Noir, I think your reading of the entire film is a little bit angry, perhaps? I felt that the hunger in this film referred to both "blood-lust" as it were, and to Miriam's insatiable need for companionship, love. A very lonely 10,000 year + vampire. I was moved by her sorrow and compassion, not a cold monster.
This is film, both illusory and terribly canted, at best. Despite that, it is a gorgeous piece of work.
Your friend would do well to listen to your advice, I admire your honesty
In the 80s and some would say even now, there is such a deficit of any representations of lesbians in literature and film, that ANY character is cherished, just for the fact she is suggested to be a lesbian character. When we are starved, we can and do eat anything.
Many 'lesbian' characters are constructs of male fantasy, and their idea of lesbian love making is quite fantastic. Still we will wade though drossand drivel to savour the most minute clue of sapphic love. *sigh*
Miriam for me is quite 'genderless'. Deneuve is so successful in her portrayal of Miriam, that for a lesbian, she ceases to be female, and the homoerotic content relates mainly to Sarandon's character's own development.
I also find it curious that women are often attracted to partners with a very dark side, regardless of gender.
I'm not across the Blaylock trilogy, but such a situation does occur, especially in women.
They are forced to wear the label of 'bisexual', when they see themselves as just 'sexual'.
Their attraction is initially emotional, and gender does not matter. It can then become expressed sexually, but this is somewhat secondary to the emotional element which propels and sustains the relationship.
The ending of this was kind of confusing. How do Deneuve's stored 'husbands' get out of their coffins? Even thoug their bodies continue to age, the 'curse' has kept them alive. But then when Deneuve 'dies', they turn to dust. Except in that final shot, we see a coffin that we're supposed to think is Deneuve's. ???
Yeah...the book is not like the movie. In the movie Miriam lives. The book and the sequal were written by Whitley Strieber, the guy who claimed to be abducted by aliens and who also wrote 'Communion' and 'Wolfen'.
In the movie, Miriam isn't actually dead in the end..she's just sort of a zombie (getting older and older but not actually dying), the way David Bowie and the previous husbands wound up, right?
Well, I would advise reading the book. I dont' want to give away too much info. 'The Hunger' by Whitley Strieber. I will tell you that there are no 'ankh' necklaces in the book, that Miriam has a hollow tongue that she shoots out and stabs her victims, then sucks them dry. The humans turned into vampires have to use cutting objects like scalpals and they only live for a few hundred years befor 'dying', i.e. aging incredibly fast but never becoming truly dead.
Warning, Spoiler Alert!!! * * * * * * * * * just wait to you read the book. She takes of her wig, pops of her ears, removes her contact lenses, takes out her fake teeth, and voila...she looks just like an alien. Ooops...I gave it away. Yup, the vampires who are aliens who created man as 'cattle'. Overtime the cattle overtook the vampires and spread all over the world. The vamps/aliens are slowly dying out. Did I spoil it for you?
HAHA! Meyer claimed to have a dream and that's how she created the Twilight saga...yeah of David Bowie in the Hunger lmao!

A Beautiful film a perfect film from start to finish.

Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon have always been favorites of mine, but these two together make the perfect pair.
This movie is very erotic, but in the best of ways.

I remember renting this VHS in the 80's. I watched this scene over and over. They were the hottest lesbian vampires I'd ever seen. ;)

Actually, I was reminded of Blade Runner during the "seduction" scene, with the soundtrack and the look of the room!

The movie clearly wasn't tryng to say she was an alien. And there will never be a sequel to find out for sure.

It's a magnificent movie about vampires (or is that a metaphor? You decide.) It's the ultimate lesbian date movie and a true cult classic.

I gotta agree with brushstrokesrock. Being bitten by Catherine Deneuve would not be so bad.

If a vampire is as beautiful as Deneuve, I wouldn't mind being bitten by her. Hah! :-D

A most brilliant & atmospheric film of the 80s totally underrated
On of my most favored films ever! Tony Scott is a visionary!

Too bad for Sarandon, any other actress look average beside C. Deneuve.
I am french and i assure you, even in french Catherine's demeanor and voice are too hot, icy, classy and sexy.

Ah.

ragemanchoo82 3 years ago
That doesn't happen in the book. Sarah dies, kills herself, and Miriam lives to go on to sire more vampiric lovers.
BoyintheMachine 3 years ago
So I guess if the vampire kills his/herself, they don't actually stay alive, the way they do when somebody else tries to kill them, ala the movie?

The hollow tongue thing wouldn't have translated to film very well -- sounds rather corny.
