I live in Cumberland Maryland and I like our Mayor. Wait till Obama raises taxes so high we won't be the Housing Champs. Besides some City people can call Cumberland in the sticks but don't say we are hicks and racists. Those city people should just turn off their lights if they think we are racists and hicks. Because outside Cumberland in the County that is where their energy comes from like Coal. Don't forget DC and Baltimore is power by Coal from Western Maryland, Parts of West Virginia.
Well its true Coal does power the nation's capital (DC). Coal does power Maryland along with hydrogen. Western Maryland isn't ashamed that coal powers the State of Maryland and DC. Western Maryland also favors alternative energy. Untill that Alternative Energy comes to Maryland and DC coal will be around for many more decades. Wind energy is one of many alternatives that is coming in the next few decades. Our Region of Maryland will like to produce Natural Gas.
I grew up in Cumberland. Beautiful Area.. My mother the "Track Lady" just passed away in Oct.2008. I know she is being missed by many. I live in the Mid-west now,but Cumberland, will always be Home. Still have great friends there. "I Left My Heart In Cumberland".
micromac98 is right, there are a lot of houses that sit on the market for years. The house across the street from us has been for sale for 3 years and we live in a fairly nice area. Yes it is a very nice place to live but there are no jobs to speak of here, no jobs with future's. The money that comes in comes from the wealthy with 2 or more homes, who doesn't want to live in "the city". Yes; Cumberland has not had it as bad as other towns; but neither are we economically "sitting pretty".
It is a wonderful place to live however there are NO jobs to sustain the people of this county. "City slickers" are coming into the area and buying up the houses at what they consider "dirt cheap"prices. So as was said before, great deals for the wealthy but lousy for the locals. But as it was clarified before, this is what those idiots want in the WH! beat down the poor and build the rich.
This Is a nice place to live. I grew up in Texas and have lived in the midwest , in New Jersey, and here for the last 20+ years. I love the climate, the slower lifestyle, the proximity to the big cities, etc. The people are friendly and I wouldn't live anywhere else. We also have the C&O canal and this is a connection for the Allegany Highlands trail and the C&O towpath. There is something here for everyone!!!
This story is misleading. Nobody is buying houses...they sit on the market forever. And what you get for the money isn't always a steal. Yeah you might find a house for $150k...but it hasn't been updated since 1957. And after you remodel and update you end up with another $50 grand in it.
There are some deals out there for people with money moving into the area. But for locals? The market is crap.
Cumberland (really western Maryland in general) is a great place to live. Close enough to a lot of stuff but far enough away that most of the big city/suburban problems are absent. Love it here!
i miss being home! i live in a big city in the midwest, while im working my way through college. i never thought i would ever say i miss being home. hopefully one day i will be able to return to cumberland, with a good job to go back to! try topping iron's moutain, and looking at c-land @ sunset. cannot beat that view!
The reason house sales have gone up is because the people that have money are buying up the houses that other people are losing. The ones that are foreclosing!!! It has NOTHING to do with what Obama has done. He is breaking all of us by taxing us to death!! Taxing companies is not the answer either. They just lay us off because they cannot afford to keep us any longer. Now he wants to take over our healthcare and control that too. Obama is a NUT & our whitehouse is filled with a bunch of NUTS !!
Amen. Does Obama know where his lights come from in the Whitehouse. Maybe Obama should try Western Maryland Coal. If Obama is seriously about getting off from Coal then he should take the Whitehouse off the grid. Is he aware DC gets powered by coal.
I never appreciated Cumberland until I was in my 40's - and then I realized what a truly beautiful, peaceful and friendly community it is. ~ Also, unlike many other towns, no one is an outsider here.

If Obama gets his way Cumberland will suddenly be abanded because of those people that work on the railroad, Coal Plants, Coal Mines, and New Page.

Our area is also loaded with realestate bargains. I bought a Brick Double and a garage on bedford Street 67 years ago for $12000.00.
But the beauty of the area is priceless.

Wow--I knew we were doing well, relative to the curve, but not THIS well. Thanks, urban sprawl!
