Anyway, yes, injury or death is a risk the drivers and spectators are fully aware of, but if there was some way to prevent something like this without adversely affecting the sport itself...would you not be in favor of such an action? Most tracks have tires or a cushion before the walls to prevent almost exactly what just happened and also to slow the impact.

The guard rail (not crash barrier), did prevent the car from leaving the roadway, and that is not something I would eliminate at all. However, I also believe safety has no limits and technological advances can assist in the development of better barriers with less damage to the vehicles and drivers.  Your argument: "We always do it this way so why change it?"

I saw some video from the stage. Can't believe they let people to race there. It's full of really nasty rails and sharp cornered cement blocks. Just super dangerous to crash at any point of the stage. I hope he makes a full recovery. I want to see him get a real chance for F1 title. Best drivers in the best cars.

It's an ordinary special stage for a Rally event here in Italy. It's not "super dangerous" like u are writing above... You race in a rally, you know the risk, that's all. I've met Kubica this summer and he is a really good person and a great talent, I wish him the best and a quick come back !!!

@asax724 It's not an ordinary SS. Difficultywise it didn't look so bad, but still it's inevitable for someone to slip out of the road sooner or later for reason or another. Risk of getting injured in that case should be minimized. This SS had a shitload of sharp starting banisters and cement blocks. I'd rather drive a WRC car 120 km/h in the middle of a 0,5 m thick pine tree, than go out of the road 100 km/h in a random point of this SS.

Lets just say I've been a passenger when friend of mine drove north Norways fjords in a winter time doing some of the curves 170 km/h sideways!, and a thought of a possible crash still didn't feel as bad than most of the places on that stage Kubica crashed on. Done 140 km/h sideways on an icy road in a much crappier car myself. Damn, the car I drove didn't go faster than 160 km/h even on straight.

@fitobcnfito Tell that to Markko Märtin, Jimmy Girvan, or the Finnish kid that died last may. F1 nowadays has not only very safe cars, but they also have huge safety zones on most tracks. And even on really nasty ones like Monaco they aren't allowed to have that kind of banisters or cement blocks outside of track. I know the impact energy in F1 is MUCH higher due to high speeds, but so are the safety precautions.
