Althought Nobody will admit it! Prisoner Cell Block H Flaunted Australia's former WHITE ONLY immigration Policy! Unlike other Western Nations The Show promoted Australia's All White Prisoner population! The show was supposted to Promote Tourism to Australia. Most people under 30 would not Understand it. But thats what the show was about!
Oh YES she did say the N word! I remember seeing this before and commenting on it, I said SHAME on you Lizzie! But All old people say the N word here. They were brought up in a very racist time. Back then whites and blacks didn't mix with each other. And if they were married? I feel sorry for the way they were talked about then. But as I said all old people were racist back then.I guess they didn't know any better.
It goes to show the subtle cultural differences between Australia and other English-speaking countries. The word 'coon' in Australia is a type of cheese and people in Australia will ask for a 'white coffee' rather than a coffee with cream or a coffee with milk. There is nothing racist about it but folks from other countries could think it is being rude.
A woodpile is a pile of firewood. If any of the wood was already burned it would be black and thus not have much calorific value in a new fire. Therefore, it was considered already spent. How it got there would be from slaves gathering firewood. It wasn't difficult to disguise used wood amongst the pile thus making it easier to stack from nearby dead fires. The nigger refers to firstly the spent firewood as it is black but secondly, the slave (of black origin) that put it there.
She said "nicker" When they say "nick" they're referring to stealing something. A "nicker" is someone that nicks (steals) something. In other words, a "nicker" is a theif.
Ok, that makes sense. I couldn't imagine them saying anything like that to refer to black people. In fact, I never remember seeing black people on there.
Well as a person who is of black descent I just fell about laughing! Lizzie reminds me very much of my Grandmother (who is from Barbados) she still uses the word to this day! She is 94 mind! I don't find it offensive if I know its not used in an offensive context. You have to remember that this is 30 years ago! Much love to my fellow blockies. x
thirty years ago and from a woman in her 70s. today you would never hear any of that on tv. i know what you mean and nice to see you laughed. i know, i am personally against it...but when i was really little and didn't know meanings of words we used it in "eeny meenie miney moe catch a ..." now, if i ever heard that i would slap a face of a kid.
@bcrocker33 yeah now it's only okay when black people are using it on tv and in songs, which I find ridiculous. If the word is offensive from one race of people, then it's offensive from anyone, so it shouldn't be used at all. After all, to give one race a pass in using an offensive word over all other races is just another form of racism :)
@goofee07 My grandmother was from New Zealand, and used that expression, but never meant it as an insult, she had a cook who was from Barbados, and she used that expression also, and never took offense when my grandmother said it...
Yeah, like Valerie says its just an old saying thats fell out of favor because of politcal correctness. Its used a few times in cell block. I remeber hearing Ettie say it too.
from wikipedia: A nigger in the woodpile (or fence) is an English figure of speech formerly commonly used in the United States and elsewhere. It means "some fact of considerable importance that is not disclosed - something suspicious or wrong"... developed in the period of 1840-50 when the Underground Railroad was flourishing...

She said NIgger for sure, but I think the point is Lizzie is so old she would think nothing of saying that, but nowadays that's offensive.
