ok anyone saying japan is small so it is easier to do public transit, look up the idea of boswash its the urban area of the US from Washington DC up to Boston. Its about 2% of the US's land mass, yet it has about 25% of the US population living in it. It has a HIGHER population density than japan has. their is no reason not to have better public transit in this whole region, and not just the major citys
Anyone that says their should be NO private cars in Manhattan don't live in a NYC suburb. If you live within walking distance of a train line its fine, otherwise it usually takes less time to just drive into Manhattan than to try and drive to a train line, park your car, then take a train. Also if you have 2 or more people in a car it's cheaper to take a private car than train. once they improve the connection of the transit system, and lower its cost fine, but until then cars are still needed.
Why drive 30 minutes to the train station, pay $10 to park, then pay $22 for a round trip 45 minute train ride into Manhattan, to then have to take a 15 minute subway ride to where I'm going? I can just drive right from my house to where i want to go in Manhattan in about 45 minutes. Scooters work fine if you live in Manhattan, but they don't work very well if you need to come in from OUTSIDE the city.
They want less traffic they need more parking.30% of all traffic in Manhattan is trying to parking. SO many people just block travel lanes because their is nowhere else to pull over. It's common to have curb side parking, a second lane of cars standing, and a 3rd lane blocked by a bus. When lots charge $20 an HOUR for parking, people look for street parking causing traffic. Get rid of street parking, offer enough cheap parking lots and make the curbe just for drop off/pick up of people/packages.
in concept closing Broadway isn't bad, the street doesn't follow the grid and messes up light cycles anywhere broadway intersects. This 1/2 baked plan is ridiculous though. The cheap lawn chairs and traffic cones are flat out ugly. The fact bikes still cris cross pedestrians does not help. Anyone walking in NYC knows bikes are FAR worse than cars. Cars actually try not to hit pedestrians, bikes seem to aim right at them.
I am amazed how aggressive people react. This is one of the best things that have happened to NYC since the development of Central Park.
That is not New York sounds like a conservative quote from the middle 60ties Europe. The US is so fare behind in terms of infrastructure and public space.
NYC is one of the few places in the US where people dares to think innovative, and not are struck by fear of change.
What is foolish is driving a car anywhere in Manhattan. The ONLY cars that belong in Manhattan are taxi's, airport shuttles and cars for business purposes ONLY.
NYC has the best public transporation system in America. Keep your big SUV's out of NYC and use the subway, or use a bicycle.
If anybody thinks this is bad for the business, you probably don't have a good sense of business. Here's why.
Hokosha tengoku(Hokoten) offers a good opportunity for the street performer and star wannabe alike for the exposure. Some people go there just to watch them perform. You can find many youtube videos(search by : Akihabara, Harajuku). Where people gather, there's a good business and local stores, restaurants depend on it.
lol wow living in cities must BLOW if your idea of an exciting day is sitting on a fucking huge slab of concrete and staring at the flashing billboards.
I actually like this idea. I've been to New York in that area in particular and they really do need the space b/c the traffic is cluttering everything...
such stupidity from NY really surprised me... what can i say, maybe the politicos just wanted show how green they r by even doing bad things "with good intension".
How does this lower pollution? If anything, it increases pollution because cars and trucks will be forced to take a longer route to get around these areas.
Japan has been doing at some of the busiest intersections once a week for decades with great success.
You'll eventually get used to it because you'll know when it happens in advance. As a result, Japan has one of the highest use of bicycle use in the inner city in the world.
Americans should change the way they think of automobile as a gas powered wheelchair.
Japan is also a small nation with a lot of money. They've put a lot of effort into a very good public transportation system and it is much more difficult to have a car in Japan than it is in the US.
Cars could barely move through Times Square at busy times anyway. Probably for the best but I'm not a New Yorker so I don't really have any stake in the decision.

Right! we don't need police cars and ambulances. Screw the police and who cares about dying people.
We don't need garbage trucks either - people can just throw their trash into the subway - it's already dirty anyway.

I'm talking about private vehicles.
