HearnsFanBritish, thanks for this & other Hit Man vids. He's my favorite. Here's a request I have: The one fight of Tommy's that I have never been able to find is his tough and controversial bout with James Kinchen. If there's any way you could find and post it, it would be very appreciated!
I think everything is put on the Ray Leonard factor. Hearns fought so many contenders and had been through so much since 1981 that in 1989 when Ray would swarm Tommy, Tommy looked calm and cool and easily handled what he could not in 1981. That is experience. Tommy in 1989 had more experience than Ray no matter what anyone says and it showed. Ray still did well but Tommy put more into boxing and put more of his heart and soul in boxing. Ray quit whenever he got a little bored. Tommy never quit.
bscott. keep in mind that Ray also had fought only 4 times since the first Hearns fight in 1981 when he fought Hearns in 1989. yet at the same time Hearns had fought 16 times in that same 1981-1989 period and had been stopped twice. So I think the wear and tear factor was in Leonard's favor since Hearns had to be more worn out. Hearns in his career had more wear and tear than Ray and had almost 30 more fights. That is why Tommy did so much better in 1989 also.
Lets keep in mind in the Leonard-Hearns rematch Leonard was not as active as he was before there 1st fight. He was retired from 1982 to 1987 and didnt have close to the same speed. even in the Hagler fight i thought Ray was very slow compared to 1981.
You got it wrong about Hearns/Leonard..Hearns zealously (over)trained for the fight and came in 4 pounds under- He was beating up Leonard for the first half of the fight (Leonard had to retire due to an eye injury from this fight, 1 fight after) then Hearns just ran out of steam. I believe he would have won had he come in on the button
He was 145, 2 under. He didn't know how to hold, and I think he was destined to lose that fight. The Hagler fight was the one I think he really could have won. If he had only fought him like he did Shuler a year later.
The man had tremendous power and skills. He also had the heart of a lion which I think gets overlooked because, certainly around middleweight, he was extremely chinny.
People like Hagler, Duran and Leonard were gutsy guys but also had good jaws, and it would be interesting seeing how they'd cope having Tommy's chin at middle/super-middle.
He lost the Leonard fight clearly and emphatically. Why you trying to explain that he couldn't have won when the history books and result have been saying it for 25 years?

Leonard beat Hearns in the first fight. Had it been a 12-round fight, Hearns would have one. But it wasn't, so Leonard gets props. Hearns beat Leonard - convincingly - in their fight #2 - two knockdowns - although it was draw. Despite Leonard's media pull, every serious viewer admitted a Hearns win (as did Leonard, when I sat next to him on a flight to BWI). So, who is better? A push. Leonard was tbetter at lighter weights; Hearns better at heavier weights.
When Hearns hit 'em flush, they never moved. When he was on the attack he was pure poetry in motion. If he'd had a stronger jaw, he'd have been unbeatable. C'est la vie!
Hearns could always cut the circuits off when he landed his A1 right hand. I remember that fight. What a great one. Roldan gave Hagler Holy Hell before being being worn down. I wish someone would post Roldan's KO over Frank "The Animal" Fletcher to see just how tough he was as well. No one starched Roldan like Hearns, not Hagler, not Nunn. Thanks for posting this.
hearns was one punch from getting knocked out- but he came back- great heart tommie hearns had.

Sure Tommy had no fear of trading against a puncher, that's why he took too many risks.

My boxing coach was raving about hearns fights today. Telling us how to use the jab.

Thomas Hearns is my favorite fighter. He had superior boxing skills, power and a tremendous heart.

When Roldan hurt Hearns that was the first time I saw a boxer get hurt and start dancin like Elvis.

Hearns an absolute all time great, but he still wouldn't have beaten leonard in the 1st fight whether he clung on or not.
(i)He was totally dehydrated
(ii)Leonard (at Welter) was way too strong for him and knew how to hurt him, despite all of Hearns tools and Leonards shut eye.

Roldan was beating hagler until he got a thumb to the eye. That blinded roldan and took away his agressiveness..

I don't know why HBO or someone doesn't make a first-rate documentary about the Kronk gym.

Have Kronk closed or moved?

No. Emanual Steward has moved on though I think.

Now we have Cro Cop & Emelianenko, but when I was a kid it was Hearns & leonard - spectacular, awsome fighters!

What a right hand. How'd Tommy ever lose a fight?
HeathInClearLake 5 years ago
Probably because some "genius" in his training room decided it was best to rub his legs down before a match (Hagler, anyone?), lol...

What a fight and a tremendous last round! If Tommy had held on when in trouble like he did in this fight he would've beaten Leonard the first time!

Absolutely. It still ticks me off to this day that Leonard won.

It helped that roldan was wild and inaccurate not the accomplished boxer that leonard and hagler were.
