After enduring voyager, I thought Enterprise was pretty good.
Sure season 1 and 2 had only a handful of good eps (just like seasons 1 and 2 of TNG + DS-9). Season 3 got better (not nearly as good as TNG season 3).
But with season 4 they finally managed to capture the spirit of what the series should've been about. So without Braga & Berman, it would've been great. I have no doubt that if there had been a season 5 & 6 under Coto, then the series would've been appreciated a lot better
The Star Trek franchise, at least as conceived by Rick Berman, basically ran out of gas with ENT. Everything was on auto-pilot from "Broken Bow" onwards. Even the darker elements introduced in Seasons 3-4 were basically a revamped, less satisfying version of DS9. You have a similar format to DS9 with the Xindi arc. Reed replaces Bashir as the idealist who has to deal with Section 31. You have an uneasy alliance formed to fight a common enemy. And the mirror universe returns.
Just watched "Broken Bow" for the first time in ten years; I like watching the episodes before the reviews, now that I've got them all in one place. It was bad, but not QUITE as bad as I remember; they all got to be slightly less asshole-ish and more cooperative as it went on. They're still worlds away from Seasons 3 and 4, which I rewatched last year when it was easy to find full episodes on YT. I don't think I could stand to watch this show all the way through; so much shit to trudge through.
"If they blast it until it goes offline - guess what? It's broken!"
Spoken like someone who has never armour tanked in EVE!
Seriously though, the ceramic hull idea would have been cool... and I'm sure they said the original intention for the interior of the ship was something more akin to a submarine and hey, that would make more sense too! This is something like 200 years before the Galaxy Class Shopping Mall.
I'm not sure if it was an intentional attempt at irony when choosing her name, but in Japanese Hoshi actually means star, or any form of stellar object depending on context. Make of that what you will.
been a long time since an enterprise review, i used to really enjoy them. still would like to hear your opinion on season 4. season 3 is watchable too, though it certainly dragged when watching it week by week.
As much as i dislike Enterprise (it's my second to last least favourite Trek show), i have to admit that Broken bow, while idiotic at times, at least did one thing right: it really did capture the feel of "this is new for us as humanity" and showed some humanity in it's screw-ups without de-evolving into "Climb a mountain"-territory. I wish Enterprise would have gotten a fifth season. fourth one was the first where i really started to give a shit about ENT and when it ended, i was a bit sad.
@RotalHenricsson Though to this day i'm not able to forgive them their heist on the vessel they stole the Warpcoil from. Not because i don't see why it was necessary in Archer's view, but because "Home" actually flat-out stated that they didn't even ATTEMPT to send a Warp 5-vessel out to look for them. In my mind this was more un-trek than slicing a man's face off to attract a human-klingon hybrid. This is just one occasion when ENT missed a great setup for an episode.
@RotalHenricsson I never got the 'this is new' feeling from Enterprise. Right from the get go, it felt like any other Trek, except with hull plating instead of shields - and with idiots instead of likable characters.
Such a missed chance and, so far at least, it's killed trek on the small screen.
@Azezel i'm talking more about the setting than the scriptwriting and i was talking primarely about Broken Bow. Enterprise had a few interesting ideas that where horribly executed, like changing Vulcans into dickheads. Also, as much as i hate to defend poor writing, keep in mind that this is not the time of TNG, set on a ship that only accepts the top guys from an allready elite academy. Not every time they fail it's their fault (Tucker and the occasional genocide not taken into account).
ENT wasn't the worst sci-fi series ever and it lasted a still hefty four years, but its characters were copies of VOY's characters.

I totally agree with you on the enterprise theme. Hell, I would have used Kyptonite for seasons 3 and 4 because it an actual exiting song.
