@asaklitt It's actually not a mandolin or a bouzouki. It's a cittern. They're all from the same family and have similar turnings but the cittern is the earliest form. Bouzouki is Greek like where the cittern would have been found in Britain and ireland
@colincoby yes heres one for you , kim mitchell finished his show when eddie van halen was about to go on ,,, they were back stage and eddie was walking around freaking out saying thats it im not going on ect ect ,,, convining most he was nt going to play ,, but as soon as van halen was annouced there he was and played great ,,, its all energy
Eddie Van Halen runs around backstage right before curtain claiming that he can't go on because he's a fraud. XTC stopped playing out because of Partridge's stage fright. When you consider those who suffer it you might be right when you say that it likely adds something to the performance.
I just never, ever would have imagined it with Kirstie, she was so personable and right there with the audience when she performed.
@lesterclaypool1 Good observation. I think that it's far more common than performers admit and fans realize. I imagine that stage fright/insecurity is one of the overlooked reasons why substance abuse is so often linked with popular musicians and other performing artists. Taking a few swigs of booze before hitting the stage is an almost certain remedy for performance anxiety.
I've never been much of a drinker but I know that partaking in a wee bit of a quasi-legal smokeable substance has never contributed to my stage fright :).
Interesting to note: Alice Cooper has said that he could drink anywhere and at any time except for onstage. He said that the amount of adrenaline pumping through his veins would have made him puke the booze up.
It's not a mandolin. It's an Irish bouzouki. Simular to a normal Greek bouzouki, but tuned as a mandolin (EADG) and a flat back. Actually moore simular to a Mandola.
Yeah, the BBC tallking head hasn't a clue. It *is* an Irish bouzouki, usually tuned GDAD but Terry may tune his GDAE.

I'm surprised to hear about Kirsty's stage fright. I'd always imagined her as a luvvie, of sorts.

@lesterclaypool1 So many of the great ones had stage fright. There are stories of Joan Baez having to leave stage and throw up in the middle of a set.
Perhaps it's that nervousness and intensity that helps bring out the strength and beauty of the performance.
