@skat0r They turn because if something happens such as a stall due to low speed compressor failure etc etc they will not land right in front of the ship and get run over. The ship is usually pointing into the wind if possible.

You can't just fly where you want. )) That is a common mistake - most people, looking at the sky, thinking of pilots as they're free birds. It is not so at all. ))

@honzijk Its called a 'Clearing Turn' it is used in Case I and II Departures in order to seperate the aircraft just launched from other simultaneously launched aircraft coming off other catapults. This way they avoid collision or cross over of each other's flight paths. The clearing turns are to starboard for the main catapults and to port for the waist catapults. In Case III situations (Cloud celling below 1000 feet or visibility less than 5 Nautical Miles or at anytime between half an hour
