in 1977 or 1978 and they rated Dan the toughest guy and Fotiu number 2 but Fotiu was tougher. the funny thing was a week before the article came out Fotiu slugged it out with Maloney and Fotiu won.
I don't remember Rick Smith fighting at all in his later career with the Bruins and this is probably why -- he got his ass kicked so bad by Maloney. I wish Maloney had tangled with Don Awrey instead, who was a decent fighter and beat John Ferguson once.
Maloney was a very good fighter in the mid '70s. He beat O'Reilly in LA in '75, back when O'Reilly rarely lost, though Terry walloped him a couple of times after that.
You just won't see a sweeter right lead that that one. Nice shot.
If Maloney's shoulder wasn't destroyed by the mid 70s, he would have been talked about a lot more. Tough guy, but the shoulder problems hurt his fight card with the Wings and Leafs.
I remember when Danny was with the Kings, they went into Philly when they were the so-called "broad street bullies", well, they just knew that they had noone as tough as maloney, so they had their three toughest guys, Dupont, I think saleski, and Shultz, jump Danny. First Danny beats up one guy easy, I think it was Dupont. Then he murders saleski...then in the last period, he gets jumped by Shultz. He land ten straight on Shultz, then Shultz lands about 7 on Danny, then Shultz looks stunned...
...because Dan was still standing. Right as it seems that Dan is about to pound Shultz into the ice,the refs pull them apart.I always thought it was chickenshit the way the Flyers ganged up on Dan. But you know what...the Flyers were never again so tough in the NHL after that game. Here's another thing. Dan turned into a pretty credible scorer. While Shultz only had one 20 goal season, Danny had four, including two 27 goal seasons. I'll never forget that game, I was really proud of Danny.
And you what...I actually having a vintage 1970s Kings jersey made up with his name on the back, yeah, MALONEY. The only thing is, I dont remember if he wore 17 or 27. I think it was 27. I have some old Kings yearbooks, I'll have to look. Tell your uncle we still talk about his baddass game here in L.A.!!
how right you are I attended all Kings games back then at "The Fabulous Forum" Dan Maloney was one of the all time best He pummeled many a foe when he was a King including Steve Durbano,Billy Smith and Dave Schultz (who couldnt really fight without backup) Thanks for the memories
Dave and Don Maloney played for Kitchener a bout 1975. Neither one could lick a stamp.Dan played in London 1968-69 and was a true heavyweight,no offense to your dads friend, but dan was a heavyweight.
It's 1969 or 1970. Announcer's name is Don Earle. I believe Fred Cusick's first year was 1970-1971 for TV broadcasts. It doesn't look too much earlier than 1969.
The 1970-1971 season was Maloney's rookie year. It was also the only season that those two could have met while Smith was still wearing a Bruin's uniform, as he got traded the following season , mid-season, while Maloney spent the year in the minors.
