"The Dedication Song" just missed the national Top 40 following it's debut in February 1966. Over it's six week chart run it peaked at #41 -- inxplicably -- because it is such a GREAT record. It was also Freddy's last to reach Billboard's Hot 100 national singles chart until 1981, when he came back with "Let's Put The Fun Back in Rock 'n' Roll." As it deals with radio dedications, it closes out the classic Reader's Digest CD box set "Dedicated To The One I Love."
I picked him up in my new 1966 mustang and brought him from Wausau Wi to Marshfield WI to play at the Airway Bary with a band called Doc and The Interns. He put on a super show and then came down and sat with us and talked he is really a nice guy.
He still tours relentlessly. I've probably seen him 8 or 9 times here in Michigan and he's ALWAYS worth the price of admission. He also has been out for autographs either before or after the show (probably depending on his flight schedule). If you haven't seen him, find him and go. You won't regret it.
"The Dedication Song" was actually a hit in the spring of 1966, a few months after "Action," and the two of them together were not only among Freddy's greatest hits but also his last after 20 before these since 1959. Freddy would not chart again until 1981 when he put out "Let's Put The Fun Back In Rock 'n' Roll." Incredibly, THIS classic rocker missed the national Top 40, cresting at #41. "The Dedication Song" should have charted far higher, as it remains a soul-lifting delight even today.
This was his last hit form what I've been told. I wasn't born til this song came out, and I didn't come out til late Dec! BUT I love this stuff! I wish I was bornearlier so I could have seen these performers live in their prime!
@56Mercgal i did get to see some performers while they were in their prime: Chuck Berry, the Four Seasons, Lloyd Price, Laverne Baker ; also the group Chicago. about six years back, saw Dion, Chubby Checkers- He was great and stole the show.
Seriously, I've been looking for this song FOR YEARS and have been unable to find it. You added it on my birthday... HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME! Thanks SO MUCH for this...
