How come you don't mention what the debt would be under the Coalition? If I remember correctly it would have been almost the same. Face facts, Labor are doing a good job, as much as you hate to admit that. Get some decent policy out there, instead of endless scare campaigns on the issues at hand, and maybe people will start respecting the Coalition again.
Erm... just taking at look at the graph at 1:50. Not sure who you think was in government during 1972-1975....
You need to include the nominal receipts growth. e.g Would it be easier for your household run a surplus when your income is $900,000 or $90,000?
It is unfortunate that you don't understand public finance or money very well. You guys have a much better political structure than the ALP. Just you don't have any intelligence. I guess it is just a reflection of Australia.
Is it just me or did he completely forget about the current 'financial crisis'?
0:20 is completely false - the government hasnt spent us down to $220 billion deficits at 29% of GDP - a large sum is due to the collapse of revenues due to the crisis and it is only a prediction, but hockey makes it is current.
Joe uses more buzzwords than his pr team. Spending is necessary. What is the use of a big bank account with nothing to show for it. I paid those taxes while the liberals were in government, only to find that because they were 'saving' it, the interest rates keep going up and up... plus our services were not being funded to my expectations.
And because they were 'saving' it, there was little investment for future infrastructure - jobs, which stimulate any of this 'saving' they were doing.... All this says to me is that the liberal govt at the time didn't have many good investment ideas or strategies. They just had a good ride in a series of world booms- which don't last.
If they were in power right now, and they were to do the things they are talking about in parliament today- or try to save money like joe is talking about, they would not get anywhere. The situation would have absolutely nowhere to go. Then slowly as people start losing their jobs, and can no longer afford to pay their taxes which gave them their our surplus, the savings simply would have dwindled away anyway, and we would have nothing to help at least dig ourselves out of it.
Sure the country now has a 'debt', a word that the liberals believe will relate to many australians however, it is a direct result of planning that didn't occur when the previous government had the surplus to spend on the infrastructure and r&d that is being fastracked now. We could have been miles ahead if they had spent it earlier.
I don't take sides like lots of voters do because that would mean I wasn't making an informed decision, but to those of you that think this is a hate message for the liberal govt, I would have 100% given my vote to the liberals at the last election if they had included a more serious amount of spending in investment areas in their election promises. What the current govt is doing is to seemingly cope with a disaster, and no matter who was in govt, someone would have had to spend the money.
We can climb out of debt, but if we don't spend it as we have it, we will end up like some of those unfortunate 3rd world countries who have no infrastructure yet an incredibly wealthy few leaders, who have no grasp on reality whatsoever.
The microphone is too close, you need to speak up and move about three inches away from it. other than that, brilliant presentation, easy to follow and as well made.
The best economic brains in the world are advising to spend big to avoid economic collapse. Every country is doing it, and if the libs were in they would be doing it too.
• The deficit seems high, but it's the lowest national deficit as a percentage of GDP of any developed country. We've also had deficits for decades, the consistent surplus is a relatively new development. Baby Boomers today aren't crushed under the burdensome financial legacy of their irresponsible parents.
•You can't get out of a recession by saving. Some of the government's decisions have been stupid, but they've taken action, and surely it's mostly sound.
Nice Joe, you've always struck me as the best and most charismatic Liberal Cabinet Member. You make some fantastic points here. I'm not an expert (just 17) but;
•Everything you say about this being the largest and quickest spending since WWII. Surely this is the most extraordinary economic circumstance since the war, even the great depression? Don't the times call for dramatic expenditure like this?

isn't this partly due to labour inheriting part of liberals already falling economy? so wouldn't the situation be similar if liberal were in control?
